That is the most beautiful darning egg I've ever seen. Just wonderful!

Where did you get it? Family heirloom?

I live in a really really small town, and years ago it had a little shop where the guy did upholstery. He went out of business, maybe died?, it was over 25 years ago, and they had an auction. I spent many weekends at farm auctions with my dad, and at this one I bought a box of 'stuff' for $2 because there was an old paper needlebook, which I collect, in the box. A guy asked me about something in the box, I can't remember what it was but I know it wasn't something I was interested in, and I sold it to him for $2
It was the start of a new collection, darning eggs

Same here. I say "oh darn" as I toss it in the bin.

Yes, I darn our better socks, but the cheaper ones get used for dust mitts.

I am fortunate enough to have inherited my mom's stash of darning thread and my grandma's darning egg.

ADVICE PLEASE: I knitted socks with 4-ply acrylic yarn so to darn a hole in one, should I use the same yarn but only use one or two strands of it to avoid undue thickness around the perimeter of the hole?

Yes, 2 strands would be advisable...

I have loved reading this..my DH and I have often wondered if anyone else darns sox like I do..now we know. I darn his cause he had an accident many years ago and wears expensive sox..but I would do it anyway. I like darning...I find it relaxing and I agree with those who mentioned a sense of accomplishment. I have a collection of darning eggs..over 40 of them, which I display in various ways. I use darning cotton which I have had for years.

Enablers -- every one of us! and thank goodness for that, too!
