When a hacker sends emails to people in your email address book as though they came from you, it's called spoofing.

I don't know how it works, but I don't think it means they have the address book info. I think they just stuck a worm or virus somewhere to use the info.

Can you try going to http://www.hotmail.com and using the Forgot My Password link right under the Password box on the login screen? Then the real Hotmail should ask you a security question and be able to reset your password.

You may need to set up another email address for them to reply to you at.

been there, done that. the hacker has changed the security question to one that i don't know the answer to. he's also made me 24 years old and a teacher. i live in idaho. you can't change your password with the secret answer and you can't change the question without the password. catch 22.

This is awful...and I for one am sick of this kind of stuff, but I'm even sicker that there seems to be nothing to do that can truly stop it...and only the victims ever suffer or lose anything...but someone will make money defending the hacker. So sorry that you're having to deal with this, butterflywing, but thanks for keeping us updated.

somehow i squeaked through the cracks and got in for now. i don't know how without a password. but i don't know how long it will last. i'm going to empty everything and start a new account.

Usually those accounts only allow one user at a time to be logged in. So if he is logged out right now, that may be why you were able to sneak back in :wink:
Hotmail, yahoo and other free mail accounts are not the most secure... you may be better off with your email account with your ISP. They would also be able to help you better if God forbid, something like this ever happened again.

BW at least the potatoes are good there, I hear! Hope you get it sorted soon - good idea to go with your provider. Mine is with ours. But don't stock your address book online, only on your computer.

I also use my provider for my e-mail. Sometimes it gets stuck somehow and they don't send it, and I have to call, but at least I have a # I can call. Hope you get it straightened out :-D :-D
