Did you have a poodle skirt?

If you had a poodle skirt back in the 1950s, what color was it? I just got to wondering what colors these came in. It's one fashion trend I'd love to see return (for the teens, not me).

The ones that I remember (and wore) were grey with pink or white poodles.

snownannie 11-07-2011 04:53 PM

Same here. My daughter has one and her daughter wore it for 50's week at school this year.

Mine was grey. Mom made it for me when I was in the first grade, only it didn't have a poodle on it. She appliquéd a kitten chasing a ball of red yarn.

Sparky 11-07-2011 04:57 PM

Mine was white felt with pink poodles and I had a pink 2 pieced cardigan set to wear with it. And for a dance, thankfully black patten pumps not saddle shoes that I had to wear everyday! When I made my granddaughters I did pale pink felt with shocking pink poodles with black and white ribbon for trim/leash.

MissSandra 11-07-2011 04:58 PM

I don't but my grand daughters have them one in black with white poodles and pink with black poodles

dallasstar 11-07-2011 05:06 PM

Yes I had a poodle skirt. Red with white poodle. Loved It.

kriscraft99 11-07-2011 05:06 PM

pink with a black poodle :)

MissM 11-07-2011 06:02 PM

I had a white skirt with pink poodles. Sure wish I still had it. Even if I couldn't still wear it.

Sheila_H 11-07-2011 06:23 PM

I wasn't born then lol but I remember going through mom's hope chest of stuff one year for Halloween and found a beautiful pink skirt with the white poodle

ShabbyTabby 11-07-2011 06:24 PM

I had one...it was pink with white poodle made out of poms poms. Poodle had a black collar and leash made of sequins. The skirt was made out of felt. My Mom made it for me and my granddaughter now has it.

decky 11-07-2011 07:12 PM

I had one but darn if I remember what color it was.

nativetexan 11-07-2011 07:13 PM

KarenK 11-07-2011 08:07 PM

Gray with pink poodle! Worn with white sweater, bobbie sox, saddle shoes, hair pulled back in pony tail smack dab on the back of my head, white scarf tied around pony tail. Those were the days my friends! LOL

Jingle 11-08-2011 05:48 AM

I never had one, I do remember them.

lorimax5859 11-08-2011 06:57 AM

Had the skirt (can't remember the color though). Also had the penny loafers that you put a penny in the little slot on the front of the shoe. Remember?

Elegantly Amused blog recently had a "circle skirt" sew a-long for this: http://blog.caseybrowndesigns.com/ta...irt-sew-along/

I didn't make one in time with this, but I plan on making one as soon as I can. I have too many other projects to finish. >.<

PS - I didn't wander in until the early 1970s (please don't beat me...)

Mine too!! I wasn't born till '65, but I was in a performance choir in high school, and that was my outfit for our 50's medley, right down to the white scarf!! :)

Glenda m 11-08-2011 07:45 AM

Don't remember the color of the skirt, but the can-can was red. I really hated ironing that thing! Did you have pennys in your loafers? What about taps? Mom said no to that till she found out I just wanted the little ones. Not the 'all over the heel' kind.

raptureready 11-08-2011 07:51 AM

I wasn't born until 53 but my older sister had a couple. One was gray and one was pink. She didn't wear them very often though.

I wasn't born until a couple of months before the '50s ended, but those penny loafers were popular right up through the late '60s. I so wanted a pair, but I was pigeon toed as a child, and my mother made me wear corrective shoes. An aunt felt I should get to wear fun shoes once in a while and bought me a pair of loafers. I adored them so much, I went outside and danced in them. She warned me I'd wear them out, and I did, that same day, lol. Didn't matter, my mother wouldn't let me wear them anyway when she found out. By the time my feet were pronounced straight by the doctor, they were wide and I wasn't able to fit into most fashionable shoes, but I do remember having a pair of tassel loafers at some point.

Thanks, everyone, for your answers about poodle skirt colors. Also for the link to the round skirt site. You know. I'm really hankering for fifties womanly fashions these days, for some reason. Boat neck, three-quarter-sleeve tops, feminine blouses, round skirts... understand, I really live in jeans, but still.

mighty 11-08-2011 08:40 AM

I did not have one I was to little. I remember wanting one.

LadyElisabeth 11-08-2011 05:32 PM

I still have a black felt with white poodle and a pink felt with black poodle. I also have saddle shoes and a letter jacket.

sewn3w 11-09-2011 04:33 AM

Mine was black. It had a telephone (dial type!) on one side and the receiver on the other side with a red cord attaching them. My can-can was red with black and red plaid trim on the bottom.

Scraps 11-09-2011 05:01 AM

Mine was gray -

sewmuchmore 11-09-2011 05:14 AM

I did not have one but my sister did grey and pink and black poodle !!!

