Up North 06-16-2009 04:09 PM

Well, I found out today I am being layed off at the end of July... HMMM more time to quilt, less money to spend. I think I am still in shock over it. Somehow we will survive this! This economy just has to pick up soon!

quiltnut4ever 06-16-2009 04:11 PM

Hang in there hon! We're all feeling that pain! Keep quilting till u can't no more!

Moonpi 06-16-2009 04:14 PM

Hang in there. If you currently have health insurance through your job, you may want to take care of medival stuff fast. Those jobs are few and far between.

Shemjo 06-16-2009 04:17 PM

Good advice about health insurance! Explain to the Dr to get the appt fast!
Sorry about the poor news. Enjoy the time that you have!

sandpat 06-16-2009 04:20 PM

I'm sooo sorry...be sure to check into COBRA if you can.

Bevanger 06-16-2009 04:28 PM

i'm so sorry to hear this. i sure hope this economy turns around and fast. my son has been out of work since nov. he is getting so depressed.

live2teach 06-16-2009 04:28 PM

I'm sorry! You hang in there! DH was laid off April 18 and still hasn't started back to work. Thankfully we've made it so far. We were going to take out Cobra but it was cancelled also so we've been without health insurance since the end of April. Thankfully we could get Peyton a medical card and it lasts a whole year regardless...

sewjoyce 06-16-2009 04:32 PM

I'm so sorry to hear that you are being layed off!!

Hang in there!! (And happy quilting!)

Chele 06-16-2009 04:52 PM

Tough news. Hang in there. Get all that medical and unemployment stuff figured out and start your search. You may find a job you like better. Wishing you tons of luck.

Mousie 06-16-2009 05:14 PM

everything, everybody else said, UpNorth and a hug, too.

Butterfli19 06-16-2009 05:24 PM

I'm sorry to hear that. It was decent of them to give you notice, now you have some time to make a plan. The last time I was laid off we were told that day - pack it up and go home, we're filing bankruptcy.

Good luck!

genghis khan 06-16-2009 05:51 PM

Sorry to hear this it wasnt long ago that i posted something like this myself. But on the up side of things all is well here for now and i keep looking and yes i have gotten alot of sewing done. :)

bearisgray 06-16-2009 05:55 PM

sorry about your lay-off -

you might also check into other health insurance that might be more reasonable than the Cobra coverage

amma 06-16-2009 06:18 PM

I am so sorry to hear this! I hope that you can find another job right away!!

Piedmont Quilter 06-16-2009 06:41 PM

Sorry to hear about your layoff. I know it sucks to have more time to sew - but less money to buy fabric. Hopefully you can find something quickly, and unemployment will get you by. Big HUG for you.

Adriane 06-16-2009 06:51 PM

As a lot of people have said, hang in there. I feel your pain/shock. My father was laid off 3 times in the past year, brother lost his information technology job...it's just turbulent out there.

I know it may be cliche, but, when one door closes another opens!

littlehud 06-16-2009 07:10 PM

I am so sorry for you. I hope you can find something else soon. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

pocoellie 06-16-2009 07:12 PM

I'm so sorry to hear about your being laid off. I surely do hope that the economy hurries up and gets better. Hopefully, you'll find a better job.

Quilt4u 06-17-2009 02:00 AM

Sorry to hear. Hang in there. Things have away of working out untill then here is a big hug.

quiltwoman 06-17-2009 02:36 AM

Oh no--I am sorry to hear that.

reneebobby 06-17-2009 02:36 AM

Hang in there and if you can send out the day after your resume to temp agents and maybe you can have some kind of money coming in outside of your unemployment check. Or ride it out and relax for a bit and then head out to the temp world till something better comes along. Good luck.

k3n 06-17-2009 02:43 AM

I'm so sorry to hear that! Here's a HUG!!!

So right!! And, so many of us have been there too!! Try not to panic and try to enjoy a new possible direction. (((quilting hugs)))Skeat

Quilting Aggi 06-17-2009 03:10 AM

ooh I'm sooo sooo sorry to hear that. :( :( :( I am keeping my fingers crossed that the economy picks up and you are back working again.

It is a shock for sure but I know you will get through this. In the meantime take a bit of time to recharge the batteries, do some more quilting (hey, you can make lots of beautiful scrappy quilts if you can't buy any fabrics right now.. go to www.quiltville.com and you will see all kinds of great projects!!! I'm making her crumb quilt right now and having a blast with it!!)

The poor economy has not hit us here in Newfoundland. In fact it seems quite the opposite! It seems when the rest of Canada is dealing with a recession we are prospering! The provincial government just announced a $10 billion extension to the Hibernia oil field yesterday! There are job postings everywhere and people are spending money everywhere it seems! You can go to any restaurant any time of the week and it's packed and the shopping malls are always busy. I work with the Newfoundland/Labrador Housing department with the provincial government. On the wall just on the other side of my little workstation wall here, there are 3 internal job postings that will probably go external in another week time. We are doing alot of hiring the last year or so. Come over here for work!!!!
If you worked here, we can take the lunch hour to walk to the quilt shop only a few minutes walk from here and fondle and play with all the lovely fabrics and patterns!!!

