Embroidery thread would not hold up - and yarn is too bulky - so is there still a source for darning thread - it came on a ball. Wish I had my grandmother's stash that I can bet got burned or thrown out - but that too would eventually be used up - just have not found the source to get more of it. I'd love to save some of the expensive socks my dh wears out - he has one bad foot from cancer surgery and he wears the socks out so easily, as he walks crooked with his foot - but the socks are of the thick and absorbent kind to keep the foot healthy - so like to save them as much as possible. any ideas?

my mil taught me how to shortly after dh & I were married. She gave me a darning egg one end for sock the other was very thin for fingers of gloves. I haven't darned in a long time but have a pair of wool socks I am going to work on. One person on the thread said she bought darning thread it was next to crochet cotton. At a yarn shop I recently had gotten a thread of sorts to use while knitting toes and heels- would that work if you can't find the darning yarn/thread?

Yep! Can't find these babies just any time of the year, so I have to make them last! I usually can only find them around this time of the year, so I stock up. They are great for keeping my toes from rubbing blisters on each other (I have hammertoes that curve like "C"s, instead of curling under, and the toes rub on the ones next to them).

Notice the pink toe on the right...it's curving toward the middle toe, which rubs blisters on that toe.

I made some warm wool socks for my son-in-law a couple of Christmas's ago and he loved them. Well when he got holes in the toes my daughter brought them back to me to fix. I just cut off the toe part and just reknit them. they lasted a year. Now they are back again ready to be fixed again. I think when I get time after Christmas, I should make him another pair.

I had inherited a darning egg from my grandma - I used it once just to try it. This was a good reminder! I do have at least one good pair of socks with a hole in the toe that I don't want to throw away(the hole is at the big toe - so I always try to put it on the other foot so it's not where it will get poked through and be annoying! ). I think I'll have to see if can find some darning yarn/thread and try it again. Does JoAnn's carry it?

Tina,

I haven't seen regular old-fashioned darning thread in many years in any local stores. I even looked at the shops in the Amish area of Ohio, where I thought for sure I would find it, but none there.

What I use is crocheting cotton that comes in a big softball sized roll. It is very cheap and wears very good.

I looked at the links OkiePastor just posted, but those prices seem high to me!
