I am so undecided...I love the feel of the tiles, but the look of the wood...I found a place that has ceramic tiles that look like wooden planks..buy OY.....I could add on a dining room for that price...

what do you all have/like/want/prefer???

anyone do stained concrete???

QuiltnNan 10-15-2011 05:41 PM

i prefer hardwood, but had to settle for laminate :(

meemersmom 10-15-2011 05:42 PM

Personal opinion...wood has a much warmer look and feel. And, is much more forgiving if you should drop something on it, such as a plate. Things shatter quicker on tile. And, remember tile has grout, and that is difficult to keep clean in a kitchen. Cleaning/maintaining a wood floor is much easier to me.

I have marble, tile floors in the kitchen and think tile is great. We had wood in our last house and we had to rip them all out when our tenant dropped a pan from the oven and left burn marks all over them:< And they got water damaged too. So, each product has its pluses and minuses. You'll have to figure out what is most important. You can also get radiant heat under the tiles. Very expensive, but sooo comfy.

star619 10-15-2011 05:47 PM

Had both & love the wood!

Maride 10-15-2011 05:52 PM

I had wood floors at my house and didn't noticed a small drop underneath the fridge. Is slowly rot the wood under the fridge and even further. Tiles get my vote.

patski 10-15-2011 05:59 PM

we have all tile, had laminate but our wonderful cat knocked down a coffee pot! all that moisture ruined the floor. So now we stick with tile

I have ceramic in kitchen and bath, the rest of the first floor is hardwood. Attic room carpet. I like the tile in the kitchen and bath. The hardwood is nice also but it needs to be refinished and I'm dreading that. The grout is not much a problem, I did not put white grout in it is off white in the bath and sand in the kitchen. Once dried I coated it with polyerthene. Very happy with our choices.
Any suggestions on having the hardwood refinished?

Charlee 10-15-2011 06:00 PM

I have laminate...and would Never recommend it in a kitchen...or at all, really.

If I had a choice, I'd go for tiles...

Susanna10 10-15-2011 06:00 PM

I have ceramic tiles and I hate them. They are cracked where we drop things on them and dirty looking grout. Never again!!!!!

hensandhollyhocks 10-15-2011 06:01 PM

We have tile in the kitchen and I really dislike it. Can't seem to keep it clean enough no matter what I try. It is durable though. We have the laminate squares that look like tile in the "man room" and it seems indestructable, and is very easy to clean. However, my brother has a basement play room with stained concrete, and it is the most amazing floor ever! Just views from my lifestyle.

GAgal 10-15-2011 06:01 PM

I have had hardwoods for 20 years and absolutely LOVE them!

grammiepamie 10-15-2011 06:01 PM

We have 16 inch ceramic tiles in the kitchen and foray (front door to livingroom) Laminate flooring in the livingroom and hall and all 3 bedrooms are carpet. I had all carpet before the flood. I wouldn't change the way I have it now. I love it. Both bathrooms are ceramic tile.

athomenow 10-15-2011 06:03 PM

I have tile upgraded from vinyl.

marymc 10-15-2011 06:05 PM

We had hardwood in the kitchen at our last house and I loved it. Yes it got scratches and dents but still looked beautiful when we sold after 13 years and 4 children. Everyone commented on it and thought it looked wonderful, very warm and homey.
Completely remodeled the kitchen in this house and went with tile. Absolutely love it! We were able to put the heat coils under it so it's nice and warm in the winter. Yes it has no give if you drop something but also no scratches or dents in the floor. No worries about water damage from the dihwasher or spills.
The rest of the house is all hardwood (except the bathrooms). No carpet which is great since I have really bad allergies.
So, I am no help what so ever!

Glassquilt 10-15-2011 06:06 PM

Vinyl flooring that looks like wood.

Why? I have laminate floors (they were here when we bought the place) and we love them. So easy to clean and after 4 years we can't see any wear even with 3 dogs tearing around on them.

morelcabin 10-15-2011 06:10 PM

Don't go ceramic, go porcelin, you'll never have a cracked tile again. DH and I tried to cut a hole for the dishwasher hose through it and it was almost impossible. We worked for a while to get a crack going so we could chisel a hole. I would have never guessed...Porcelin is a little more expensive but comes on sale.

seamstome 10-15-2011 06:16 PM

Tile is very hard on your feet and back. I would not use it anywhere I need to stand for any period of time.

Pam S 10-15-2011 06:17 PM

I love the hardwood in my kitchen. It looks warm and homey. Any dents (from dropping cans and things) just give it character. And in my opinion, mopping the wood is a lot easier than trying to keep grout lines clean.

sandraa 10-15-2011 06:17 PM

I have the ceramic that looks like wood and love it. Always shines and so easy to take care of.

I have not seen these...but we are very limited on what is available in this rural town...will make a note to search though...

my next thought is marble..I had that in Italy and LOVED it...or Terrazo...

might also ad my kitchen is very small, barely 10' sq and it is stark white...with blue tinted walls and a yellow counter top..(that also might be changed) and a yellow sink! my colors are blue/white/yellow..go figure..hehehe

purplemem 10-15-2011 06:36 PM

I love your kitchen, just the right size.

I had tile and hated it. I would get leg cramps from the cold tile going through my house shoes and standing on it to cook. Also was slick in the humidity...
Can't tell you how many times I fell on my rear.

