I dropped out of sewing at school but when my DS was about 4 and went to a childcare centre for an afternoon a week, I went and did a quilting sampler class - he is now 31 so I guess I have been hooked / obsessed / passionate about quilting from when I was around 28 years old. I am now 56.

Learned sewing in 6th grad Home Ec., age 10; started quilting last year, age 63. But saved my scraps all those years, sure they would be useful in a quilt one day! Now if I could just find them....
I started two years ago at age 57. The only other sewing I did before that was a hem on a curtain. To say that the terminology is challenging is an understatement!
started sewing when I was in high school (home economics - remember that?) Just started quilting last year so I was still in my fifties. Started quilting cuz' someone told me I didn't have the sewing and artistic talent to do it.
I learned to sew back in H.S. I did not start sewing again untill about 10 yrs ago, when I made curtains for the whole house, baby blanket, diaper bag without any patterns.
A few years later we moved. Went to a John Wayne museum and fell in love with a puff quilt that was on one of the beds. I decided I was going to make one. My avitar. I been hooked since. BTW I will be 57 in Dec |
Started sewing at 7. Quilted several quilts at 20 as a newly married. Then life got in the way and I have just started to quilt again and finding that there are so many new tools out there it is mind boggling. Yes, I am from the older generation.

I was nearly 42
I sort of started at age 17, but just failed. Tried again at age 28, failed.
I finally took a class at about age 34. After I completed that quilt, I've kept on quilting. :-) |
I began sewing about age 10 and quilting at 65--a year and a half ago. Love the quilting by hand but also love the sewing part of quilting. The cutting drives me wild some days even with my Accuquilt system because I want to sew and quilt--not cut.

I learned to be a seamstress in my teens as a profession, well one of them lol. The quilting I started at the age of 50,I think (so that's 21 years next month). It came very easy to me as it is just sewing. The only thing I really had to learn was to use the quilting tools and I was off to quiltland.
I love to make mindless (as I call them)scrap quilts. Using just scraps most of the time or yard goods. When I learned to sew, there were no patterns. A customer would pick a design out of a catalog, I would measure them and make the dress. I don't think there is a quilt pattern out there that I cannot figure out, and that comes from years of figuring out a design to cut and sew and fit. I am so grateful that I had this opportunity, at a young age, to learn this very exciting craft. |
I made my first baby quilt at 20. I have been sewing since I was d13
I started sewing in HS, but started quilting at 47.
I started sewing as a teenager; but didn't start quilting until I was 75. I have been quilting for almost a year and love quilting. Wish I had started sooner.
I made clothes and did hand work with my grandmother since about 5-6. We did a quilt together in the 50's. She passed and I lost interest in fabric. Started again when my BFF turned me to the 'dark side' as she puts it. about a year ago
I was 56.
I was 32 when I taught myself to quilt. Lots of trial and error. I'm getting better at it 17 years down the road!

I used to sew years ago and then hadn't done anything for years. I always wanted to learn to quilt and decided I would teach myself....that was last year at the age of 63.
Made my first quilt (QS Hole in the Barn Door) through a LQS class in 1997 (age 33); had fussy cutting; sashing; triangle pieces -- way too much to take on as a first endeavor!!! In 2000 tried again with comfort quilts for pediatric unit - birther method. Didn't branch out beyond those until 2 years ago (age 45).
I started sewing in middle school (13?) but started quilting @ 41.

I was about 6 or 7 when I started helping my grandmother tie quilts. Gram made lots of what she called scrap quilts for the family (8 of us kids at the time) and aunty's family (8 cousins). Lots of quilts to tie. Had to be square knots or do over. I didn't get into making my own quilts until I was 28 and I have never stopped since.
I started at 68 -- never too old to learn something new

Sixty (60) years young. :-D

My Mom taught me to sew when I was just a kid, making doll clothes, then my own clothes. I remember making a peach colored tent dress for my grade 7 graduation. Oh my! I made my first quilt all by hand for my first baby when he was born in 1989. I was 35, and it's been a love affair ever since.
I was in my 30's/40's. So long ago that I forgot!
Quilter68 who is now 70 |
Started sewing at age 5 or 6. Started quilting at 16. I'm 28 now.

I was 29, but didn't become a dedicated quilter until age 69. I'm so crazy about quilting now I'd spend every minute in my sewing room if I could. Just finished a quilt for my great niece who turns one year old today and I did it without a pattern, just picked out fabric, fussy cut and made blocks. Added teddy bear sashing and backed it with Paddington Bear. The quilting is a meandering stitch and did swirls in the blocks. All in all I'm very pleased with how it turned out. I'm still struggling with binding. Practice, practice and some day I'll get those mitered corners perfect. So I sure got off the subject didn't I? I wish I'd started quilting seriously years ago, but I'm sure having a ball now.
I started quilting in 1963 and have been doing it ever since.
