We had a nice day for Christmas, very busy with grandkids ages 2 and 4. We got the 4-year-old a Baby Alive doll that "eats" bananas and talks (and she got a doll quilt!). The doll was a big hit, but after a while GD came to me with the baby, bowl and spoon and said, "Here, you be the mommy." I said I was not the mommy, just the grandma. She was the mommy. She said, "No, YOU be the mommy!" I said, "No, I am the grandma. YOU are the mommy. You have to always be responsible for your choices." The entire family erupted in laughter. I said, well, it's never too early to lay the groundwork.

Another good moment was surprisingly poignant. Our son bought an engagement ring and is popping the question New Year's Eve. (She was with her family out of state today.) I give my son an ornament every year, ususally something totally ridiculous. This year I gave him two overlapped silver hearts. I didn't know if he'd like it. He was so touched when he opened it, and it hit him like a ton of bricks that next Christmas he'd be having his own tree in his own home with his wife. He got a bit teary. I said yes, when I take down the tree this year, his ornaments and stocking will be packed to take with him. Next year he can hang his awful sparkly Los Vegas Elvis ornament on his own tree!

Did you have any good holiday laughs?

My granddaughter has a picture of her dad (actulaly stepdad, but don't let him here that term) on her cell phone that will make good blackmail material. He needed to work outside for a few minutes and rather than dig a coat out of the truck, he grabbed one of mine - my smallest, of course. Picture a six foot muscular man in a size 12 coat with a fitted waist. I need her to email me a copy of that one.

When my children are together, the laughs are many. They (we) are a bunch of smart mouths to put it mildly.

What a great picture! What color was the coat?

Our funniest Christmas moment happened while wrapping gifts on Christmas Eve afyernoon. I was exhausted from last minute shopping and obligations, tired from no sleep the night before, just generally grumpy. My 13 y/o son is in the next room playing videogames and makes some comment about me being "Grinchy", so my DH pipes up with "I don't care too much for all this Grinch stuff but I sure wouldn't mind if she was a little Ho-Ho-Ho every once in a while!". I busted out laughing - my son was shocked and amused , and I think DH may have embarrassed himself just a tiny bit when he realized our 13 y/o got the joke. The outcome was great though because it sure did lighten the mood and we spent the rest of the afternoon joking around, having a great time! Merry Christmas!!

After we'd been sampling the Xmas wine this made us crack up.
My 5yr old DGS got a toy garbage truck that talks and makes rude noises from the back. My SIL, a computer/electrical smarty, somehow rigged it to be louder than the factory setting.
My DGS loved it and of course kept making it repeat itself (pun intended).
So after dinner we adults are in the living room talking while all the kids sat on the floor playing and we heard yet another 'noise'. We assumed it was the toy truck until the other kids pointed to the 11mos old.

My brother said that while at Nana's my nephew opened a toy requiring Double D batteries. Nana was not impressed when nephew asked her if she had Double D's.

Priceless!

hannajo 12-26-2010 04:47 AM

Well, my 19-month-old nephew was the entertainment from Christmas Eve through Christmas night. He repeats everything that's said, in his cute sqeaky voice. I've never laughed for 24 hours straight before.

We got DD one of those dolls several years ago. A few major hints:

1. Make sure that you don't "feed" her too much at one time and stand her up for awhile before changing her diaper.

2. Don't ever tilt her while there's no diaper on just to make sure she's done.

3. Make sure you follow feeding with a couple bottles of water and make sure that the water runs clear. That food, if not all out will 'set up' in her digestive tract and bugs love it. (that hint came from a friend that had gotten her daughter one the year before so we lucked out and it never happened here)

jbud2 12-26-2010 09:42 AM

My 3 year old GD loves to move the Nativity figures around. She knows she has to be careful with them because one set is very old. In that set, Baby Jesus lays naked in the manger. She thought he was cold so tore up a tissue to make him a blanket. The other set, she places each piece on a step and then moves them to the manger. I was listening to her one day: Mary just had Baby Jesus and she had to take a nap. After her nap, there was a Big Wedding. Mary married one of the Wisemen, and Joseph married a shepherd. I had to tell our pastor our GD's story because that Sunday, he said in the sermon that not much is mentioned of Joseph after the Nativity story in the Bible, but our granddaughter knew what was happening. Please, no offense to anyone. Just a child's version of the story!

ALL these stories are wonderful!!!! Thanks for sharing!

No, my hubby and I shared Christmas colds with each other but we laughed about it because we've spent many of our 25 years apart since he was a Marine! It was a great day!

Up North 12-26-2010 10:58 AM

I am trying to hold back the laughter as my Grandaughter age 9 is telling me about her dolls their names and ages going to Teachers Conferences sending a third grader back to preschool because she backtalks! She is so serious and funny!

We just had a little funny thing happen. I ordered a pair of winter boots for my DH online, size 11 med. When they came in the mail, they were perfect...except they were a little boy's size 11 med. We had a good laugh. DH said, " I thought that box looked kinda small:-)

My "kids" 47 and 49, grandkids, 22 and 26 went to the hill after we had eaten our Christmas meal, with 4 sleds and had a ball sliding down. Picture my son, weighing "well over" 200 lbs. sliding down on the sled I got when I was 9 or 10 years old. All of them were well past ideal weight, and they were on these small sleds. My daughter caught the action on her camera, even some of their laughter and screams. They even made a bonfire from wood laying on the ground and kept warm. When they finally came in, they were still laughing. When they woke up yesterday morning, they were feeling the effects of their day of fun -- sore muscles mostly from laughing so hard. Dad and I just stayed in the house. He's recuperating from a 4-wheeler accident he had in October and I have "arthur"itis and my bones hurt and I didn't need anything else to happen to me. This is a Christmas they will always remember.

peaceandjoy 12-27-2010 06:38 AM

These stories are great! Kids - from toddlers to adult version - definitely added some humor to Christmas.

