You can't trust the unemployment rate they publish. The rate is influenced by how many people drop off the unemployment roster because, out of desperation, they took a part-time job. It's all games when it comes to such statistics.

There's another ongoing thread on this Board about "who else is in my position?" type of thing as to who else is in tough shape. I am SO tempted to copy parts of it and send it to my State reps as example of the real world and umemployment. People on this Board tell it like it really is!

A suggestion or two - get an e-mail address exclusively for job hunting, try to make sense of all the contradictory advice about resume writing, and set up specific alerts on the job sites.

One part time office job I interviewed for last week had 300 applicants. The ad was up for 24 hours! You don't list your state or region, but here in Florida, we are hurting! The only reason our unemployment rate is not higher is because folks are fleeing the state.

That is how it is here in Michigan as well. Fortunatly I am not one of those unemployed though.

I hope you find a new job that makes you happy quickly.

I am so sorry Denise! I can't even imagine how you feel....I know you are strong enough to get through this tough day!

I am sending big hugs and hopes that a "this closed door will lead to an open door" that will be just as satisfying to you.
Leaving a job you are so attached to is very hard. I retired almost two years ago from a job I absolutely loved and still miss some parts of it. (we were moving.....DH was already retired...you get the picture) Life is always changing and it is always a challenge to adapt.....

Wishing you lots of good luck in the future

Sorry for your job loss. I am so glad I am retired and not in the ranks of the unemployed! Are you looking for work? Good luck.

Sorry to hear about your job loss. I agree with those who say it's NOT a female thing. Many men who lose their jobs go through a grieving period as well. Your self-identity is wrapped up in your job to a great extent.

BUT time off is wonderful, too. So although you will of course job hunt, take time every day for doing things you've always wanted to do.

Just a thought - after 13 years, you must be very good at what you do. Could you apply for a position at the agency taking over the work for your old company?

Shemjo 01-29-2010 10:21 AM

I am sorry that today is your last day with this position. Consider this an opportunity to explore other avenues. I know that doesn't sound positive, but I have been there and my life is better now than it was then.

It is emotional enough when you retire because you want to. So much haarder when you are "pushed" out. You are in my thoughts and prayers. It is horrible here in Wisconsin, too. 2 of my sons have been looking for full time work for months. Both are barely scrapping by on part time (with a little help from us). Politicians don't have a clue what it is like to live in the real world!!

Denise xoxoxoxoox So sorry to hear this distressing news. I know that when God closes a door he opens a window. Try to enjoy some time to yourself and try not to worry. We are all praying for you.

Margie
