Well, nothing like a little disruption in your life. I had been feeling "breathless"-like I'd run a marathon and couldn't catch my breath-just walking around the block and it kept getting worse over a several weeks until I barely made it to the top of my driveway. Well, decided, with much persuasion from my family, to get it checked out-went to emergency and they put me in straight away-turns out I have many blood clots in both lungs! Now, since this is the second time with this (first time 4 1/2 years ago after a 13 hour flight), I am now on Warfarin for life. Don't know what caused this again, unless it started in May on the flight back from Vanuatu, and I continued to clot since then. They have run several different blood tests (results not yet in) to find the cause of it this time. The doctor said this is the second time I cheated death and I must be one strong lady-I said I guess I still have many quilts to make and am meant to be here to make them!!! LOL. Since I have no energy and can't exercise for a while until the clots in the lungs disolve, I just have to spend my time quilting (and getting back on the board!)

Wow, how scary.. keep an eye on things and get lots of rest/quilting :)

Vanuatu Jill 08-03-2011 11:24 AM

Thanks! I admit, since returning from Vanuatu in May, I have had a hard job getting my mind back into quilting, but now, maybe I can get motivated again! In about 9 years, this is really the first time I have had this "quilters block". and I have a hand-quilted quilt 3/4 done just sitting there ready to pick up and work on!

belmer 08-03-2011 11:30 AM

So sorry to here this happened to you... Just take it easy for a couple days and maybe you might start feeling like working on some quilting projects. Hope things go OK for you. Will keep you in my prayers.

lovingmama 08-03-2011 11:44 AM

WOW!! I am so happy that you cheated this again!
I hope that the cause is found soon, and in the mean time take it easy and hopefully you will find inspiration here to get you back into a quilting mode :D:D:D

Vanuatu Jill 08-03-2011 12:02 PM

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it!!

jljack 08-03-2011 12:05 PM

Take care!! My mom has trouble with clotting and is on warfarin, too. Not something you want to mess around with at all. Glad you are OK, and welcome back!!

BTW, we have boxers, also!! Aren't they the greatest dogs!!!

Yes-being on Warfarin is serious stuff, needing to constantly monitor your blood and watch what you eat and drink-guess my days of putting down a FEW margaritas are gone-but at least I can have ONE on occasion. I will really miss eating mangos and liver, though-the two foods they say to completely stay away from!
I was raised with a boxer and have always been partial to them--GREAT dogs!

Celeste 08-03-2011 12:19 PM

How scary! I'm glad you have family who love you enough to keep "persuading" you to go to the hospital!

P.S. How is your GFG coming along?

Well, I made 30 flowers while in Vanuatu, came back and haven't touched it. DH brought it to me in the hospital in the little snap-together organizer I had it all nt, but I had taken out the needles before, so couldn't use it. Actually, I told him not to bother bringing them to me as I was really not able to focus-I had a book and hardly read-I just vegitated, mostly. I will re-stock it again for my trip back to Vanuatu on October 2nd. I think that will just be my portable project on the go. I need to start with the white hexagons and navy diamonds to connect the flowers-I don't have a clue how many I need, nor how many flowers I need. Guess I will just keep adding until I think it is big enough! Thanks for asking!

patski 08-03-2011 12:36 PM

I'm so glad you are on the mend. Don't delay going to the dr, you never know what is or is not serious

wolfkitty 08-03-2011 12:49 PM

Praying that you will be better soon, and able to keep it away! Hoping that you will be feeling up to quilting soon! I hate being sick, with lots of projects, but no energy to do them! Been there, done that, as they say. Get well soon, and good luck on your GFG! I love those!

Has your doctor released you to fly? My friend was not able to fly for 6 months after her episode, and it was a year until she could fly from San Diego to England.

Mom went thru this last winter...not funny...
There are a few veggies that you need to stay away from, too...dble check. She is not on the Warfarin, because she has a Lupus factor in her blood and that drug doesn't work with it.
She has been having to give herself shots of a very pricey drug...can't remember the name for the life of me...sorry.

lfw045 08-03-2011 03:29 PM

They have a new drug that takes the place of Warfarin which is really rat poison. My mother was on it and they tried to put my dad on it after a mild heart attack and he refused! Warfarin made my uncle bleed to death finally. It is a dangerous drug. My dad was put on Plavix instead over 6 years ago and he's been fine. I hope you do fine and heal quicky but please ask them about alternatives to warfarin.

tAKE CARE AND ILL PRAY FOR YOU

Sheila_H 08-03-2011 03:52 PM

Wow someone is definitely watching over you my dear, its very hard for people to find out they even have blood clots without a battery of tests. Thankfully they stayed in the lungs which was able to give you warning signs, but they could have easily moved to the heart or the brain. I know being on Warfarin or Heparin isn't the most pleasant thing to have to do but its better than the chance of having another round with them.

It's important for all to know when your on very long airplane rides - whether or not your in business or economy class you need to get up and move around the cabin. You need to help keep the blood flowing through the body or you run a risk of developing blood clots. There are numerous medical studies that have proven that the risk of getting blood clots during or after a flight is dramatically increased.

countrycottage 08-03-2011 03:53 PM

Will keep you in our prayers.

dkaz 08-03-2011 03:55 PM

There is a new anti-clotting drug called pradaxa that does not require all the monitoring like coumadin does. The shots were probably lovenox and they are very pricey.
Those on blood thinners need to be very cautious about bumps and bruises, etc.
Good health to all!
Debbie
