do you take a nap. I know this is a problem for women but is it just menopausal women or women of all ages?

luvstitches 10-21-2011 03:12 AM

I'm 47 and premenopausal...I think.
I have never been able to sleep all night. This morning I felt so refreshed because I slept in til 6:15! lol

twinkle 10-21-2011 03:13 AM

My sleep patterns are all out and I usually go to bed in the early hours of the morning and then sleep late. Once I'm asleep nothing wakes me though.

niizh 10-21-2011 03:19 AM

"SLEEP" Had to look up definition of word!

hannajo 10-21-2011 03:20 AM

I always sleep the whole night through. Of course, I'm 33 and don't have children yet. I'm trying to enjoy this for as long as it lasts...

If I get 7-8 hours of sleep at night, I usually don't need to nap.

brushandthimble 10-21-2011 03:22 AM

I don't sleep all night, at the least I wake and have a sip of water I now keep next to my bed. I usually wake at least twice a night, often need to go to the bathroom. If I am lucky I may get 4 to 6 hours once in a blue moon. Usually I wake every 2 hours, don't remember when I didn't, most likely before my 2nd and 3rd sons; over 30 years ago.
Napping? if it is early enough I may try to take 20 minutes, if it is to late then I am up either all night or wake like 2 or 3am; so I try not to nap.

jmabby 10-21-2011 03:24 AM

I vary, right now I've been sleeping from 1am to 6am. If I drink too much coffee it is 4am to 9am.

woody 10-21-2011 03:38 AM

I'm 45 and I think hormones have a large part to play in my terrible sleep patterns lately. I have no trouble getting to sleep no matter what time I go to bed but then I often wake at around 2 am and toss and turn for hours before nodding off again usually around 4-30 or 5 am. I would get up and sew but I feel so tired I think I would just make silly mistakes and get even more frustrated :(

JanetP 10-21-2011 03:42 AM

What is sleep? I fall asleep very quickly, but just can't stay asleep. Usually wake up about three hours after closing my eyes and then I catnap the rest of the night. Been doing this for years. Guess it's a habit now.

plainpat 10-21-2011 03:44 AM

I'm way past menopause & woke at 3:47 today.Try not to nap...or will wake even earlier.

I wake up a couple times during the night; yes it goes back to menopause (30 years ago). And yes, I usually lay down after lunch, mostly to rest my arthritic spine, but sometimes doze off for a half hour.

AlwaysQuilting 10-21-2011 03:56 AM

I am almost 61 and have had sleep problems for approx 10 or 15 yrs. I have recently begun a health 'kick' and started drinking some a.c.v. (apple cider vinegar with the mother in the bottle) and raw honey twice daily.
Call me crazy but I have been sleeping better and my hot flashes have ceased!

QuiltnNan 10-21-2011 04:06 AM

I just heard on some news story that women don't really need more than 6.5 hours sleep to function well. I manage about 6-7.

grann of 6 10-21-2011 04:14 AM

I would sleep a whole lot better if my Great Dane didn't take her half out of the middle of the bed. She likes to sleep crosswise instead of lengthwise, so that has a definite bearing on how well I sleep. I know, I know. Well, YOU COME AND GET HER OFF THE BED!!!!

Judith1005 10-21-2011 04:41 AM

I have insomia so bad since i went into menapause 8 years ago. and i was only 38. once i finally get to sleep, i sleep well. it's just getting there.

and my mom sleeps terrible. she probably falls asleep about 7pm. but, then shes awake by 1 or 2 am. (or less)

no naps. bad news. messes up what sleep we do get.

SouthPStitches 10-21-2011 04:52 AM

Used to be an Olympic sleeper....so miss my "former life". First came perimenopause, then family loss, over the top job stress, then menopause. Between husband's snoring, my hotflashes, body aches and frequent potty calls seems like I'm doing everything but sleeping. Seems like all of this gets worse around a full moon and also during the two time changes. Retiring the end of March and hope this alone will turn my life around a little.

Mad Mimm 10-21-2011 04:53 AM

I am up once a night with my 7-month old and often have trouble falling back asleep. I use a Melatonin supplement to help me, but if my little one wakes after 3 or 4 am, I am often up for the duration. And no, unless I happen to fall asleep on a piece of furniture for 10-20 minutes, I do not get to nap. That is a pity, I LOVE naps!

GingerK 10-21-2011 04:57 AM

I usually wake up every 2 hours. And I can usually tell what time it is without looking at the clock--it happens that regularly. I have a bad hip and I wake up when I try to change positions. If, for some reason I DON'T wake up to move, the morning is sheer He-double hockey sticks.

amyjo 10-21-2011 05:04 AM

yeah, have that problem too. go to bed about 1130 or so, then up at 145 to go to potty, back to bed, toss and turn a while and then might sleep a while back up to potty and so on. my knee is the killer and one hip.

