I didn't know I had a favorite breed till I owned a bichon frise. What a great breed they are! Unfortunately, we had to put ours down 7 weeks ago, but when we are ready for a new fur baby, I want another bichon!

Minnisewta 09-30-2011 04:59 AM

I have had 3 dogs, 2 were mutts and 1 Golden Retriever. I like big dogs better then the little breeds. I pretty much love whatever I have at the time. I have to say the Golden was pretty goofy and lovable and would love to have another one. At this time in my life I'm a cat person but that can always change.

I agree with the hair problem and would love to get a Golden Doodle but my husband can't get around the "poodle" part, he hates poodles,

I have 2 mutts right at the moment. One is a dalmation/boxer mix that we got from our vet. It was a stray that came to their office so I took her home and she's a wonderful dog. I also have a chow/golden mix who is the best dog in the world. He never does anything wrong. He's 14 now and I will miss him so badly when he's gone. But the best dog I ever had was a male Shih Tzu who was my best friend for almost 12 years before he died from complications of diabetes. If I didn't have the other 2 already, I'd get another one in a second. It's been a year and a half since Spike has been gone and I miss him every day. I always say that whatever dog(s) I have at the moment will be my last but something always happens to change my mind. A stray will wander or something or I miss having one and will wind up with more. I guess I'm just meant to have dogs.

I agree!

I love and work with dogs everyday....but my personal favorites are setters. I have three English. My daughter and I teach obedience and showmanship to 4-Hers, so we are blessed to be able to teach them how to train their dogs. A skill that we hope stays with them forever and that they pass along to others.

bodie358 09-30-2011 05:13 AM

In order: Boston Terrier, Wire Fox Terrier, Lab.

BUT, I love all dogs, including mixes.

Essiescott 09-30-2011 05:23 AM

Oh a subject dear to our hearts. We are a dog family. We currently have
Shadow, he is an 18 year old fawn chihuahua,
Spike, he is a 15 year old black and tan doxie,
Misty she is our 11 year old fawn chihuahua
Copper he is a sweetie he is a 10 year old red doxie
Pancho is a mixed breed--was supposed to be a chihuahua but he isn't
Can't have a pancho with out a Cisco, he is a double dapple black and white doxie--both of them are around 10 years of age.
Then I have my Rainy girl she is a very sweet gray chihuahua she is 9 years old.
Holly is our long hair black and tan double dapple doxie--she is 8 years old
Then we have Dutch---he is a steel colored no haired chihuahua he is also about 8.
Liberty she is a cute fawn colored pug she is 4 1/2 years old,
Stormy is also a pug, but black, and she is almost 4.
Dottie she is our white and black dapple doxie, she is a rescue dog she is also deaf she is about 3 1/2.
Then comes Justice he is the pug father and head of the pug protection agency. He is a super sized pug and is probably around 6 years of age---he is also a rescue dog.
After that comes our sweet Patriot, he is a Boston Terrier mix, he is the best lap dog anyone could ask for. We almost lost him, and he has my daughter wrapped around his little paw.
After Patriot, comes Freedom, she is a full Boston Terrier and is my husbands sweetie. then we saw this cutie patootie of a cocker spaniel, and just had to get him from the pound. He is a black and white parti cocker, his name is Oreo.

There you go, our hearts and home are full of pups we would not have it any other way. Yep they are all inside dogs, they get along with each other, don't make too many messes. Even keep quiet when we have guest in the home. We won't have any grandchildren, so we have granddoggies, and granddoggers.

Golden Retriever's. Their whole purpose in life is to please their owners! Our 10th is a British Cream Golden, pure white and the most affectionate one we've ever had...

Roberta 09-30-2011 05:27 AM

1. Borzoi
2. Irish Wolfhound
3. Scottish Deer-hound

Ladyjanedoe 09-30-2011 05:28 AM

I don't think you can measure a dog's intelligence soley on how long it takes to housebreak him. Our two year old pug took less than a week to train and and as much as we love him, he's no rocket scientist. The puppy took longer and the vet said that's totally normal.

We have pugs and adore their disposition. They are not annoyingly yappy like other small dogs and the males in our family aren't embarrassed to be seen with them in public.

We used to have a German shorthair pointer. She passed away from old age. She was a doll.

