I went to one of my married DD's yesterday and she pulled out a (new to me...I never knew she had one) pressure cooker, threw her food in and 30 min. later we had a wonderful dinner.
Scared me to death because I remember seeing a pressure cooker blow it's lid off at a friend's house when I was growing up.
So I've never had the guts to use one.

But her dinner was done so quickly and everything was so tender that I'm trying to talk myself into getting one and trying it too.

Does anyone here use one?
Do you have to change your recipes at all?

tomilu 03-13-2011 05:56 AM

DH loves them and I hate them. He is the only one who uses ours.

KimmieH 03-13-2011 06:00 AM

My cousin Ann swears by her Presto one. May in Jersey

My mom used one all time when I was growing up for cooking and canning. I use to use one when kids were growing up and still have one but don't use it much anymore. They are nice but its something you do need to watch while useing it. I would never put food in it and then go outside and do yard work or go downstairs and sew.

DesiG 03-13-2011 06:06 AM

I use mine all the time. I haven't used it for canning yet, but I can get a rack accessory to convert it to a pressure canner- something I may pursue this summer if the prices keep going up.

trueimage 03-13-2011 06:10 AM

I just bought an All-American canner! I don't plan to cook with it though. I can remember my mom frequently cooking with one.

SuzanneG 03-13-2011 06:10 AM

I used to have one and the thing made me nervous as all get out with all that pressure built up inside! :D Now I stick to my slow cooker and just love it. :D

I use mine a lot! It is an electric one...do not think I would even let a non-electric in the house...too scary!!!

nana katie 03-13-2011 06:33 AM

I have 3 and use them all the time .I grew up with my Mom and Granny using them and the secret is to not have the heat up too high.

tutt 03-13-2011 06:37 AM

I use one. Never had a problem, just need to control the steam. If the valve starts giggling too much, turn the heat down. My Momma had her's blow up once and we had black eyed peas falling off the ceiling for days. We still laugh about that one.

I had one and loved it. before the fire killed it and I used it all the time to make soups a stews. the easiest way to relieve the presure is to put it onder the cold water tap and gently run cold water over it when it stops steaming it is safe to remove the lid. when we get another house built it will be one of the first things I but for my kitchen.
any of the pre mixed bases for casseroles will add flavour to your cooking but I like to use herbs and spices. when it is cooked so quickly you don't need as much salt as all the flavour is retained. hope this helps you to decide whether to buy one or not, when my children were at home it was in use every day.

dungeonquilts 03-13-2011 07:03 AM

I have a roast, carrots, onion pressure cooking as I type. My oven went out and use mine alot. I have also made rice & meatloaf in mine. Yes, they will blow and you can have a mess...however, if used as in directions they make a great meal in less then 30 minutes. The tough meat will be (usually) tender & that is a plus with the cost be pay. Alot of recipes out on the web. No, U don't have to change recipe or at least I don't.

CoyoteQuilts 03-13-2011 07:03 AM

Have used one for years. Mostly use it for roasts. Just brown in butter, onions and any spices you want, add water, seal and cook. The magic of the pressure cooker is STEAM....... you need WATER to produce STEAM.... SO DON'T FORGET THE WATER!

That is the magic of the pressure cooker. If you forget the water they will blow and yes, you will have food every where!

I have to admit, that was always a fear of mine, that it would just blow our dinner all over the kitchen! :D But seriously, that really is one other thing I didn't care for with the pressure cooker, having to 'babysit' it. I can walk away from my slow cooker and not worry. But I love that there are options out there to suit each of us. :-D

lynnsim 03-13-2011 07:08 AM

My DH uses ours frequently. I don't, just never got in the habit. Guess I'm scared of the steam, too. Good advicve here; I think you should get one.

LindaR 03-13-2011 07:15 AM

I used to use one all the time...now I use crock pot..did have one shoot stuff all over the kitchen ceiling but really my fault cuz I left it too long :<(

milp04 03-13-2011 07:24 AM

I remember growing eating dinner quite often at a friend's house, whose mother used a pressure cooker all the time. The meals were always delicious.

The older pressure cookers did need to be watched closely. If I were to purchase one today I would make sure it is an electric digital cooker. They have safety built into their use. It is very easy to release the pressure.

With the state of the economy and budget money issues it is possible to save at the grocery store. You can buy the cheapest cuts of meat thus saving on the grocery bill.

If you are pressed for time at dinner time I would have it at the top of my "Wish" list. They have specials for prices and easy payment plans making the purchase very manageable.

Since your DD is already using one, she could help you get started and share recipes between each other. I wouldn't hesitate with getting and using a pressure cooker.

OK this is a dumb question but when you say "water" do you actually mean water or just liquid of any kind?
I didn't see my DD put water in it but maybe she did while I wan't paying attention. I know she put some chicken broth in.

sawsan 03-13-2011 07:34 AM

U AlwaysQuilting
I always use pressure cooker and quilting.......lol, It saves time, gas, and less heat around and dirt.
Not afraid from if u use it in a right way
Do not make it full, flame not too high
If your food makes a special foamy surface like blood in meat u have to remove that foamy before close
For dill that makes foam because of skin don't make the flame too high and the food half the cooker or less.
Leave it till stops then remove the knop
And 4 each kind there is a manuall to read carefully
Water is must one cup each 1 cooking hour , not high flame:oops:
Good luck

Never knew they made electric ones. I was raised with the regular ones, way back then in the hills. I can remember with absolute clarity what Grandma's kitchen looked like when one exploded. There were pieces of meat on the cabinets and table and chairs and even sliding down the windows. Grandma just rubbed her face with her apron and went to the porch to sit down for a while, and let her visiting daughters clean it up. (I think one of them was supposed to be watching it)

I've never used one, even though DH bought one and used it himself a few times.

