I live in the woods and have cell service on the deck out back or in the driveway. In the winter in Michigan, it sure is cold out there...so we are keeping that land line. Also we tend to lose power here often and the land line is the only phone that works then.

How do you get your internet? We were told we have to have the land line to get the internet or we would have gotten rid of it too.

Only if you have "dial up" service do you need the land line. Our internet comes from a cable company that has underground cables all over the county. So internet and TV and phone (if we desired) could come from the same digital cable...but again, when cable is out so is your phone if you choose to go that route. For us, cell phones do not work in the woods where we live, so I keep my land line for emergencies and we use it often.

We just got rid of our land line, cable T.V. and Internet! Got a new Iphone, put our old land line # on new phone, kept old cell phone as backup. We can run up to 5 computers (works anywhere we have Iphone overage!) off the Iphone using a media package (think it is called "tethering!) Pretty cool and saving us abt $35.00 per month.

We have both, but mainly use our land line. It is bundled in with AT&T's U-verse package. We have unlimited nationwide calling, lots of features, no dead zones or dropped calls and don't have to worry if the electricity goes out (I also keep an older corded phone on standby for power outages). DH has a cell phone through work and mine has prepaid minutes that we can use if needed, but we will keep the land line.

check w/your security system; some of them can use your cell phones; don't know how it works but it does

I'm really considering it. No one ever calls it and I used to keep it up for my fax machine that I rarely use anyhow but I had so much problems w/my phone lines the cable company had to give me a modem to run my lines over the internet. I have unlimited everything w/my cell so it's not like I could ever go over my minutes.

My kids are cell only. They got me a TracPhone (Walmart)when I fell and broke my wrist. Insisted that I have a cell. I don't have long distance service - a Sprint card and my cell work for that. Only my kids know my cell #. I work on the phone. As I see it the majority of the population does not have a land line. Mine still works for me.

I think it would be really interesting if everyone who has posted here, edited their reply to include their age. I'm betting that those of us who still have land lines are the old fogies. I'm 58.

quote:high winds, tornadoes, etc all effect the cell service..and the power...no electricity, NO cell phone once it dies...so yep..keeping the land line no matter!