TanyaL 11-09-2011 03:49 PM

I think mine was magenta with a white poodle on it. I know the poodle was white. The skirt was felt. The poodle had a collar on it and a metal leash that was swagged - maybe up to the waist, I'm not sure where the other end was fastened.

quiltjoey 11-09-2011 04:18 PM

What a great memory that I hadn't thought about in years! I had a black taffeta skirt that had velvet swirls on it. The poodle was white and made out of some kind of curly material (don't know what). The leash and collar were made out of pink plastic of some kind. The collar had rhinestones on it. The skirt came down to midcalf and rustled when I walked! It was like I was a princess when I wore it! I wore black saddle oxfords with "bobby" socks! I usually wore a white ruffelly blouse with a black cardigan sweater. What a hoot I must have been!! How I would loved to have had a picture me in it...

MadQuilter 11-09-2011 05:54 PM

Born in '58 so I have neither poodle nor skirt.

luvstoquilt 11-10-2011 09:27 AM

My poodle skirt was black with a white poodle. I had 2 other felt skirts as well..One was aqua with a big snowflake on it made with rhinestones the other was pink and had rows or cording around it about 2/3 of the way down and again nearer the bottom. I loved those skirts!

gramajo 11-10-2011 09:40 AM

Mine was turquoise felt--don't remember the color of the poodle. Wore it with white twin sweater set, bobby sox & black & white saddle shoes. My crinoline was white. This was in the late 50s. My dad always made us wear a seat belt in the car (he had installed racing belts in his '57 Vette--long before belts long before belts were standard equipment in cars). The belt was much wider than standard belts are now. It scrunched my skirt & made it all wrinkly. I was so upset. LOL

Murphy 11-10-2011 09:40 AM

Red with white poodle.

quilter1943 11-10-2011 04:36 PM

Absolutely!!! A dark royal blue with white poodle. I must have really whined for it because we didn't have much money when I was in high school.

It'sJustMe 11-10-2011 05:03 PM

Mine was medium charcoal grey felt / white poodle / pink accents.
I really, really, really wanted the pink skirt, but in retrospect the grey was a better choice and it's still a really, really, really favorite color of mine today.
Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane.

irishrose 11-10-2011 05:27 PM

I had a full circle felt skirt, but I did NOT want a Poodle on it. I found a pink skirt with huge pink buttons all the way down the front. One crinoline?? I can remember wearing at least four at a time. Such fun with those desks. The skirt took up the whole aisle and all available space under the desk.

Linda - K. 11-10-2011 06:56 PM

I had a scottie skirt. It was gray with the scottie in a plaid sweater on the skirt. Never got the poodle one but did want one. When I was 11 in 1958 and I could no longer wear the skirt I cut out the scottie and made a doll skirt of the gray felt.

Almost forgot! About 15 years ago my youngest sister (born in 1958 so was way too young to know about poodle skirt craze) asked me to make one for a halloween costume for her. It was a pink skirt with white poodle. I told her about the sweater she need to wear and the high-on-the-head pony tail with a chiffon scarf tied on it. Then she got a pair of white tennis shoes and painted them to look like B/W saddle shoes. I had an elastic cinch belt I'd bought in Hawaii some years back to go with it also and I told her to roll her socks down--not fold down. She also had a pair of white framed cat's eye glasses from my Mom's stuff that she took the lenses out of and wore to the party. She won 1st prize!!! The older people she worked with commented that they were amazed at the details she had from that era then she told them I coached her on it--and she revealed my age to them!!!

fayzer 11-10-2011 07:52 PM

Mine was gray with a white poodle with pink on it. I wore it with saddle oxfords, bobby socks (we wore 2 pair so that the roll down way "fat") and a pink sweater twin set. I loved my two crinolines. I thought I was hot stuff. I remember starching the crinolines and laying them in a circle on the grass to dry in the sunshine. I remember how they scratched my legs even with a half slip on. LOL

Lisanne 11-10-2011 07:58 PM

These are so much fun to read! I'd never known about the crinolines or rolling the socks down (never saw that in pictures). And some of the skirts were made of felt???? Was it washable, or did it have to be dry cleaned?

deemail 11-10-2011 07:58 PM

My skirt was gray with the large poodle with the curly 'poodle-do,' pink collar, gold soutache leash from collar to waistband...my little sister had the same gray skirt but with white pony, and pink bows in his mane. They were made by my mom's best friend from high school, but my mom made the crinolines...3 different colors of pink from baby to rose... stacked till they showed! Thirty years later when Reebocks came out with saddle shoe leather tennies, I was there first in line...I have them in blue/white, black/white and red/white...still wear them when i'm in the mood! She knew how to use the ruffler on her machine and my sister and I had crinolines in every color...she used to wash them and then spread them on the lawn in a circle and spray them with her own mixture of starch and water and leaving them till they dried! Nylon net used to go on sale for 10 yds for dollar back then...I had one (black) for a black taffeta party dress (8th grade) that she sprayed with starch and then while it was wet, she sprinkled with silver glitter to match the trim on the dress...I'm sure I left glitter behind me everywhere but I loved that dress with it's matching crinoline!
