Did I hear you correctly?

My friend and I were eating at McDonalds one day and I ordered a bacon cheese burger. When it came it did not have bacon. So I took it back and explained the problem. The clerk asked "Oh, did you want bacon on your bacon cheese burger?"

My friend asked for packets of creamer when she got a cup of coffee and a different clerk said "Did you want it for your coffee?" She was very quick witted and replied "No for my fries, I put ketchup in my coffee." The clerk replied "One or two?"

Are we not making ourselves clear or has this happened to anyone else?

ChaiQuilter 02-17-2012 06:22 PM

It's time for them to put on their "listening ears"!

greensleeves 02-17-2012 06:49 PM

While traveling I stopped for coffee. I asked for a coffee, black. The counter person asked if I wanted it with cream and sugar. I was so stunned, I just smiled and said "No" shaking my head.

Treasureit 02-17-2012 06:54 PM

I have noticed that I can't give all the information at fast food places...especially a drive through. If I say I want a #2 with fries and coke...they say...what kind of drink would you like with that? The worst is the kids meals they HAVE to ask their questions and they punch in my answer one at a time....they are not programed for more than one thing at a time. It is not you!!!

MissM 02-17-2012 07:07 PM

What I hate, particularly in the drive through is when they interrupt you while you are giving your order, and then cut you off with the first meal, like you are the only person in the car. We have left a McDonald's drive through for that reason...and gone to Burger King because the person taking the order couldn't stop talking long enough to hear our order.

kathdavis 02-17-2012 07:44 PM

People aren't listening. They seem to be programmed to ask certain questions and that is what they do. My 7th graders really struggle with listening. They ask the exact question that I just answered. They turn in papers in the wrong place, when I just told them where, etc. I think I can go on and on.

I went to the drive through bank today and asked for my $200 in cash to be in 10's and 20's. I got $100 back in 50's and the other $100 in 20's. I sent back the 50's and ask for them in 10's. She wasn't happy and asked me twice if I wanted the whole $100 in 10's. I thought I was going crazy there for a minute.

DogHouseMom 02-17-2012 07:55 PM

I've learned the "order" that my local BK want's to hear me say in. I can't order a #4 with cheese extra pickle no onion and a diet coke. I have to order #4, medium size, diet coke, add cheese, heavy pickle and no onion.

part of the problem is the registers they use - the registers ask them the questions in a specific order and they can't bypass question 1 to get to question 2 or 3 - just because the customer blurted out question 2 or 3 before question 1.

In an attempt to make their systems fool proof, they've created fools.

nativetexan 02-17-2012 08:09 PM

they have so much noise going on there that they are probably deaf!!

lalaland 02-17-2012 09:37 PM

I went through a McDonald's drive through the other day and a gal was out by the menu taking orders because their intercom system had broken down. After taking my order she asked if that was "for here or to go". Got my laugh for the day!

cybermom 02-18-2012 03:56 AM

White or chocolate milk?

I was at a sit down restaurant and ordered white milk. The waitress asked "what is white milk?". I was so surprised that I said "there is chocoate milk and white milk and I don't want chocolate". We never saw that waitress again the entire meal. I think she was a little embarrassed. I was a little embarrassed, too because I'm not that outspoken normally.

orangeroom 02-18-2012 04:14 AM

Too funny! Sorry for all the drive thru issues everyone is having. I think I've only gone through a drive thru twice since my galbladder was removed last August. I suppose it can be challenging for those employees. Should they wait until the customer has stated the whole order or cut them off in order to ask their questions?

jbud2 02-18-2012 05:10 AM

I like McDonald's biscuits. At the drive-thru, I'd order a hot tea (have to be specific on that!! HOT) and a PLAIN biscuit. Do you want butter and jelly for the biscuit? NO just plain . . ..

mltquilt 02-18-2012 05:20 AM

It's not only drive thru restaurants. DH's favorite peeve is restaurants where they ask if you want cream for your coffee and you say no then still receive a handful of coffee creamers.

Yeah and if you ask for a buttered biscuit, they soak it in butter. They can never just do a little bit. It's all or nothing

HollyDav 02-18-2012 05:28 AM

I drink coffee "dark no sugar" try getting that right at the drive through. Especially if there is high school kid running the window. Kids just don't get "dark coffee" I've learned to check it, usually it's so creamy I can't drink it. Have to go in and have them pour half our and add black coffee back in. Sheesh.

ptquilts 02-18-2012 05:54 AM

Reminds me why I like to eat at home!!!