Thinking of you. Please keep us posted when something comes your way!

Cheers
Andrea

mountain-moma 06-17-2009 03:31 AM

So sorry to hear this just remember another door will open for you hang in there

MollieSue 06-17-2009 05:19 AM

I'm so sorry, UpNorth. I know the feeling of total shock, I was let go at lunch time one Friday, the end of January. I am glad they gave you the month's notice though. You can get any medical, etc, taken care of beforehand! I'm still on unemployment, there's not been diddly squat available here.
Hugs to you!!

Debra Mc 06-17-2009 07:50 AM

Been there, done that with month old baby & 5year old. Move to Texas, we would be glad to have you. It's not that bad here. Have some good friends that moved here many years ago from Michigan & they love it. Hope things will work out for you & you will be in all our prayers.

Lacelady 06-17-2009 07:55 AM

Hugs from Ireland for all of you who have lost jobs etc. I hope you all have VERY large stashes, and can at least while away a bit of time as you look for your dream jobs. As this recession bites, I have never been so glad that I am past working age, and have paid for my house. My thoughts are with you all.

Ninnie 06-17-2009 08:05 AM

Hang in there Up North, I do believe things are starting to pick up, so maybe you won't be off to long.

Up North 06-17-2009 12:41 PM

Thanks everyone! I was in a bit of a daze yesterday but I will manage. I don't have a huge stash but I have enough to keep me busy for a while. It will also give me a chance to see my grandkids without worrying about work. They are 7 hours away but will be here for a week the beginning of August. The last time I was layed off it was for 14 months.

MadQuilter 06-17-2009 04:44 PM

Sorry you got the notice. What is your field and what are the prospects in your area? I wish you a successful hunt.

beachlady 06-17-2009 05:14 PM

Hope things turn around for ypou soon. In the meantime enjoy quilting!!!

Lisa T 06-17-2009 08:49 PM

Sorry to hear about your layoff. I think the U.P./Wisc. gets hit a little later than everyone else, don't you? We have been worrying about my DH's job- but so far, so good for us. He doesn't get any overtime anymore, but the upside to that is that we see him a lot more. We have done a lot of fishing with our kids (virtually free entertainment) already this spring- more than we did all summer last year. So there are silver linings.

I agree with everyone who said now you can quilt more! YAY! And there are ways to get fabric cheaper- I have been finding lots at Goodwill. Hopefully this will work out for you- being able to see the grandkids will be awesome!

craftybear 04-18-2010 05:05 PM

How are you doing today? Are you having fun quilting?

Up North 04-18-2010 05:10 PM

Hi! Can't believe this thread resurfaced. Well Unemployment is out but I am learning paper piecing so able to use up some scraps! Glad I save the weirdest stuff too! I spend my days on the computer on this site or at the machine sewing. Nothing promising in the job market yet.
Thanks for asking.

ConnieF 04-18-2010 10:35 PM

Hi Up North,
So sorry you will be joining so many of the rest of us. I havent worked for 1 year 6 mos. DH was out of work for months. We was forced to retire and it isant much more than unempliyment was. Thank goodness for SS and I can start drawing in Aug. Just not to many hireing us older ones. Just get things lined out and start looking and hope you find something else soon, but like some of the other's said quilt, quilt, and quilt. If you are like most of us quilter's this is time to use the stach. I was so blessed to have a stash, threads, and my sewing machiine was paid for about a year before I was out of work... Best wishes.
ConnieF

Up North 04-19-2010 03:35 AM

I have only been quilting for two years, not much stash but I am managing to do as much sewing as I can. There are always sheets and cloths to cut into if I run out. I did buy a new machine last year before I was laid off and it is paid for so that is a plus! There are just NO jobs here Unless you are a nurse or a certified Auto mechanic!

We'll make it it is just hard not to be able to buy things.

JJs 04-19-2010 04:43 AM

but but wait, according to the prez (that hopey changey stuff) the recession is officially over....
I guess they figure if they "talk it in" it means it really happened...
tell that to all the people down here in an area that was already depressed, and now what little work was here is GONE...

CarrieAnne 04-19-2010 04:45 AM

Aw, sending you some Hugs! I am in Wisconsin, and its seems that almost everyone I know has a family member laid off, or whose job ended! We are by the janesville GM plant, and when that shut down, ALOT went with it........I sure hope the economy gets better soon!

Bailey's mom 04-19-2010 04:49 AM

Boy do I understand...lost mine last June. I wish you the best..I did get insurance which wasn't easy to find affordably but I am covered if I have a major illness or need surgery.
Hang in there hon!!!
