As an old dog learning new tricks I am just curious at what age you seasoned quilters started and how long have you been doing this?

auntpiggylpn 09-20-2011 04:54 AM

I started sewing between 6 & 7 and started quilting about 12 I think, hard to remember exactly that far back!

May in Jersey 09-20-2011 04:55 AM

May 1999 is when I attended a week long Elderhouse quilt class, so that means I was 63 years old.

ptquilts 09-20-2011 04:57 AM

I started sewing (clothes) at age 13 or so, made by first tied quilt in HS. Didn't really start in earnest until I me my future DH. And the rest is history.

I started about 15 years ago in high school - I started my daughter and one of her friends this summer on their 1st quilts at age 6.

My grandma taught me to knit and sew when I was 6yrs old! I only took up quilting when my first grandchild came along in 1995! I was 53!! It all started with a Beatrix Potter cot panel!!! I have been addicted ever since!!

Started sewing about age 10 I think. Made my first "crimpaline" quilt at 18? That is what they called the knit polyester fabric here at that time. Yes, it is still going strong approx. 35 years later!

sparkys_mom 09-20-2011 05:15 AM

I made my first quilt in a class at a LQS in October 2008. I was 69.

Years ago, I used to make some clothing but I was never an enthusiast. I had to purchase a new machine to take the class as my old Singer was pretty much defunct. Probably someone on the QB purchased it for a song at the Salvation Army. :)

loves_2_quilt 09-20-2011 05:21 AM

I was 48 when I started quilting. I had sewn garments/crafts for many years before I started. I watched Eleanor Burns, Kaye Wood, and Georgia Bonesteel for years before I started.

NDQuilts 09-20-2011 05:31 AM

I started in college about 10 years ago.

Beachbaby12 09-20-2011 05:38 AM

I will be 62 tomorrow - can't believe it! I started about 10 years or so ago on my own. I did take one workshop and attended many quilt shows. I have learned many other types of needlework: embroidery, crocheting, knitting, needlepoint, cross stitch. Quilting has been quite a challenge to me. My favorite is hand quilting my Grandmother's flower garden. Piecing for machine quilting has been harder but fun.

I am a PRC quilter. ( PRC=pre-rotary-cutter). I can still remember when the rotary cutter was first introduced .... WOW did it ever change things in a hurry.

Great-great granny 09-20-2011 06:01 AM

54 - WOW that was 23 years ago - where did the time go :(

gollytwo 09-20-2011 06:04 AM

I started in the mid 1970s - so I was 39 or 40

Hurricane 09-20-2011 06:07 AM

I started in 1995. I was 43 and I took a hand quilting evening class at my local high school. It was so much fun and I never stopped quilting. Learned a lot along the way.

started sewing at 4 first quilt at 20

Quilter7x 09-20-2011 06:30 AM

Believe it or not, I didn't start quilting until after I was 30! Every time I saw something quilted before then, I always thought it was for "old people" and "grandmas" to do, not for ME! I had been sewing since I was around 10 or maybe even younger. I started out making Barbie doll clothes and then got into making clothes for myself, something I need to do more of today.

I have no idea what clicked in me after I turned 30, but I remember seeing something quilted and liked it. My intro to quilting was a night class at the high school 20 years ago. The rest is history!

janedee 09-20-2011 06:42 AM

I have always done a bit of sewing, clothes and things since my teens, then knitting and tapestry - didn't discover the delights of quilting until 10 years ago at 47

Mickey1 09-20-2011 07:12 AM

52......9 years ago!

leatheflea 09-20-2011 07:27 AM

I made my first block when I was 14. I hated quilting and swore I'd never try that again. Then in my 20's I made a couple of nine patch wall hangings from scraps to match the curtains and chair covers in my living room and kitchen. Didnt really start making full size quilts until I was in my mid 30's, And my first was scrappy crazy kinda quilt, from all the fabric I had used over the years for various projects. The ugliest quilt you've ever seen!

clarinet87 09-20-2011 07:36 AM

At 23, about three or four months ago!!!

mama lyn 09-20-2011 07:39 AM

My great grandmother helped me piece a 9 patch when I was 11 or 12

oma66 09-20-2011 07:43 AM

I began sewing in school in Home Ec class and continued sewing always - making almost all my girls clothes, my clothes, even men's shirts and pants. Loved it. I discovered quilting in 1982 - well, I suppose I can hardly call it quilting as I embroidered some squares and put them together with sashing and made it without binding. I made a few more quilts in the 90's and really got into quilting in 2008 and have been quilting ever since. I was 66. Now just a few weeks from turning 69 I find myself even dreaming about quilt patterns and color ideas, etc. LOL. Just like loves_to_quilt I watched the TV quilters for years before quilting myself. Have ALWAYS admired quilts and those who created such beautiful art pieces and finally decided to try it myself and love it. This board is such an inspiration that one can not help but want to do more and more in this fabric art.

feffertim 09-20-2011 07:50 AM

I was 69 when I started. Had never used a sewing machine until a friend dragged me protesting loudly to a quilting class . Well needless to say I was hooked

Sheila_H 09-20-2011 08:00 AM

47 I started last year when I was off on disability I learned to sew when I was about 10 my grandmother taught me. I always loved the quilts and a nurse I worked with was a master at quilting she showed me some of the work she did and I promised myself one day when I had time I'd learn. I've been taking classes since then and love it!

catrancher 09-20-2011 08:10 AM

2008, when I was 54 years young. I'm even younger now!

MrsM 09-20-2011 08:30 AM

I think I was 39?

purrfectquilts 09-20-2011 08:34 AM

Age 7, using scraps from a box of my grandmother's clothes in the attic and a treadle machine in the barn, sitting on a hay bale. Tied quilts at first, using old blankets as the filler.

Aully 09-20-2011 08:36 AM

I got my first sewing machine when I was 11, I sewed crafts and clothes then, I started quilting when I was 22 which is 2 years ago, I also got a new machine 2 years ago.

blueangel 09-20-2011 08:57 AM

I started in my 40's.

bloomin'Iris 09-21-2011 03:13 AM

Just started, real soon to be 55....sigh

tmg 09-21-2011 03:17 AM

I started sewing at 23. When I worked at a commercial drapery shop. Made some dresses for my girls when they were small.

Started quilting when I was 37 after my oldest daughter could not find anything she liked for bedding for her new bedroom. That was 2 years ago. I have made 10 quilts in those 2 years.

june6995 09-21-2011 03:39 AM

I have sewn since 1950 but did not make a quilt until after 2000. That would have made me about 66 years old.

I always thought it was something old ladies did. Now I know what I was missing. A ma making up for lost time!

June in Cincinnati

hobo2000 09-21-2011 03:41 AM

G'ma taught me to sew, emb., and crochet starting when I was 4. Had to wait till I had long enough legs for the treadle. Designed and sewed my clothes for years. Made suits for husband and sons, etc. I started quilting in'88. So around age 50.