NancyBelly 02-18-2012 08:42 AM

I spent years trying to explain to fast food places that my son only wanted a piece of cheese on a bun. There are no keys on registers to press for that one. We've gotten every combination of sandwich instead of the piece of cheese on a bun. There were times when I just wanted to jump the counter and make the darn thing myself!

I find this happens so many times and also at my bank, after you tell them to deposit the check in the checking account she asks do you want this in your savings account or your checking account They just don't listen.

NancyBelly 02-18-2012 08:44 AM

Gotta say, I don't know what "dark coffee" is either. Is it black or does it have cream in it? Or does it refer to dark roasted rather than the lighter roast?

This reminded my husband of the time we were eating at a nice restaurant and ordered chicken. The waitress asked what kind of gravy we wanted. I said ""Chicken gravy". She laughed and even called another waitress over to hear my reply. The second waitress said "Theres no such thing as chicken gravy", and laughed too. So I said "What type of gravy do you have?" They answered "Brown or white." I knew better than to question them any further so just agreed to white, assuming it was like milk gravy. It was, sort of. Next day I was telling this to several co-workers and they also had never heard of chicken gravy!!! Only one who was over 60 said she vaguely remembered her mother making it. I, my daughter, many friends, etc. make it all the time. Are we unusual?

catmcclure 02-18-2012 12:54 PM

A chain of restaurants serves hot dogs and hamburgers. The menu lists a Deluxe Hamburger and a Deluxe Cheeseburger. I always order a Deluxe Hamburger. Invariably they ask me if I want cheese on my hamburger. I realize they're just going by the rote responses given by management. I sometimes respond politely and say "No." Other times, I ask them if I look senile, and what part of "hamburger" do they not understand?

SUZAG 02-18-2012 01:27 PM

Did anybody watch Undercover Boss last night? The CEO of Checkers/Rally was coming into the stores as a new hire regular employee. It really gave me an appreciation for what the fast food worker is going through...I did it as a teenager but of course, technology hadn't arrived yet to mess it up and everybody walked up to the counter and gave their order in person...lol I really think people were nicer back then also, or maybe I was too naive to notice...Remember those days?

You don't say which part of the country you are from but for my ex-mother-in-law, from Kentucky, milk gravy was the only gravy there was, and boy was it good!

caspharm 02-18-2012 02:34 PM

Too much has been dumbed down. For example, the registers are set so most people don't even know how to make change without the register telling them. I know this is supposed to cut down errors, but please, is it that hard? People don't know how or don't want to think outside the box, truly.

ok as a bank teller i do have to comment on this - i don't mean it to sound mean or nasty. But the bank i work at the upper management EXPECTS us to repeat what the customer is doing. they actually listen to make sure we are repeating it back to them. so it is not that we don't listen - it is part of our job.

Grace creates 02-18-2012 02:45 PM

well it's usually kids working anyway and they are working

sewgarden 02-18-2012 02:45 PM

I always ask for black tea. I always get a little jug of milk with it so I tell them to take it back. One day I ordered myself black tea and my husband a white coffee so he got black coffee and I got white tea. I'm quite sure these people just don't listen.

seamstome 02-18-2012 04:42 PM

My favorite was when we went out to a nice restaurant. For dessert, the one guy ordered pie ala mode and could you warm that up for me--just stick in the microwave a little bit is fine. Waitress came back and asked did he want it microwaved before or after she put the ice cream on?????

Or the time my friend got a coke at a Mexican place and it just didnt taste right and when the waitress came around, she asked for a tea instead. We told the waitress why she wanted a different drink, thinking she would check the carbonation unit. She looked at the drink, like that would do any good. Then sipped it and said it tastes alright to me, sure you dont want to just keep it??? My girlfriend said NO. Then she offered it to the rest of the table. Yes we were charged for the coke and the tea.....NO we didnt tip.

Peckish 02-18-2012 04:59 PM

We microwave ice cream all the time in my family, just enough to make it soft.

I would have complained to the management about the coke and service, though.

jeaninmaine 02-18-2012 05:00 PM

I'm from the Northeast, I make chicken gravy all the time, or beef gravy with a roast, turkey gravy with turkey or sausage gravy with biscuits. I've never made just brown or white gravy.

