Hold down the alt key and type 155 and you will get the ¢ sign.

thus 59¢ can be typed after typing 59 by holding the ALT key and typing 0162 on the numeric keypad and then releasing the ALT key.

I always use the 'other symbols' function in the word processing program and am not really sure that we ever had the symbol on our keyboards - although I can stand corrected on that.
