My DH cuts strips for me and squares them up. For some reason, I can't seem to cut strips straight. I am working on my first log cabin queen size for my sister, and it's looking pretty darn good.

alikat110 07-21-2011 07:28 AM

He looks over my shoulder and grunts!!!

babyfireo4 07-21-2011 07:28 AM

Nope, not here :) The most I can nag him into is helping me hold it up for a pic when it's finished (if you notice on my posts 90% of the time they're laid on the floor!)
Congratz on having a quilty hubby!

merry 07-21-2011 07:31 AM

DH does most of cutting for me & makes great acrylic templates. After awhile he started complaining about my color choices, etc, so I challenged him to make his own blocks - he did & now i have another sewing buddy

rivka 07-21-2011 07:32 AM

My husband helps pick fabric, and he's made a small quilt of his own once, but that's it!

Maggiesmom 07-21-2011 07:40 AM

He likes to use the AccuGo and cut strips, hearts etc. He likes using the embroidery machine.

BellaBoo 07-21-2011 07:40 AM

Some DHs shop for fabric, sew blocks and share the sewing room. I'd give up quilting if my DH was that helpful. LOL. We have other interest we share and help each other when asked but I want him away from my quilting activities. He feels the same way about me not being involved in his guns.

DebraK 07-21-2011 07:40 AM

sometimes he gives me color advice, oh, and he pays for everything ;-)

Opal Jane 07-21-2011 07:42 AM

Yes...he is with me most times when I am fabric shopping; he holds the bolts and helps me select the fabrics. He's a keeper!!

NauDeeGal 07-21-2011 07:43 AM

My fiance will help wash/dry, iron, and layouts! He does do a lot of his own repairs/mending by hand. I have tried to get him to actually sew on a machine but he has not tried it yet. Although one day I heard something in the basement. When I went to see what the noise was he was practicing on the industrial machine he bought for me to see how it worked. He said that I should be carfeul with that machine as it sews about 40+mph. I laughed so hard, I cried.

Kuusistoquilter 07-21-2011 07:46 AM

My DH helps me with layouts. He has a better eye for patterns than I do. He mostly "allows" me to shop for fabric and patterns. Last time he was in AK. he bought to wall hanging patterns from me.

Same here! I'd go nuts if he was involved with my hobbies! And he does his marathons and plays soccer without my involvement.

loves_2_quilt 07-21-2011 08:10 AM

He helps me lay the blocks out and choose fabrics.

Mine too! Usually he'll also ask, "Who's that one for?" as he knows most of my quilts get given away.

He will help me, if I ask, with block layouts. I'll lay them out on the floor in the living room (between him and the TV) and he'll point out which ones need to be switched around.

Kehoeta 07-21-2011 09:07 AM

My DH helps by staying out of my way... Although he has been pretty good about helping me sandwich. I have to move all the dining room furniture out in order to use that nice big floor.

Jim's Gem 07-21-2011 09:21 AM

Mine will make suggestions, if I ask for them. He tells me how beautiful they are and holds them for me to take pictures. He has even surprised me and taken me to quilt shops when I did not expect it. But no sewing or cutting for him! Oh, and he helps me do all my sandwiching!!!! Sometimes, when I have had shoulder issues, he will do all the sandwiching!!!

emerald46 07-21-2011 09:23 AM

My DH pays my cc bills and always brags about my projects. He swears he is going to learn how to use a LA and quilt for me when he retires. sighhhhh

leatheflea 07-21-2011 09:26 AM

Heavens no! He helps me build tables and anything manly. However I do believe if he really wanted to he could make a beautiful quilt, but dont tell him I said so because I dont like sharing my toys...LOL

JanetM 07-21-2011 11:31 AM

Mine wouldn't ever attempt to cut my fabric, but he is very good at helping me to choose fabrics, and layouts. He even takes my to the LQS's to buy more fabric.