Ditto!! reminds me of a time at a buffet down south (Mississippi) - one of the choices of vegetables was a brown-green puree - I asked the staff what it was and got the reply - Squash. I asked, summer squash or winter squash? Got a strange look, "It's squash."
Between that and thinking the hominy was creamed corn, it was an interesting lunch.

But commenting on most of the posts, let's not forget that YOUR transaction is one of hundreds per day for the employee. If they normally ask "cream or sugar" when they hear the word coffee, chances are they will ask you even though you said black coffee.

KyKaren1949 02-19-2012 05:12 AM

What I find pitiful is when the bill is say $4.79, you give the person a $5 bill and then say, oh wait, let me give you some change and hand them the 4 cents so you'll get a quarter back. If they've already put in the $5, they have no clue how to make change for that. Sad!!!

Beth33 02-19-2012 08:24 AM

I purchased 7 items at a grocery store and the girl asked me if I wanted a bag - I said yes please, I don't know how to juggle.

Stitchit123 02-19-2012 08:26 AM

yrs ago DH and 2 of our worker GUYS went to a sit down restaurant the cute perky waitress comes and takes our orders-- we all ordered the usual burger/fries but I wanted the Swiss Mushroom burger on a plate NO BREAD well a bit later Perky comes out with the guys meals and leaves we figured she couldn't carry 4 plates at a time the guys are 1/2 finished and still no meal for me she ignores my attempts to get her attention but DH gets her attention 1st try when she comes to the table he asked her where my wifes lunch is -she replies ""Oh I thought she was kidding""does she really want it ? DH says lets go so we all head for the door -she runs after us with the bill and all 4 meals are on it -the manager heard all of this and he takes the bill and hands it to Perky and tells her that their lunch was on her.I wonder if she ever figured out what she did wrong and how many meals she bought for customers

roseirish48 02-19-2012 08:37 AM

years ago I was out shopping with my sister and decided to stop at local Bridgeman's for lunch. She ordered her hamburger first and I told the waitress I would have the same. My sister's lunch came and the waitress set a empty plate in front of me and walked away. We were craning our necks to see over the counter to make sure the burger hadn't slid to the floor while also trying to get the waitress' attention. before long we were looking for Allen Funt and the "Candid Camera" crew. We finally managed to snag another waitress and after she told us "this isn't my station" got her to listen to our dilemma. She rounded up our waitress who came back and profusely apologized. She thought i had said" just a plate" and thought we were going to share the burger. My burger was forthcoming and we were given a discount on the bill for the inconvenience.

karenpatrick 02-19-2012 08:40 AM

Every time I go to a local sub shop and order a BLT they ask me if I want lettuce and tomato on it. Seriously??!!

cathyvv 02-19-2012 08:47 AM

No, you're not unusual. the gravies in restaurants are from packages, not from chicken broth. I think it's very rare these days to make gravy from 'scratch', hence, the packaging on the gravy packets is called brown or white.

IraJane 02-19-2012 10:19 AM

My favorite is when I ask for an ice cream cone, and they ask if it is "for here or to go". I'd like to ask "does it really make a difference?"

No, my Mom growing up always made chicken gravy when we had fried chicken. I'm 64 but have only made it a few times as I don't make a lot of gravy cause of the calories!

Rose_P 02-19-2012 10:45 AM

So true!

Some degree of deafness is much more common than most of us are aware, and it's more serious than even some doctors realize. I can testify from personal experience that a hearing loss that is considered "slight" can be a major problem. The first thing to go for most people is high frequency sounds, which include for example, the letters "s", "f" and "th". If you have your word processor find and remove all those letter in a document and try to read it, you will see that it's not always easy to make sense, and it definitely slows you down. This is what it's like for a person to listen if they have a hearing loss, or even if they don't but are trying to function in an environment that is too noisy. Add to that the difficulty of coping with the deficient speakers at most drive-up windows and the problem that many of those workers have of taking the next order while speaking to the customer who is already at the window paying and asking for extra mustard or whatever. Still, what part of wanting bacon on you bacon burger or Coke in your Coke is hard to comprehend? I've learned to check my order before driving off because it's wrong quite often.

As an aside, if you have a child (or spouse) who doesn't seem to be listening, have his/her hearing tested by a professional audiologist associated with a medical doctor and take a good hard look at anything that is described as a "slight" loss.
