i was 7 yrs old when i sewed my first quilt to teach me how to use sewing machine. when my mother passed on to heaven 23 yrs later, it was found in a hope chest, then i got to quilt it. 29 yrs after quilted i still have it. so i quess that it is 52 yrs old. i guess that makes it and me semi antique.

Me too for I started about 60. Later writing about my grandmother I discovered she quilted all the time but since she died before I was born and my mother didn't tell me I never knew. Needless to say my mother did NOT quilt or do any craft work.

wildyard 09-21-2011 02:45 PM

Well I am not a seasoned quilter, but I am seasoned. LOL I started quilting just over a year ago at age 63.

Gosh, I've been sewing and quilting a long time. My darling husband bought me a sewing machine in 1977. I've been going ever since. Last year he bought me a new machine. What a wonderful guy!

I started sewing on my moms featherweight when I was 7 or 8. But didn't start quilting until age 50 when I lost my job and finaly had time.

CMARAS1234 09-21-2011 05:32 PM

14 ,LEARNED FROM MY GRANDMA.

IrishNY 09-21-2011 05:34 PM

29.

madamekelly 09-21-2011 05:56 PM

I started sewing at 14, and did not start trying to make quilts until after I had a stroke. It was great therapy to relearn to use my hands effectively. Every quilt I make is a celebration of my survival.

sgardner 09-21-2011 06:02 PM

I was like 25? In college with 3 kids, pregnant with my 4th and made my first quilt for my daughter over spring break! but quilting in earnest didn't happen until about 5 years ago.

I was sewing as a kid, mainly to make my hand-me-down pants fit properly and other such clothing modifications. Bell bottom pants were most of what we could find at the thrift store, so I would convert them into tapered legs.

Jim's Gem 09-21-2011 06:05 PM

I was 39 when I made my first quilt. That was 12 years ago.

Dolphyngyrl 09-21-2011 06:13 PM

13 but didn't start really doing it till my twenties, so maybe for 10 years now off and on

Izy 09-21-2011 06:15 PM

I was 46. I was introduced to quilting while I was living in Spain in 2006, been obsessed ever since! :-D

MisDixie 09-21-2011 06:25 PM

Started my first quilt at 9...finnished at 11. My Grandmother quilted it. Ouilt was made from 6 inch blocks of what we called crimpoline (fortrell) patchs left over from those pant suits my Mom and her freinds made back in the 60's. LOL that top will last forever. The batting and the backing are in rough shape, but I still feel happy when I look at it.

Murphy1 09-21-2011 07:31 PM

Way back in the late 60's I hand sewed the blocks for a Grandmother's flower garden. I didn't know what to do with them, so I put them in a gold paper cardboard box. No idea what happened to the box. Then marriage, teaching, children took my time. I sewed clothes and costumes, but no quilting. Then I retired in 06 and my son said he and his wife were going to have a baby. I decided to make a baby quilt. I looked on the internet and made one, put it together and found out later that binding was put on last. Then I learned about rag quilts and made a dozen of those until I broke my arm. Later, I thought to myself, I bet they have new tech in sewing machines, so I bought a Janome, took some classes and then began classes in quilting. Sooo I guess I really started to quilt in 2009. Now I find myself totally dreaming and creating quilts in my sleep. I love that the blogs I read are by younguns and my guild is a variety of ages. I am 65 and have found a new passion in life after teaching for 35 years.

The summer I turned 9, I was attacked by a dog and had stitches in my face. The doctor warned I should not be outside until the stitches healed. My mother had the great idea that I could sew while cooped up inside. I made a doll quilt for myself. My grandmother always quilted so I made Barbie quilts by quilting scraps with paper towels inside for batting. Our church had a quilting bee and at about 12, I began quilting a "real" quilt. That was almost 40 years ago!

mariebaker 09-21-2011 08:00 PM

1981-I made a baby quilt for my daughter. I was 31 years old.

donnalynett 09-21-2011 08:40 PM

Katrine 09-22-2011 06:45 AM

Sewing since childhood but only took up quilting end 2004, aged 54. Just as well, would not have had time in my working life, but being retired I can sew all day with a clear conscience!

1227Granny 09-22-2011 10:12 AM
