Yes I darn I even have darning thread,Don't remember where I got it It came on small cardboard tubes,{ somewhat like crochet thread comes on}Several colors to each box of 10. :-)

I have done a few but used to save by the bag full and take to my mother for they are mydh wool sox's for work not cheep.
They was $10 a pair ad not are $13 a pair so I will now he is retired but still wears in the colder winter weather... ConnieF |

Yep! Can't find these babies just any time of the year, so I have to make them last! I usually can only find them around this time of the year, so I stock up. They are great for keeping my toes from rubbing blisters on each other (I have hammertoes that curve like "C"s, instead of curling under, and the toes rub on the ones next to them).

I made some warm wool socks for my son-in-law a couple of Christmas's ago and he loved them. Well when he got holes in the toes my daughter brought them back to me to fix. I just cut off the toe part and just reknit them. they lasted a year. Now they are back again ready to be fixed again. I think when I get time after Christmas, I should make him another pair.

I had inherited a darning egg from my grandma - I used it once just to try it. This was a good reminder! I do have at least one good pair of socks with a hole in the toe that I don't want to throw away(the hole is at the big toe - so I always try to put it on the other foot so it's not where it will get poked through and be annoying! :lol: ). I think I'll have to see if can find some darning yarn/thread and try it again. Does JoAnn's carry it?

I haven't seen regular old-fashioned darning thread in many years in any local stores. I even looked at the shops in the Amish area of Ohio, where I thought for sure I would find it, but none there. What I use is crocheting cotton that comes in a big softball sized roll. It is very cheap and wears very good. I looked at the links OkiePastor just posted, but those prices seem high to me! |