My 4 year old niece came to our house for a while on Christmas Eve. As she LOVES to snatch everyone's camera, we got her a Fisher Price one of her own. Watching her take pictures with it is hysterical. Of over 1,000 she's taken, very few have actually turned out, but the entertainment value makes it worth it. She doesn't even try to focus it most of the time, just snaps, snaps, snaps. I'm taking a picture of the wall! I'm taking a picture of the sink! I'm taking a picture of the cow's tails! (my brother is a farmer) Everything, including the kitchen sink, is fair game for having a picture taken.

Psychomomquilter 12-27-2010 07:02 AM

I wrapped my gift so well, it looked so nice! my son's girlfriend opened the present, and a used cleenex right on top! oh my!, we both got a kick out of it, but so embarrising. with me having a cold and all, I just didn't see the kleenex go in the present!

oh and by the way the "other present" she really did like.

The story about the doll reminded me of a Christmas long ago when my sister and I were young. I got an 18 inch doll to sew for and she got a Dydee doll, as they were called then. She had such fun giving the doll a bottle of water and changing the diaper, then our father put a little mustard in the diaper and when she changed it, she started to cry and howled, she's not supposed to do that.

My 3year old son has just worn himself out over the past week. After Christmas dinner, I served cheesecake for dessert. He started throwing a fit and saying it was yucky and he didn't like it. I've been trying to teach him to be polite and just take a bite of everything served him, then he doesn't have to finish it. He wouldn't do it so finally I put a bite in his mouth at which point (of course) he says "oh, it's great, I love it". To which I responded,
"Oh no, you don't like it so you don't need any more, that one bite was all you needed." He was quite happy to eat his cheesecake after that ;)

Great stories! Kids as so funny! My youngest granddaughter (age 4) was a little upset with her Mom the other day. She stands nose to nose with her and puts her little hands on each side of her Moms face and with more than a little attitude; says to her " You go to your room and think about what you won't let me do!"

My grandkids are older now, but I remember well how the Wise Men in the Nativity Scene used to be accompanied by Power Rangers.

Ilovemydogs 12-27-2010 09:11 AM

Cute stories! Our 2 dogs have their stockings and we usually get a rope chewie and rawhide chewies and they get so excited when the stockings come down and they get their chewies. They love to play with the wrapping paper. :-)

My son, son-in-law and daughter came home arguing about something, anyway when they walked in the kitchen sink backed up, had to get a plumber, and the dog killed a rat or mouse outside took the head off and dropped it in my husband's hands. I turned to him and he said as he was dropping the headless animal in the garbage,"Not sure if this is a Currier and Ives moment."

On Christmas morning, I went to put cat food in the cat's bowl and found that our oldest cat, Mozart, (3rd cat on the right on avatar) decided to leave a present for his siblings.

Great Stories! They made my laugh. My avatar, Chloe, kept jumping into my DSIL's lap on Christmas day and settling down for a quick nap. I keep telling her she is a Cat person, but she does no believe me.

My funny thing this Christmas: I told everyone all I wanted was a digital camera, nothing too fancy, because I did not have one. I keep using my Dad's to take to quilt shows, to take pictures to post on this site, etc. He kept telling my all this year: "You need to get your own camera!" I don't know why, I wasn't breaking his. Anyway, I did get a nice camera for Christmas. Now I have to learn how to use it! And I also have to make some quilts to take pictures of!

On Christmas Eve we were at our daughter's house. She and her husband had just got a new Wii and our great granddaughter (3) was showing us how she could play tennis. I looked at the controllers and there was one red and one black. I asked "why do you have a red and a black controller?" My son-in-law (all serious) said "Because they are two different colors." Every body (but him) laughed and laughed. We were still laughing the next day!!!

GGquilts 12-27-2010 06:22 PM

When my DH unwrapped one of his presents I said " don't get excited it isn't much," and when he opened the box it was empty. I was wrapping and had his present in a box and decided I didn't like the box it was in and got another box, but forgot to transfer the present. We got a big laugh and he isn't about to let me forget it.

We had dinner at my sisters and she had the table all set with real china Christmas plates and silverware on a beautiful Christmasy red linen tablecloth. When we were all about finished eating she handed someone a Sharpie marker and said to sign the tablecloth, put the date, and pass it on. When it got to my dad who is 88 years old, he signed it "Paw ate here 2010." I'm glad he still has his sense of humor.

My husband has CP and is in a wheelchair, but every Christmas he dresses up as Santa (that's him in my avatar) for pictures with his great-nephews, ages 1 1/2 and 3. This year GN age 3 was watching a program about Santa living at the North Pole, and he turned to his grandmother and said,"My Santa lives in Beaumont, Texas!" DH must use the city special transport bus for travel. On Christmas Eve, the same GN was told by his mom that they should put out food for Santas reindeer. His response: "Santa doesn't have reindeer. He rides a bus.
Of course, DH is tickled pink and telling everyone he knows about it.

I had a plate in one hand and a glass in the other, was going to sit down for Christmas dinner. I only had on my favorite pair of wool socks on my feet. My sock caught on the heat register cover, so I sort of got off balance and the metal thing was flung across the room. My SIL's dog was following me and fell into the heat vent. Luckily no one was hurt and I did not spill a drop! There was pandemonium for a few minutes, though. :D :D :D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D