I guess I care more about disposition than breed.

glorcour 09-30-2011 05:31 AM

We love our bearded collie, and Bernie, our second, is the gentlest, most easy going dog we have ever owned. Our daughter's dogs have always been Newfoundlands and we have had them as frequent guests with our own dogs. So we kinda favour these big hairy ones I guess. Once we had a cockapoo, also hairy.

lorimax5859 09-30-2011 05:41 AM

What a great post and responses!!! Have loved all my dogs to the extreme - all have been rescued from one place or another.
Doberman (Delilah) passed away at 11yo.
Terrier (Charlie) passed away at 3yo.
Poodle (Dusty) passed away at 12yo.
Poodle (Annie) passed away at 16yo.
Currently have Patty, a 3yo Min Pin who is very smart and a clown! My Chihuahua Mandy (my Avitar) is 13 yo and not is great health but spends all her time sitting on my lap whenever I let her (and I let her all the time!)

barri1 09-30-2011 05:45 AM

I am partial to spaniels.. I've had a brittney, and cocker..My guy is part cocker, and poodle.. A cockapoo.. He doesn't shed, as the other two.. The other two had very mellow personalities, he doesn't.. He was the runt of the littler, and has a Napolian complex.. He's 17 lbs, and thinks he's a big guy.. I think because he was the runt, he has the attitude..

Tulip 09-30-2011 05:49 AM

We are a patchwork dog family. Every one of them is a favorite. Maggie/black lab 7 yrs, Sophie/yellow lab 3 yrs, Junebug( aka bug/buggy)boxer, approximately 3 yrs. old, she was a rescue out of a drug house, Tucker/ Saint Bernard 2.5 years, and finally Sam my birthday present, Rott pup (he and I are currently going to school (aka obedience classes). We have our vocabulary list on the fridge and study nightly!
My fondest memory is of Meriah (Ria), who passed away 3 years ago at the age of 15.5. She was a border collie cross that was the most awesome barn girl. She was the best when dealing with the cows, goats and kids. She'd herd like no other and always asked for a kiss by touching your chin and when you'd say thank you, she would give the softest butterfly lick ever. Miss her everyday...

Samoyeds! Friendly, don't have body odor. Love everyone, but strangers don't mess with them because they are medium to large. Smart, wonderful family dogs. Love kids - known as the dog with the smile.

I got my Boston because I couldn't afford A Frenchie. Thank goodness because I am for sure a Boston girl now. Smartest dog I have ever had and a real personality too. I love him.

Definitely doxies! We just love our "little rascals", Bogie, Doc, and Sassy (my avatar).

I love all dogs but like the larger breeds, not so much the smaller breeds because they tend to be yappy and I can't stand a yappy dog. I love and have loved my chows and pit bulls, shepherds, etc.

luvstoquilt 09-30-2011 06:40 AM

I had 2 Silky Terriers and adored them. They lived to be 16 years old. Both were rescued and we got them from "Silky Rescue"...if I were going to have a dog again I would go back there. For now, the Peach (cat) is enough.

Caswews 09-30-2011 06:50 AM

My favorite breed is a rescue !! but I love poodles & dauschunds ! they have a personality of their own ! Had both types of dogs (Poodles & dauschunds),my baby poodle thought he was a dauschund as the dauschund was 2 years old when we got the 8 week old poodle ! LOL had the traits of the dauschund rather than the poodle..

harley 09-30-2011 07:00 AM

Rottweilers ,I have 3

Normabeth 09-30-2011 07:16 AM

I have to agree that a Mutt is the best breed. I had one Cocker Spaniel that came with a lot of medical expenses. The mutts are usually healthly. Their are a lot of dog that need rescuing - that's where I get mine from. My current dog is named "Chance" - we gave him a second chance at life and we took a chance taking him, a pun on his name.
His size is intimidating, but he is just a big teddy bear.

MaggieLou 09-30-2011 07:43 AM

Right now I have a greyhound. I've had several over the years. They are loving and very laid back. I've also had Siberian Huskies, ShiTzu's and German Shepherds. They all had their good/bad qualities. I'm partial to rescues so we'll probably get another greyhound. Can't stand the thought of them being put down just because they can't run anymore. They have to retire them from the track at 5 years old.

donnahbm3 09-30-2011 07:43 AM

I think I am kind of a "love the breed you're with" kind o' girl. I have had a Boston Terrier, a Newfoundland, a lab, a shepherd, and a shepherd/husky mix, bassett hounds, and aside from the Newfoundland, they were all great dogs. The Newf had some breeding issues and as a result had some agression issues. He had to be put down after trying to remove my mother's and my faces. But, that being said, I would not hesitate to get another Newf from a reputable breeder.

QuiltnLady1 09-30-2011 08:16 AM

I simply love dogs -- have had one on and off as long as I can remember. The first I remember was a springer that appeared in my lap at breakfast om my first day of kindergarden. He was followed closely by a stray -- a cocker who wandered into our yard pregnant and stayed. Then Dad was sent from Texas to Alaska and we gave our dogs to a loving home and wound up with a malamute pup and then a full grown malamute. The pup was hit by a car and while we loved the adult, he stayed in Alaska when we left -- I think he was my favorite since he went everywhere with me.

Since then I have had a real variety of dogs -- both papered and not and they were all loves. We just put our girl down (that's her in my avatar) -- she was was a handful and all love. It gets harder to say goodbye as we get older. We may look for a new one soon -- we had talked about getting an adult shelter dog, but a friend just got a chocolate lab pup that was hard to give back to her when we left.

