Long hair on cooking show hosts

Yuck! I'm so sick of seeing long stringy hair on cooking show hosts. I have a hard time concentrating on what they're cooking because I'm wondering how many hairs are floating in the bowl.

ptquilts 11-10-2011 10:43 AM

lol!! let's get them some hair nets, like lunch ladies!!

Bobby's Girl 11-10-2011 10:53 AM

I have a problem with the long hair issue, too. I watch several cooking competition programs ("Chopped," "The Next Iron Chef" etc.), and many of the contestants not only have long, loose hair, but they also look grungy and are unkempt in general. I wouldn't eat anything they cook.

Airwick156 11-10-2011 10:55 AM

I'm with you on the long hair issues. AND have you ever noticed......that it doesn't matter what they have cooked, when the take a bite of it.....they say it is THE BEST perfectly cooked, seasoned, etc etc....Bull Hockey....I am sure that some of it doesn't taste very good. LOL

Sadiemae 11-10-2011 10:58 AM

It would bother me if I had to eat their food...

sandybuttons 11-10-2011 12:31 PM

I have long hair and when I cook I make sure I have my hair in a clip pulled back so no one finds a hair in their food:)

DebraK 11-10-2011 01:24 PM

As do I. Short hair falls in too ;-)

Charlee 11-10-2011 01:26 PM

The long hair doesn't bother me nearly as much as them sweating and dripping....I can pick a hair out if I have to...

DebraK 11-10-2011 01:27 PM

hahaha. I know what you mean. I didn't want to say anything ;-)

nativetexan 11-10-2011 02:21 PM

ha, ha, good one. i keep wondering about the t.v. shows where women are in the lab working on crime evidence and they have no hair nets. hairs flying everywhere and no one cares.
of course getting someones hair in real food is more important.

ChaiQuilter 11-10-2011 02:47 PM

I once saw a cooking show host swipe his sleeve across his nose and then just continue the demonstration...yuck

athomenow 11-10-2011 02:55 PM

Seinfeld said it best, "people love long hair and comment on how beautiful it is but let one of them get loose and people will freak out". I worked in a restaurant and hair is the least of our worries.

Kas 11-10-2011 06:26 PM

Not only do they sweat into the food, but they also taste with a spoon and then tap the rest back into the pot!!!!!! OMG! How disgusting is that? I used to work at a bar that was attached to an upscale resturant. The chef was so gross. He had dandruff in his beard and he would clean the edges of the plates going out with his apron that was coated in the night's drips, splats and all the other plates. I would not eat there.

Murphy 11-10-2011 06:31 PM

Me as well!!

I agree about the hair. Pull it back or net it. The one that really disgusts me, and I know a lot of people love her to death, Paule Deen. Sweet, sweet, woman, however, I don't care how pretty, or expensive, or how shiny the rocks look in the studio lighting, take those dirty, nasty, rings off before you mix food with your bare hands. Gaa! I saw her mix up a sweet potato casserole 2 years ago. I'll bet it is still in those rings. Ewww.

moonwork42029 11-10-2011 07:24 PM

Paula Deen keeps her rings on because she told Michael she could always get them dirty and cleaned back up but she couldn't do anything if they fell in the trash or disposal. She said he told her he'd rather her keep them on.

I don't take my rings off for anything either and they clean up real nicely.

I can't stand when I see them sweat and it drips...that is just too gross. Sometimes the judges make comments on the "double dipping" but it sure seems like it happens a lot of times. They must have a jumbo supply of tasting spoons where we can't see them.

MissSandra 11-10-2011 07:26 PM

I have long hair I always pin it up and I still worrie about loosing a hair

june6995 11-11-2011 05:07 AM

I am going to stick my nose in here and might even get it smashed....but.....I have been wondering............
what started all this craze of having long hair? If it is kept clean, neat, and trimmed so there are no straggly ends, it looks fine, but the stringy hair is unsightly. I thought about this craze and the only thing I can relate it to is...
dancers and cheer-leaders, etc., who bend over and flip their hair over their head? Is there supposed to be something beautiful about that? The hair winds up messy and wild looking. Is it the Born to Be Wild Craze?

Why are so many older women (and that included Hillary Rodham Clinton) wearing long hair? For some women it really makes them appear to be older and haggard. Do they ever look in the mirror? Where does the fad end??

I am wondering where this craze came from? For years the statement about hair was that men like long hair. How true is that? And WHY????

June in Cincinnati

nunnyJo 11-11-2011 05:57 AM

that is also my pet peeve. makes me sicak

mojo11 11-11-2011 09:12 AM

I agree with the long hair and cooking. The double-dipping is horrid. Also, do they ever wash their hands? Some shake hands with the audience and then start cooking immediately. GROSS!!!!!!!!!!!

To each is own, I will keep my long hair until I choose to cut it. I like being able to braid it in the summer and keep it completely up and away from my head. I have a lot of hair and even short it would be too hot for me.

sarahrachel 11-11-2011 10:17 AM

I have long hair, but I can't stand having it in my face so it is always pulled up somehow. And double dipping is gross if you are a chef and getting paid for it, but in my house, if something is cooking on the stove and you want to taste, you pick up the stirring spoon and taste it with that, but the first sign of someone being sick, they're kicked out of the kitchen. But hair in food is gross, especially long hair because it just keeps coming as you try to pull it out!