Jeanniejo 10-21-2011 05:06 AM

I wake up about 10 times a night and usually have a hard time going back to sleep. My Dr gave me some sleeping pills (15 for a month???). Anyway I don't take them if I have to work the next day. Otherwise if I can't get back to sleep I get up and go to my sewing room, turn on the TV and get something done. When I get tired I go back to bed.

LindaR 10-21-2011 05:20 AM

I can usually sleep about 4 hours and then read and then sleep again....have been doing this for years

KyKat 10-21-2011 05:24 AM

I'm so relieved to know it's not just me! whew. Last night I went to bed at 1:15. I woke up thinking I had slept the whole night through for a change, and was ready to get up to go to work (regular time is 6:15) Looked at the clock. 1:45. *sigh*. Again at 3, 4:30. And was awake at 6, waiting for the clock to alarm at 6:15. So, no, haven't slept well for the last 12 years. Hubby says he's going to sell the furnace. Doesn't need it, he can use me to heat the whole house.

Honeynga 10-21-2011 05:29 AM

This subject was discussed not long ago here on the Board and I keep seeing over and over that sleep is a real problem with a lot of folks, including me !

I can usually fall asleep before 11 pm, but wake several times during the night, IF I ever get 4 hour of uninterrupted sleep I'm awake for the day. Grumpy, irritable, whiny, sluggish, fuzzy thinking, can't make decisions or stay with any task for a while and it is so frustrating.

My dr gave me Trazadone to help me sleep but it causes such outlandish sometimes violent dreams I can't/don't take it.

I've tried melatonin, no caffeine after 3 pm....I did read recently that someone mentioned that she found that if she didn't drink enough water during the day it would cause her to lose sleep...so I'm been better about drinking more water.

I decided just this week that I would try and take a nap during the day, but another problem is I can't possibly close my eyes during the day even in a darkened room.

Sounds weird but I really enjoy the winter months more because we more "dark" time and I feel like I sleep more.

Now that I'm retired the time change doesn't bother me as much but it certainly did when I was working...found that it took me more than a week to adjust.....

I often get up and get on QB just to see who is chatting....and there is almost always someone on there, especially west coast folks.....

Don't have answers, just understanding.

blueangel 10-21-2011 05:31 AM

I usually sleep all night plus sometimes a couple naps a day.

mamaw 10-21-2011 06:00 AM

Some nights I sleep great and others are spent tossing and turning the night away. Doc says it is menopausal.
I don't like naps...rather stay up all day tired lol.

athomenow 10-21-2011 06:50 AM

I haven't slept well in 40+ years. I blame the children! I take a mild sleep aid and go to bed really late. Don't sleep all night but manage to string enough hours together somehow. I don't nap because it makes me nervous. Go figure.

quilter68 10-21-2011 07:32 AM

Six or seven hours. Any more than that and I am in a grog all day. But now that I am 70 I can nap! I am always up 'till midnight.

Same here, I even bought the 120 decible alarm to get me up for work, I sleep through it most of the time too.I have never liked to get up early and have worked 12 hour nights for years. That sure messes with your sleep patterns lol.

Twisted Quilter 10-21-2011 07:42 AM

I really miss a good nites sleep. I remember when I was younger the old-timers were always talking about insomnia. I think I've arrived! If I can get 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep, it's a miracle. I haven't had 8 hours of sleep in the last 15 years, unless I'm ill. :?

Melrose R 10-21-2011 08:20 AM

This week, 4am wake up. Next week? Who knows! LOL

I have a hard time getting to sleep, and then staying asleep. I have to take meds to help me. Definitely helps with my pain levels!

kateyb 10-21-2011 09:24 AM

I sleep about 5-6 hours a night but have always been a napper. Menopause didn't seem to change that. Used to fall asleep in Algebra class right after lunch. Unfortunately the teacher lived across the street from us. Not pretty.

My wonderful German Shepard did the same thing. I complained about it because I felt that was the reason I couldn't sleep good. He died very unexpectedly on Oct. 2nd (massive heart attack) and I miss him so much. I would gladly give up the space to have him back. Enjoy him while you can.

tallchick 10-21-2011 12:27 PM

I am peri-menopausal and it just depends there are some days I sleep well and other days that I just can't sleep for nothing. No matter what between 5-630am I am awake and need to get up and get going. Naps??? What are those I feel guilty if I take a nap.

alikat110 10-21-2011 03:22 PM

Horrie sleep pattern!!!! Thinking of ways to make lifestyle changes to change this!!!

Willa 10-21-2011 03:54 PM

Usually sleep all night. After working third shift for years I now will take a nap once in a while during the day.

Pam B 10-21-2011 05:34 PM

I don't sleep real well at night. If I wake up during the night, many times I will just go ahead and get up and do something. It beats just laying there and watching the clock. As far as napping goes, I don't intentionally take a nap during the day (because if I do, I can't fall asleep at night) but sometimes I do doze off after I get home from a day at school.