I like most animals, 1st dog poodle loved me hated my husband, Second mutt mix Great dog, third cocker poo, great dog so lovable, 4th Westie Great dog, 5th Westie, and my last dog is Peke who is so sweet. This is over 40 years I've had these dogs and each one had their own personallity and I loved them all. See I also worked in a pet shop selling dogs and I explain evrything before selling a dog. I even let them read on the breed they we're thinking of buying,. They were all like my own dogs and it was a wonderful job for a true animal lover.

Victoria L 09-30-2011 08:20 AM

I have has many different breeds - german shepherd, poodle, beagle, chihuahua, mutt and border collie. I was at the shelter looking for another border collie (mine was so smart) and saw a shih tzu....and fell in love. I had to wait to 2 days before adopting her since she was new and there is a waiting peroid for families to find their lost pets. Her family claimed her and I was heart broken, but found Penny - my avatar. I would adopt another in a minute. You receive so much love from them and they are not yippy at all. She is my baby :)

valsma 09-30-2011 08:37 AM

I've heard a couple of you mention your heart dog, and if by that you mean the dog that stole a big part of your heart, that would be my Valentine.
She was my black and red mini doxi. I got her when she was just over two weeks old because she was the runt and her momma pushed her away. I fed her and raised her. She would cuddle with me, sleep in the bed with us. If we went somewhere we would put her in a back pack (before those fancy dog carriers) and take her. She would just ride around not making a peep, peeking out occasionally. She had a rough time health wise, she was attacked by a basset hound, lost the use of one eye, had a bout of breast cancer, suffered epileptic seziurs, plus other health issues. When she died at 10 years old part of my heart went with her, even now I think of her and get emotional. up. I miss her so much. She was my little sweetie. As much as I love my dogs, she is the only one I have been that attached to emotionally. I think that is because I had been through so much with her.
That is also where I got my name, Valsma.

Not always true, I have a mixed breed (Collie/German Shepard) she has had to have two knee surgerys, went blind at 8 and has artritis. She is the exception to the rule.

I love cocker spaniels, but when I lost my mama dog, I can't bring myself to own another one. I also have a weakness for bull dogs, but my husband said if I ever got one he would feed it hormel chili everynight. I think I just love all dogs.

Learner747 09-30-2011 08:58 AM

We rescued a poodle who is nearly blind and was very sick when we got him. He has convinced us that poodles are by far the best. He does not get fleas or ticks because of his thick hair. When wet he does not smell badly. And he is super smart. The vet said we may not have him much longer because of a liver disease. So we treasure every minute with him. If we get another dog it will be a poodle. :-P

Dixie1954 09-30-2011 09:04 AM

I love my Yorkie. She is my faithful companion

I think the best dog I ever had was a mix. He had a little of this, and a little of that, with a dash of something and he was the sweetest pooch. Boots never had health problems until he reached old age, 14. I've had pure breeds, Peks, Shit Tsu, Basset, and Labs over the years and they all seemed to have quarks and health issues. I prefer a mix. Right now I have a Pek, she is a gift from my son. That's Katy in the avatar and she is quarky (maybe she takes after her owner).

Stitchit123 09-30-2011 09:22 AM

At present I have a Min-Pin (Clem) and a Manchester Terrier ( Midnight-aka My Shadow) they are both smart- sweet and lovable. I usually prefer Hienz 57's I had a mixed Chow-Rot-Pit-Blk Lab ( Greta) came in at 165 lb of lap dog. She was so good with kids and very much the MaMa. But I'll take in any needing a loving home

wolph33 09-30-2011 09:55 AM

mutts are my fave-even better from a shelter

I absolutely love Bassets. Have had several and miss them terribly. We have a mutt and a Morkie (part Yorkie and part Maltese).

KLO 09-30-2011 10:04 AM

Currently have a Blue Heeler mix and she is a sweetheart but a bit shy and doesn't like crowds. We've had two Cockers and two other mutts/found dogs, one a border collie mix and the other ... well, who the heck knowx. We are looking to get another rescue/mix dog but I am looking for a calmer dog who might help Cheyenne be calmer around crowds. So, yep, mutts mostly for me.

wraez 09-30-2011 10:21 AM

We used to have German Shepherds but I prefer a smaller lap dog now that I am retired. Because I have a grandson with dog and cat allergies, I'm trying to find a hypoallergenic dog, maybe a Bichon, something not too hyper.

Can't say that I have a fave, tho my favorite pet as a child was a cocker spaniel who was my constant companion.

Normacharlie 09-30-2011 10:36 AM

It's devastating when another animal kills one of your babies, had that happen to me back in May (14 yr old cat). Then he tried to put the blame on me.

I had a half mini-poodle, half whatever, that looked like a long haired chi. give up on spelling, he was by far the best little dog I have ever owned and I've had several since then.
Think the two I have now may be my last, that's up to God, I seem to get found alot!