Agree, love Barfoot contessa -Ina Garten but she uses sooooooooooo much salt ,it is incredible, that really worries me..

ptquilts 11-11-2011 11:34 AM

even when I am just cooking for DH and me, I use the stirring spoon to drop some of the food onto a tasting spoon, which then goes in my mouth - not back in the food - YUCK to multiple people lapping in the food while it is cooking!!

Chele 11-11-2011 01:46 PM

I can gross myself out if I think too hard. I never understood the disgust of hair, you can pick it out. Plus most people wash their hair. No sweat, spit, mouth bacteria, dandruff, blood, dirt, fingertips, bugs, or cross contamination in my food please. Hairless would be nice too, but sometimes it happens. Gee whiz, now I don't want to eat out tonight. Think they'll let me back in the kitchen?

nativetexan 11-11-2011 03:18 PM

Pick it out!!! yuck. i ate at an oriental fast food place when working in Houston and didn't order from that place again for years. sorry, but i dont even want to pick my own hair out of my food. hair nets are a must in food service of any kind.

Chele 11-11-2011 07:06 PM

Had a lovely meal out tonight. No hair. Cannot be sure about sweat, saliva or nasty hands. It's a rough world out there! Maybe the germs make us tougher? It is my hope.

Ditto and they don't seem to wash their hands either!

I was a kitchen manager for many years, Our health department had a very long detailed list of must does to be followed, and we did, When hired each new employee was handed those list and a second list of my rules. They were told to read them before the first day of work when they arrived I asked if they had read them if they said yes, I asked them to sign a statment saying they had read all the rules and agreed to abide by them if they did not it was grounds for imedient dismissel. If I got the OH I forgot to read them line I showed them the door. All the rules and regulations were basic common sence. Wash hands, if wearing rings were gloves change gloves when changing what your doing , wash hands inbetween gloves, everyone wears hairnet, and beard and mushstash nets as needed. I don't care if facel hair is 1/16 or 6 inches, your hair can be 1/2 in and it will still fall out just as offten as hair that is 2 foot long. Got the sniffels, stay home, have allergies, take something for it. No sneezing allowed in kitchen! The list went on and on. LOL some times I had to stop and explain why the rules existed. but after weeding out some real doozies, It took about 8 months I had a very good crew, had one young man that took a break after breakfast and before lunch to step into the mens room and shave , he hated the nets and had a beard that showed up after about 4-5 hrs.Any good business or cook, chef. ect will want only the best for his business and clients, I really wonder about the "professionals" you see on TV? Are the just actors? or just don't care about there customers health? Now that I've had my rant I'll shut up! LOL

Missysgottohelp 11-11-2011 08:29 PM

Seems to me that everyone is forgetting that it's TV!!! I'm sure that they are not that way in their kitchens at work or they would not have a business to run. I've worked in alot of kitchens and I know our Health Inspectors would shut us down and I'm sure they have to abide by the same rules.

All you have to do is alter her recipe. I do it all the time. I cut about 75% of the fat out of the recipes and I use about have the salt they call for. There are plenty of ways to "liven" up a dish besides salt.

Maybe the Barefoot Contessa should cut down on the salt and her feet won't swell, so she can wear her shoes again. :))

It's the dirty fingernails that I notice!

Annaquilts 11-12-2011 05:06 AM

Just the title of your post makes me feel sick already.

Greenheron 11-12-2011 05:18 AM

That's not a rant Gramie, that's how kitchens should be. I cook at a camp every year and agonized over if everything was safe and sanitary. My DS, who cooks professionally, said our kitchen and procedures were better than the restaurants where he had been employed.

I agree with the long hair. Once while watching Martha Stewart someone asked her about touching her hair and then fixing food. Since then, (I think) she has her bangs longer and I don't notice it as much. Sorry, this is under chit chat = unquilt related!!

Parker2100 08-09-2012 10:48 PM

Hi friends one time a saw a cooking show host in a cooking show she has Long hairs of her and she is using a special comb for her hair i have no idea how about her hairs measurement but her hairs are reached on Knees and she is looking very beautiful with this hairs i like this type of hairs because this is also a source of increase beauty of yours..

ptquilts 08-10-2012 05:48 AM

I love watching Lidia but she always has those bangle bracelets on!! First thing I would take off if I was cooking.

I agree, it is only TV, but think what an influence the cooks could have if they made a point of washing their hands frequently.

SouthPStitches 08-10-2012 02:24 PM

After reading this, I'm trying to visualize Giada D. or Sandra Lee with big black, old lady hairnets. The kind Ruth Buzzy used to wear on Laugh In....the kind with the big old knot in the center of the forehead. Wow, I'm showing my age right now!

ptquilts 08-10-2012 02:43 PM

now I'm laughing too!!
