Funny you mentioned wringer washer, that would be my desire too; as it brings back many memories of doing laundry with my Grammie. She even collected rain water and skimmed off the bugs lol. Her clothes were wonderful too!

We have one of those just 4 miles from our home and we go there all the time. Guess that is the advantage of living in a small rural New England town.

I wish appliances were made to last like they used to. The Cold-Spot refrigerater worked great for 35 years before it gave up and died.

DancingShoes 10-18-2011 04:27 PM

I couldn't agree with you more!

I didn't mind the extra work, clothes were cleaner, less water waist and nothing beat clean sheets and towels hanging on the line!! :-D

Sidewalks

front porches

rotory phones that I can actually hear something on besides static and no answering machines.

Smaller community schools where kids can walk to on the sidewalks we should have.

I miss Blue laws when everythhing is closed on weekends; We did survive!

My DH says the one thing he misses is youth. HA

I miss hearing trains.

Now I'm depressed. Okay. I'm over that!

KerryK 10-18-2011 05:17 PM

Ditto EVERYTHING listed above!

BellaBoo 10-18-2011 05:28 PM

The only thing I remember I wish for now is everyone having was a big front porch with lots of chairs and a big porch swing. The wringer washer? I remember my mother and grandmother doing laundry with one. It was hard work and took all day. Nope, don't want ever to go back to backbreaking housework with no modern appliances.

To go shopping and find only things make in America.

Greenheron 10-18-2011 06:32 PM

Passenger trains/trolleys/bus lines--all kinds of reliable mass transit extending coast-to-coast, to cities large and small and out into rural areas.

jaciqltznok 10-18-2011 07:13 PM

BLUE LAWS....I would love for Sundays to be Sundays and Holidays to be time spent with family and not for shopping!

less of everything to make people appreciate what they have more!

Oh my, I was thinking the same thing before I read that was your choice!! Mom and I had an assembly approach and it was fun working together. I liked the smell of the clothes cleaning in the soapy water. I remember mom was tired tho so maybe it's good to not have to stand so much while the washing machine washes. That wringer was an education in mechanical theory.

We had a wood radio that stood two feet high on the floor, mahogany with smooth ridges and a glass face that was maroon. By putting your finger in thumb holes you would dial your station. On Sunday mornings we got the Italian hour fron Utica with lovely foreign songs about romance and friendship. My friend was a radio repair man but could not find the tubes to fix it so it is now just a pretty piece to look at. Wish I could hear it again.

I would like TV comedies to actually be funny instead of insulting and snarky. And we wonder why there is so much cyber bullying in schools these days; they learn if from TV!

YESSSSSS - FOR SURE

before 9 after 9, really doesn't matter. Im tired of seeing condom commercials. So much so I don't even watch TV anymore.

I agree-before 9 after 9, adults could clean up their acts as well. I hate the commercials where kids are sarcastic and mock their fathers(or each other, siblings, friends).

I won't buy a product if the person in the commercial is pulling a fast one one someone, like the kid who takes the food and runs off. Who thinks that is cute or nice? Don't buy the item and maybe they will realize that is an opportunity to model good, polite behavior, not rude, bad behavior.

Swinging and picking and eating cherries with my cousin is a lovely memory I treasure. And riding in Dad's model t ford truck, red of course with a crank and the sides of the motor cover folded up left to right.

Funny how people think they can only afford a boy and a girl now, but then people afforded 13 children.

We had weekly delivery of milk, bread, spring water, vegetables, eggs, coal and home selling of pjs woolen undies, aprons and such. A horse drawn box wagon delivered the bread and pastries and we loved that horse. A German couple had a bakery with items made there and the smell of the bake goods and stmosphere of seeing the goods in wood framed glass cases with the old cash register, wow! Our city was great til they wanted a mall and tore down the shops. Now we can't compete with the big malls and the quaint shops are gone. It would have been charming and drawn people to our city but the lame brains wouldn't listen and tore the city away. We had one store with a grand central double wide stairs and walk way around the four walls one level above the lower sales floor. Glamorous!

LESS CHANNELS SO WE ALL COULD WATCH THE SAME GOOD CLEAN MOVIES AND EAT POPCORN ALL TOGETHER LIKE WE DID AT MAMAWS AND PAPAWS HOUSE.WE ALL WOULD GATHER AROUND THE TV WITH A METAL DISHPAN FULL OF OLD FASHION POPCORN.

Forgive me for this....but I would love it if we went back to all immigrants desiring to learn English and wanting to become an American....I get really tired of not being understood by someone who lives here but chooses not to speak English....and the feeling that at 52 I have to learn a new language in order to communicate with most checkers at the grocery store.

I miss the simplicity of yesterday. Being able to walk to the store amd school, knowing all your neighbors, parents who disciplined their children and children who listened. We had less in material things but more of things that really matter. A lot of the younger generation today have no respect for themselves or anyone else.

Suzi 10-19-2011 04:09 AM

If we could magically transport ourselves back to the early/mid 50's this question would be moot. Wasn't life so much simpler then? Simpler and so much more enjoyable - we even had Presidents who cared about the people (will THAT ever happen again?). Weren't we fortunate to have shared that wonderful time???

that is not my experience. The externals change but human nature does not.

I'm with you. The 50's were special. A warm, happy time.

mummadee 10-19-2011 04:37 AM

We still have that at some stations in NJ, at least at mine, but all pump gas. And they want to do away with that????Can't fathom why. I always fill up before I head out of state.

FayZ 10-19-2011 04:54 AM

I don't miss outdoor toilets. I do miss listening to the night sounds before falling asleep. Now I hear all the electric stuff.

Yooper32 10-19-2011 04:57 AM

The freedom we had in our childhood, to play at the other end of the block with all the kids in the block together at one place or another and we were safe. Nobody worried because we were gone for hours playing hide and seek and Eenie Einey Over and Statue and May I?. Our parents didn't worry about us as there were no threats to children in those days.

pheasantduster 10-19-2011 05:00 AM

My husband misses all the wildlife (pheasants, quail, many species of song birds) he was able to see when he was younger. He could walk for at least three miles before he came to another house. Today all new streets and mega houses with no one around.
In the late 1940's and early 50's my sisters and I would do errands for our neighbor to the local stores and she would give us a dime! She always said, "Let's see how long it takes you and if you fall down don't wait to get up'! so silly!

mummadee 10-19-2011 05:06 AM

I'd go back to the 50's. Kids were kids, allowed to roam free. We could walk the streets. People knew you and watched out for you. People had time to enjoy life and each other.