He also goes with me to Road2CA, and other sewing events. We get a hotel room, and make these little trips mini vacations. He has no trouble finding something to do while I am busy. He's a keeper

mmdquilts 07-21-2011 11:34 AM

DH cuts and ties for me and runs to the sewing machine to fix it when I start swearing!

Glassquilt 07-21-2011 11:45 AM

He remodeled my sewing room. He helps be with value.

TonnieLoree 07-21-2011 11:45 AM

No help from any of my former not so DH's. You go play with your toys and I will play with mine. :-)

mhansen6 07-21-2011 12:04 PM

Yes, he tells me what is wrong with them.

Mine is my enabler, but he doesn't participate in any cutting or sewing

Jim 07-21-2011 12:22 PM

I am the husband!!!...I make tops my wife runs the quilting machine...I do the bindings....we enable each other...it must work...we will be married 37 yrs on July 27th

cattailsquilts 07-21-2011 12:23 PM

Mine is absolutely an enabler! He's got a great eye for color and design, and has designed a couple of quilts that I just need to find time to make now. He is very helpful when I'm trying to find that one fabric I need to make the design work, especially when I'm trying to work solely from my stash.

Don't know if he'd try to make one, but I bet when I get a true LA (I have a 9" machine for now), he'll want to try it out. :)

Helovesme 07-21-2011 12:49 PM

Mine will make sure I have the best tools to work with (not that I know how to use all of them!) He is also a math whiz - everytime I'm stumped on measurements he comes to my rescue, and does it so very gently. He "feels" fabric with me and is my great encourager!

thequilterslink 07-21-2011 01:39 PM

Mine justs hands over the fabric money and ooohs and ahhhhhs, sometimes while actually looking at the quilt LOL
he is a keeper tho.

quiltsRfun 07-21-2011 02:54 PM

Helps with color selection.

MaryKatherine 07-22-2011 02:51 AM

I consider my husband's advise invaluable. He has a colour sense far better than mine. (haven't had my cataracts done yet.) And he visits me regularly in my "hiddie hole" to see if I need anything at the store etc.

Don't have a DH but the neighbour's 20 year old son used to volunteer to help me - and did a good job.Shame the family moved away.

Sherome 07-22-2011 03:25 AM

Ha Ha!! He would if I would let him. You should see the size of his hands and fingers.

NOPE ALL MINE CAN SAY WHY DO YOU CUT THAT MATERIAL UP AND THEN SEW IT BACK TOGETHER.I ASK HIM WHEN SOME ONE WANTS LUMBER DO YOU SELL THE A TREE OR MEASURED LUMBER.THAT IS THE ONLY WAY HE UNDERSTANDS ANYTHING I PUT IT IN LOGGERS TERMS

quiltymom 07-22-2011 04:06 AM

Before he passed away he would sit on the floor and help make different designs for my Salvation army quilts. Then he would say" What more!!!!!

laurafet 07-22-2011 04:48 AM

My DH doesn't help with cutting or sewing, but he is real good at choosing fabrics and helping me with the "as you go" decisions. That seems odd to me since he has absolutely no taste in clothing or appropriate dress for anything.

I like this response. Never thought of it that way...

michelehuston 07-22-2011 04:50 AM

Nope. Not at all. An occasional isn't that done yet...but that's it. I stopped asking what he thought when I got "it's fine." erggg

Cheri_J 07-22-2011 04:55 AM

My husband pays the bills and never complains about how much fabric I buy. He re-modeled my sewing room, hung shelves, put in a surround sound system, and made a 20-pound light box (ughhh) - but it works great - it's just really heavy. The only thing he ever asked for was a large rag quilt made of golf material - which I made for him and he loves it.

kathyd 07-22-2011 04:58 AM

My DH is an enabler. He took me to VT Quilt Festival this year when we went to visit daughter out east (we live in IL)! He is great at picking fabrics and has been known to lend an eye to others when in a quilt store. I'm definitely keeping him. We've been together for 31 years!
