Thanks for posting, I went to my FB account and diabled that option. Now none of my friends numbers are available to anyone but me. I don't have my on phone number listed in my profile. This is an easy fix so don't panic.

Got rid of my cell phone. Never go into Facebook. I would be one who can unknowingly get into trouble!

I'm sorry to tell you this, but I can't use my phone to Facebook, and all my friends numbers were there, which I quickly and completely deleted! Please check and do this for your friends. They will love you for it. The notice below will help you get rid of the problem, and you can copy and paste it to your Facebook to let your friends do the same.
************************************************** *******
ALL THE PHONE NUMBERS of your contacts are now on facebook! go to the top right of the screen, click on ACCOUNT, click on EDIT FRIENDS, left side of screen and click CONTACTS. you will see all phone numbers from your cell phone (FB friends or not) are published that you have stored in your mobile phone. TO REMOVE, go to the right column, click on "this page." please repost this on your status, so your friends can remove their numbers and thus prevent abuse if they do not want them published

rexie 08-12-2011 07:37 PM

I tried it but those were not any of my numbers in my phone.

cathyvv 08-12-2011 07:51 PM

I went to the site and read it. For your friends numbers to be on Facebook, either:

a) you uploaded them from your phone
b) your friends shared them to you

Allegedly, no one can see the numbers but you. I'm not a FB fanatic, so will have to check that, too.

I do agree that this bears watching - especially if you have kids who have Facebook accounts.

LisaR 08-12-2011 07:58 PM

that is scary stuff

I DON'T use FB on my phone. My phone doesn't have any fancy features and I had several phone numbers on my account!

Mumzbear 08-12-2011 09:31 PM

WOWZER! Scary! Thanks for the alert!

Gramof6 08-12-2011 09:36 PM

I have an old old phone and cannot access FB or anything from it. I just checked and yes....my friends phone numbers are listed on FB under my account as the original poster of this thread said. I was not too happy to see them either as some I had no idea of their phone numbers!!! THank You for bringing this to our attention! I really appreciate it.

Thanks,

How handy is that now I can easily find a friends phone number. FB only has or shares information that YOU supply them with. It only publishes things that YOU have given it permission to tell. Your friends have chosen to Share that information with their friends. How is that a violation? How is that scary? If you don't want 'your stuff' shown don't share it. By the way everything you post or share on QB can be searched for and found on GOOGLE.COM. If you are all concerned that someone you don't know may read or see your stuff you should probably get off the internet altogether.

Not everyone sees this opinion as being handy as you do.
Also a lot of people don't go searching to find out what options are available on sites and I feel this should be brought to everyone's attention.
This way if they choose not to have it posted they can remove it.
It is all personal preferences. We all see things differently, that's what makes the world an interesting place..

copied from Facebook:
"Only you can see your contacts
Your Contacts list is like a phonebook that only you can see. It includes numbers that 1) you may have synced from your phone or 2) your friends have chosen to share with you. To control who sees your contact information, visit your privacy settings."

You just have to make sure that you have disabled what feature you don't want shared.

I don't use facebook mobile and they still had some phone numbers. How the *%@# does that happen?

My BIL posted how to turn it off and took care of it yesterday.

if it only publishes the info that you give it permission to give, why are so many people so unhappy? apparently lots of people did not know that their privacy was being so invaded. they had to be supplied with an opt-out in order to regain what privacy they thought they had. the numbers were published without permission.

facebook has a long history of being very free with its members' information. yes, it's true that you tell it lots of this, but that does not give permission to print it publicly. when you joined this forum, you gave the board information that was not shared with the members here. if you want to share that information, you do it yourself. also, while it's true that you can look up a great deal about other people online, the fact is that you have to search it out. no one is handing it to you unasked. as far as this forum, google only repeats what is said on open, public posts, and you have to go looking. by reading the posts here, you'd be hard pressed to know my phone number, not that you couldn't look it up in the phone book, but no one here is publishing it.

facebook gets in trouble quite a lot for this reason and is why i dropped out after 2 months. it's also very easy to hack into, according to the new york times, which i trust more than facebook.

not to mention that it also often gets information screwed up when people have the same name. also both of my children ran photos of themselves (2 different last names) and both ended up labeled as people they never heard of.

my feeling is that people who want to talk to me can email or call. and vice versa. nobody needs to know the minutiae of my life.

butterflywing 08-13-2011 09:52 AM

btw, i just typed in my name, followed by the words phone number and my state. i got run around in circles by a bunch of people with the same name and i never found my phone numbers. many of the numbers i saw came from facebook. what a surprise. i do know where to find it, but unless you do, it's not that easy. so facebook supplies the number to it's own members and to the rest of the world as well. how sweet is that.

kacklebird 08-13-2011 11:03 AM

Wow, I'm going to FB now. Thanks for letting us know.

Charleen DiSante 08-13-2011 11:18 AM

Actually, I don't facebook with my phone and I saw all the numbers.

My point is that it's a social media forum. I.e. It shares information and your the person supplying the info. If you are concerned you should stay off those types of sites or only share what your willing for others to know about you. It used to be that you could call the phone company and get anybody's phone that was listed only those people who chose not to allow their information were unlisted. It's the same with any type of social media type site. You can share what you want or don't. For example I don't want people to know my age but I am ok with them knowing my birthday - who doesn't like to get a birthday wish from friends? Everything you put out on the internet has the potential to be made public. Including things posted here on QB. I have never seen personal info from here but have seen links to various post from here.

Facebook is only with with what you allow it to show. If your worried don't enter anything or change how much info they can give out they have privacy settings.

My point is YOUR friends have entered this information on their accounts not your cell phone. I have NEVER synched my phone with Facebook And wow all my friends phone numbers are there. But it wasn't Facebook secretly gathering information from my cell phone or going into my computer to gather it from my system. It was because my friends have entered that information on their profiles.

That's because your friends entered their phone numbers on their profiles so that their friends can see their phone numbers if they want. It has nothing to do with whether you used your phone to post on Facebook.

Needles 08-13-2011 07:15 PM

I don't FB by phone and all my friends number are there. What's the big deal, people have information posted on all of their pages, most only friends can see. And only you can see your private phone numbers of friends. I've been on FB close to two years now, never been hacked, don't click on weird posts (there are just some things my friends would never post) and I notify them that they have probably been hacked. Some URL's will take you straight to a nasty site or even worse a virus.

But the same thing could happen if you were just surfing on the web, or even on here if a troll or someone else posts a wrong URL

Most of the problems on FB come from playing games and all those other crazy things when you have to ALLOW. Don't allow, if that happens when I click on something, I cancel it. I don't send hearts and pokes and all that. I merely use it as a communication board, like this one, and a place to share photos with my long lost found family members and friends.

I also us the private message system for 'writing' to people. I love the phone list as when I travel, I always have them right here in my computer.

You can find anyone's number on the computer and FB has nothing to do with it, use one of the people searches, you can get addresses, phone numbers and google map them and you can travel right down their street an see their house.
It's the computer world, you are out there and in it, just try googling your name sometime. I guarantee, you will be very surprised at what pops up.

If you don't like it, you will have to take yourself back to no Internet. But that still doesn't mean the information isn't all out there, you just won't see it.

That is only the phone numbers of your friends who are on FB because they list it on their FB page. It is not the phone numbers of all your friends/business numbers on your cell phone.