I like the wood laminate because I mop mine every day. My dogs drip and drop on the floors and I clean with disinfectant everyday. The laminate looks great and it gets a beating here.

irishrose 10-15-2011 06:40 PM

Have you looked at Allure? It's a DIY plank flooring - probably a vinyl that comes in wood grains or tile patterns. It's so much more forgiving with bad feet and a bad back. Warmer, too. Lumber Liquidators has it at good prices if the shipping wouldn't eat up the savings. How far is your nearest Home Depot?

Highmtn 10-15-2011 06:44 PM

I have a lot of porcelain tile in my home... and I can tell you this... IT'S DURABLE.

ANYTHING glass thing you accidentally drop onto the tile (or falls out of the fridge that's glass) will break about 99% of the time unless you can buffer it's impact with your FOOT. I'm glad I went with medium color grout, but I wish I would have gone DARKER NOW.

I regret not going with a good grade vinyl. I went with tile because I am a dog lover and when they track mud in.. or get to tearing around the house the tile handles it well.

I have seen some VINYL that looks every bit as good as my tile. I won't put tile in again. I got the tile on sale, but even then it was expensive.

Just my two bits worth.

(CORRECTION**.. I wrote laminate when I mean vinyl!!). Yes...we have had other friends who had their entire laminate floor ruined by a leaking faucet while they were gone for a weekend. They REGRET putting it in due to it's inability handle any water.

I've had two times that the connection for the icemaker leaked...and twice we had to change out the floor...and you can't mop it...or at least not this stuff...the seams swell...and ruins the floor...not being able to wet mop is NOT a good thing in my kitchen...

Highmtn 10-15-2011 07:12 PM

Purplemem...
OH YES.. LEG CRAMPS - FOOT FATIGUE!! By the time I was done cooking a big meal OR doing a lot of baking (like for the holidays) my feet and legs were killing me. We were contemplating buying professional grade kitchen mats when I accidentally discovered that wearing good ol' RUBBER FLIP FLOPS when working in the kitchen made all the difference in the world. We don't have your humidity, but boy howdy do I relate to your leg cramp comment. I'm chunky, but my husband is not and he was also getting leg cramps if he helped me for very long.

TRY IT!

House had laminate in the kitchen when we bought it, love it, even with all the "farm" stuff looks good. Redid our main bathroom and wanted something that I wouldn't slip and fall. Bought slate, used dark grout, replaced the counter with tile and dark grout. Is wonderful. Formerly had tile with light grout, never again. The cement is durable and now they can do wonderful patterns and stuff. Had smooth colored cement in our older SW home, slippery and showed every step we took. Would love hardwood in living room and bedrooms but not around water or heavy "farm" traffic :D Your kitchen is adorable, you can find blue slate and it isn't that expensive. Cleans easily too.

Teddybear Lady 10-15-2011 07:15 PM

We have tile in the kitchen and bathroom and laminate in the rest of the house. Took up all the old carpet when we remodeled with laminate. Both of us have less sinus problems now. I would never put laminate anywhere close to water.

Reminds me of my kitchen except I have sunflower curtains and tablecloth. I painted my cabinets glossy white and added the stainless steel handles. My tile has a mixture of blue, white, and beige in it. Very light. My walls are painted ..."Glad Yellow". That was the name of the color I picked. haha We changed out an old yellow formica counter top for a pretty marbled blue. It's very uplifting to me to be in the kitchen now.

Highmtn 10-15-2011 07:22 PM

Yes... I forgot to mention.... your kitchen is adorable! So vintage and quaint looking!

Murphy 10-15-2011 07:26 PM

I have split pavers in my kitchen.

Willa 10-15-2011 07:40 PM

I grew up in a house with oak floors (the inch wide ones) which lasted my parents 50 years and 5 kids and the floors are still there and look awesome. They were cool year around. I now have tile - it also is cool in summer but cold in winter and very hard. If I had my choice - real hard wood oak everywhere except bathroom.

Crqltr 10-15-2011 08:00 PM

Tile is cold in the winter and hard to keep clean.

CoyoteQuilts 10-15-2011 08:14 PM

Do the wood. Ceramic will break even the hardiest Corelleware :).... Also ceramic will bend the tip of your scissors if they land on the very tip.....

cindyw 10-15-2011 08:47 PM

I'm not reading all the responses so I may be repeating but get the wood. I picked tile and when I'm in my kitchen for awhile it kills my back. I replaced laminate over 70 yr old wood floors and didn't know it would be so different or I would have gone with wood.

Sheila_H 10-15-2011 09:19 PM

We've got nice stained hardwood floors throughout the main living areas - LR, Kitchen and DR and office. Then in our bathrooms we have ceramic tiles they are so simple to clean up and carpets in just the bedrooms, which I will probably take out and put down more hardwood floor.

Ellen 10-15-2011 09:26 PM

I have terazzo (concrete)throughout and love it for the ease of care. It is hard on the back and legs if spring housecleaning or cooking a big meal but I just get a new pair of flip flops and get-r-done.
I grew up with oak floors and dearly love them. If I ever cover this terazzo, it will be with oak.
I love the look of the stained concrete. Saw a log cabin out at Travis Lake near Austin and it was just gorgeous. They use chemicals not dyes, which surprised me.

Sandee 10-15-2011 09:27 PM

Have laminate thru most of house.
