I just received a dog that was going to be put to sleep because he is deaf. He is ten weeks old and a Boston Terrier.
I would like to have you help me name him. He will be a husky fellow when grown and don't want a sissy name. Any suggestions???? If anyone has ever worked with a deaf dog I could use some advice. I ordered a book called "living with a deaf dog" so I hope it will help. ( I lost by browser while typing so I hope this doesn't post twice)

How about Keller...a distant relative of Helen Keller.

Charlee 07-09-2011 04:38 AM

Bless your heart for taking this baby and the challenge that will go with him! Bostons can be a handfull when they can hear, this one will just take extra lovin'! :)

Samson...Sam for short! :)

How about Max because you will get the maximum amount of love for the minimum amount of effort. My dog lost her hearing about 2 years of age. Not quite the same situation as yours but she and I manage very well. Everything is done by signs and signals. She will be 9 next month and has always been a very happy well adjusted dog and a very loving companion. I wouldn't change her for the world.

Good for you!! And that baby is a cutie, no matter what you choose to name him. You might want to try this book: HEAR HEAR! - A GUIDE TO TRAINING A DEAF DOG - I found it on http://www.dogwise.com/ and you can preview some of the book there.

He is a cutie for sure! My sister's Boston is named RugRat and called Ruggie for short. Guess what he started chewing on as soon as she brought him home..lol. I like the name Max!

gypsyquilter 07-09-2011 04:56 AM

I'd name him Signal, he's awesome and glad he has a good home.

Sometimes it is good to be cautious about choosing a name - it can be self fulfilling.

MissM 07-09-2011 05:15 AM

How about Augustus

My furbaby is named Poco Diablo. Luckily he isn't a little devil! He does let us know when teen-aged boys come into the house, but other than that he is a little angel.

Dee G 07-09-2011 05:26 AM

He is precious and looks just like the Pokey Little Puppy! How blessed he is to have you. How about Challenger for a name as he will be a challenge for sure but will be so worth it.

jmabby 07-09-2011 05:26 AM

To me he looks like "Timeout" for lots of lovin

nance-ell 07-09-2011 05:28 AM

I'm a little partial to the name Max, because I have a lab mix named Max, but I loved the suggestion of Keller... very unique and appropriate! Great suggestions Opal Jane!

As for being deaf, I don't know anything about training an already deaf dog, but I do know that dogs aren't guided by sight and sound nearly as much as by smell. I had a Cocker Spaniel who was deaf and blind by the age of six and no one who entered my home believed me. All went well so long as I didn't rearrange the furniture! Your pup will probably stay close to you and may even demand extra attention just to be sure you are noticing him, but he'll give you showers upon showers of unconditional love.

Thanks for saving such a precious boy.... My Max was a rescue too. :-)

kpluce 07-09-2011 05:33 AM

A first glance I thought of Buster. I have three adopted dogs from shelters-two are beagles and one is a beagle/jack russell mix.

valsma 07-09-2011 05:36 AM

How about Brutus. It seems approriate for a dog that is going to be a husky fella.

GirlieWhirlie 07-09-2011 05:38 AM

I'd call him Lazarus. He wasn't raised from the dead but close to it. You could nickname him Lazzy.

pjaco 07-09-2011 05:41 AM

Buster Brown. Do you remember Buster Brown Shoes?

SueDor 07-09-2011 05:43 AM

I love all of the suggestions above. Just wanted to say he is a cutie and I am so glad you gave him a home. Hey, how about Homer?

pjaco 07-09-2011 05:43 AM

Qbee 07-09-2011 05:44 AM

How about "Bear" cause he looks like he's gonna be a big ole Teddy Bear :)

mhollifiel 07-09-2011 05:47 AM

I vote for Bruiser! My DH says give him a Chinese name (where'd he get that?) or call him "Same to You" I guess if you say that fast, it sound Chinese! He's adorable and he will help you, better than any book, learn to deal with his disability. Keep him safe and he will do the same for you!

"Bruiser" is the first name that popped into my head, too!

topper1 07-09-2011 06:03 AM

love the face, i have white boxer which some are deaf but mine isnt, i rescued her Bailey her name. have little dog jodie her name, yorkie mix
love wins not matter what.......................

Vivian Ketron 07-09-2011 06:04 AM

I like Brutus also. Keller would be a good choice too.

sandpat 07-09-2011 06:07 AM

I love some of the suggestions here...I'd give it a few days though, they usually will tell you their name! Sometimes it takes just a little while (although Keller- Kell for short) is a great name!)

Ellen 07-09-2011 06:28 AM

How about Boss, short for Boston. I hate it that he can't hear you when you call him tho. He sure is a cutie.

Doreen 07-09-2011 06:34 AM

He is soooo sweet looking. Brutus or Keller are great names.

alikat110 07-09-2011 06:46 AM

Butch!

sixfootroad 07-09-2011 07:01 AM

How about "Browser" as he will aways be searching for something new to get into. I had Boston Terriers most of my young life and they never lacked for curiosity. The deafness will be more of a problem for you than for him.

Stitchit123 07-09-2011 07:12 AM

I always wait to see what their personality is before naming critters My little Clem named him self after weeks of trying he finally responded to Clem

I can't do that cause he will be responding to hand signals. So far he has been layed back and sleeps a lot but I'm sure that's cause he is so young and still a stranger to our household. I really don't think it matters to much as to what his name will be because he won't hear it anyway. It's just to have a reference to him as an individual dog.

OKLAHOMA PEACH 07-09-2011 07:30 AM

He is adorable! You will come up with a name after you get to know him better. I named one of my boxers Buster and eventually shortened it to Bu, and his temperment changed to being sweeter. I think the way I said Buster was harsh sounding to him. Of course your baby can't hear but he will be able to feel vibrations. Give him lots of hugs and rubs!

thimblebug6000 07-09-2011 07:56 AM

He's so cute! My niece rescued a deaf dalmation, and she had many years of unconditional love from her. We always had to remember not to startle her, coming to the front of her before giving her a pat, etc.

auntmag 07-09-2011 08:32 AM

This is also my suggestion.

He sure is adorable! I know you'll give him a good home and he'll reward you with lots of love. How about Henry? Or Scout?

Amythyst02 07-09-2011 08:39 AM

Take a few days to get to know him before you name him, because sometimes you find the name you picked just does not suit the puppy. I named our puppy right away, Missy and then changed it a few days later, because she reminded me of a little bear, so I named her Sugarbear.

God Bless you for taking in this little pup, I am sure he will be a handful but will bring you so much love.

Ramona Byrd 07-09-2011 08:47 AM

I had one half a lifetime ago, he was deaf but it took me a week or two to realize it. Danny Boy watched me so closely it spooked me at first, then it became his way of life. He knew when it was time for the kids to come home from school, sat in front of the window watching for them. and would not let other dogs or strangers near "his" kids. When he had to go to the Rainbow Bridge all the family mourned his loss.
Since he was a rescue, found near a busy highway, we never knew his history but he'd been well taken care of before. This was before microchips.

I like this name. It is perfect. He is just adorable. Please try to find a book about hand signals. I had a cat that I used hand signals with. She died of a heart attack before going deaf.

I love the name Keller (sort of sounds like Killer, lol). I used to have a schnauser that knew several signs. I could "command" her from across a field. I taught her the same signs as ASL