Janetlmt 03-13-2011 08:27 AM

I have a digital pressure cooker from QVC and I love it. When it was time for our granddaughter to eat baby food I made all of it myself. I use it to make soup, roasts and veggies. I made applesauce and froze it. The cooker is very safe. Most of all, it is fast! My daughter bought one and she loves it.
Peace and Blessings,

Riversong 03-13-2011 08:29 AM

I got one as a gift.Electric from QVC or HSN,I forget. I absolutely love it!!! So easy to use, fast and the food is sooo tender and good. My hubby has dentures, which he seldom wears at home, sne he can "gum"right through the meat. I would reccommend them to everyone!!

I have three. A huge one for canning and two smaller ones. I will probably give one to DD to try. She's been wanting one and I really don't use them as much as I did when everyone was at home.
I've never had a problem with mine but MY mom would never touch one. Grandma used one alot though with no problems that I recall. I did have a friend that had one blow up once- what a mess!
I think they are easier to use on a gas stove rather than electric but that could just be me.

amandasgramma 03-13-2011 09:24 AM

I have one and use it! Especially when camping....it saves on propane fuel.

I brown a pork loin roast in it. Drain off the fat, add 1 cup water, 1 slice onion and salt and pepper. Bring the temp to when it starts sputtering. I let it sputter for 55 minutes, then let it cool. That doesn't take long...do NOT put cold water on the pressure cooker -- it will just make it quick cooking and the roast won't be done. Then we slice up and enjoy. The next day, the roast is so tender we shred it and make BBQd pork sandwiches.

Tropical 03-13-2011 09:27 AM

I have been afraid of them since one blew up on my Mom when I was little. There was food everywhere and the guage hit the ceiling. Right then I knew I would never use one. I was right.

Chasing Hawk 03-13-2011 09:34 AM

I have this one and love it.

I have one and use it occasionally. My husband likes pinto beans but at this high altitude (6200ft) dry beans are impossible to cook without a pressure cooker. It is always useful for cooking tougher cuts of beef. I have never had any trouble with mine. Just read the instruction manual and follow their safety rules.

wandascrap 03-13-2011 09:50 AM

I have an electric pressure cooker. I make alot of meals in it. Roast, dried beans, chicken, pork, soups, and fruit deserts. I love it and would recommend it. The main thing to remember is that it get's really hot inside and the steam is coming out all the time, so make sure you have the right amount of liquid for the amount of time you use it. We've burned alot of meals when we first started using it. I also use the basket that came with it, nearly every time I use it, keeps the food off the bottom of the cooker and the chances of it burning are lower. Hope that helps.

I use one all the time, quick meals. My favorite is kiebia(sp) white potatoes peeled, sourkrat with juice, onions, carrots, with a little garlic powder. Add some extra water, great meal. Also do the same with porkchops. My mom makes potato soup, yummy! if it runs dry thats when it explodes!

quiltilicious 03-13-2011 09:55 AM

My grandfather, who lived with us, used to make his dinner in one every day. He'd take the liquid from cooking his chicken and veggies and save it for lunch the next day. I never thought it was unusual that he ate separate from the rest of the family for most meals (he kept to his own schedule), or that he at the same thing every day. He lived to 105.

I have an All-American pressure canner, and I managed to burn myself pretty good last summer while canning some beans. I was impatient and didn't wait long enough to open the thing. It took me a few weeks to not be scared of it and use it again.

I haven't tried cooking regular food in a pressure cookier, but I do see them using it on Iron Chef.

ohiobuckeye 03-13-2011 10:08 AM

We just bought an electric pressure cooker at Lowe's on the recommendation of a friend. Haven't tried it out yet, but probably will sometime this week. I used a pressure canner last summer and had no problems with it....I'm enjoying my tomatoes in Chili today!

MadQuilter 03-13-2011 10:32 AM

My sister's blew up in her kitchen once - Gulasch all over the ceiling. No thanks! Culinary granades are not for me.

I make stuffed peppers all the time in mine, I use one large can of prepared tomato sauce and I add extra water, it needs a good deal of liquid so it doesn't burn or blow up, and then you have a nice red sauce for the potatoes, which I also add.

maryb119 03-13-2011 03:38 PM

I used one a lot when I was canning from the garden. I cooked a roast in it once. I just followed the directions and watched what I was doing and had no problems.

Pam B 03-13-2011 03:41 PM

I have one. Have not used it for at least 25 years. I really prefer to just plan ahead and either use my crock-pot or cook in the oven or on the grill. But...there is nothing wrong with using a pressure cooker...it is handy to get a meal on the table in a short amount of time.

bgullett 03-13-2011 03:43 PM

My mom used hers all the time and I have a sister who does as well. I am afraid of them.
