other names for grandma

I will be a first time grandmother in July! I'm trying to decide on my title to be called.

Sadly, my daughter's husband's mother is already called Grandma (gramma) by her 3 other grandchildren.
I want to be identifiable by another name.

I called my own grandmothers, big grandma & little grandma, not flattering as it should've been tall & short. My cousin hates being called Grandma San Diego. My kids called my own mom plain, with honor, Grandma, since she was the real hands on and fun one. My husband's mom was Grandma Charlotte because they rarely saw her and she never changed a diaper or fed them, mostly she just watched them as interesting. I thought of GrandmaC (my name is Cathy) but the other one is Cheri, too close & same initial. My daughter doesn't want Nana or anything that's too different from Grandma.

I thought of SewGrandma, but that's probably kind of corny. However, I should ask my daughter about that one since it's kind of an honor if you think "SooooGrandma"!

So far the winner idea is Grandmom since my husband wants Grandad. I realize that Grandmom will actually sound like grandma by a toddler but maybe it could be Granmomma until older boyhood when he can actually say it right. Regardless if the momma ending is used or not, I will at least have a different signature.

What do you think of SewGrandma and Grandmom?

adamae 03-27-2015 09:49 AM

My DIL will be called Grammy with her first grandchild. Since, I am great garland, I wonder what I will be called.

lynnie 03-27-2015 09:51 AM

My son called me MIMI and my mom MOMA
when he was about 3 1/2 it finally came thru as Mommy and Grandma, he just couldn't pronounce it.
We always call aunts and uncles ''aunt Deb", why not grandma Cathy.

Some fall back to their nationality, nona, gemma, tia, ect. how about that why not grammy or grannie(that sounds like you need a rocking chair). Let us know what you pick.

SS Muro 03-27-2015 09:55 AM

My daughter's children call me Nonni and my son's daughters call me Nonna.

kathy 03-27-2015 09:57 AM

my grandmothers were as different as night and day, we called them Grandma last name and Grandma last name They were loved equally. mine call me Mimi, my mother was Memaw. my other mother is Maudi Mae. lots to choose from

starshine 03-27-2015 10:14 AM

My dil's mom is grammy as their earlier grand child called her that and she wanted to keep her title with my ds & ddil; so I opted for grandma plain and simple. However when my kids were little I felt grandma with the last name seemed too formal(what we as children called our grandmas & grandpas) so I had them call them grandma and their first names. Neither lived close though so they didn't have a lot of interaction.

Kitsie 03-27-2015 10:20 AM

Nana. That's me and I love it!

Nammie to 7 03-27-2015 10:21 AM

Mine call me Nammie -- my first couldn't make the GR sound.

nannyrick 03-27-2015 10:35 AM

I am "Nanny" to my seven Gkids. It was the name for my Nanny, so my first to have
a child had him call me Nanny and it has been that way since. I love it.

Neesie 03-27-2015 10:47 AM

Since your daughter will likely be called Mommy, you could be Grandmommy. :)

notmorecraft 03-27-2015 11:27 AM

I'm going to be a first time grandma in Sept, I think I would like to be called Nonna (I believe it's Itailan ) as my name is Norma, however sometimes little people have their own ideas. My son would only ever call my dad Bobby (which is his name) his other grandpa was papa, when he was old enough we asked him why he never called my dad grandpa or papa and he said because he's Bobby and he's not old enough to be a grandpa( my dad was 55 at the time).

cindi 03-27-2015 11:42 AM

My grandkids call me Neena. No way was I gonna be called gramma. I'm still feeling too young for that, LOL!

My grandsons call me Grandma Jenny. My granddaughter calls me Nano.

KarenSimon 03-27-2015 12:05 PM

My friend has numerous grands and great grands. They all call her nannie. We only have one grand and he calls us Grandma Karen and Grandpa Jim. For his other grandma it is Nana. He called his other grandfather, Pop until his recent death. By the way he died at 11:34 pm on January 31st. Social Security had to have the whole month's check back. Our government screwed up... again...

sewbelle52 03-27-2015 12:08 PM

I'm a Granna.

masufa 03-27-2015 12:11 PM

Grams or Nana

My DH family has so many nicknames for the grandmas. Mimi is what all the grandkids call his mom. He called both of his grandmothers Bing. Apparently the oldest sibling started it. He couldn't pronounce grandma but how he came up with Bing is beyond me. Eons ago my boss was Dutch and when he brought his mother over to visit, everyone called her Oma. For the longest time I thought that was actually her name. It wasn't until much later I learned it was dutch for grandma. I always liked Oma both the person and the term.

QuiltnNan 03-27-2015 12:37 PM

That's what my Grandmothers were to me, don't know where it started. I've been Nana from the start with DGS. I do know that children will sometimes decide for themselves. We had a pretty big surprise when DGS came up with his name for grandpa. We had a schnauzer that was his watchdog and buddy from the beginning. His name was Puder Tute(my version of Powder Horn in German..right or wrong!). We could not get DGS to say grandpa at first, but DD called one day to say he was trying to tell them about grandpa and he finally came out with "Poopa"! All we can figure out is that he took the sounds of Puder and grandpa and combined them! Sorry for the long tale.

GrammaNan 03-27-2015 01:51 PM

My intention was to have my GK call me Gramma Nan. My DS kids call me Gramma Last name and I don't like it. They call their other grandma...grandma. My DD's little girl will be two in a couple of months and she calls me Mae-Mae. I love it.

lynnie 03-27-2015 02:21 PM

Me-maw hows that one?

SewExtremeSeams 03-27-2015 02:25 PM

Two of my grandchildren used to refer to us as Grandma and Grandpa Far because we live what they call "a longgg ways away." Their other grandparents live in town. I like being called Grandma Linda.

Susanna10 03-27-2015 02:37 PM

We are called Granddad and Grandma with the kittens. We have cats.

We are Grandma and Grandpa and I never worried about it making me sound old. Mr. Stitchnripper is 12 years my junior and step grandparent and he embraced the Grandpa and the grandkids adore him. Their other grandmother chose Nana. We were very close which was great for the kids but sadly, she passed a couple of years ago.

If I couldn't be Grandma I'd want to be Grammy, Gram or something like that with my initial or name. Like Grammy A.

francie yuhas 03-27-2015 03:07 PM

I was "chicken gramma" until the kids got old enough to drop the chicken part. The other DGM lives in the city.

Mariposa 03-27-2015 03:11 PM

Around here, we are Grammy & Papa.
Great-grandma became Gigi~

I had two wonderful grandmothers. Mom's mother was Granny. Dad's mom was Grandma. Never had to wonder which one I was speaking about.
My husband's two oldest grandchildren, now in their 30's, have always called him Pancake. When first grandchild Kristi was about two she announced she had so many grandfathers - her dad's father, her dad's grandfather, her mother's father, her mother's stepfather, and even my dad got in there. My parents became Grandma and Grandpa Ted. Because we always took the family to IHOP when we visited them in Florida my husband became "the Pancake Grandpa" which quickly became Pancake. The other grandchildren call him Grandpa Jack (and me Grandma Verna) but to Kristi and Bobby it's Pancake to this day.

nativetexan 03-27-2015 03:23 PM

I am one of many Grandmothers. I tried for Grandmama but it didn't take. I think I"m GrandmaCase and Mom to my son. Had to call my own Mother, Mother. Never Mom.

Annaquilts 03-27-2015 03:35 PM

I like granny. It might sound old but you can keep that name till you are great great grandma. My kids chose what the grand children call me. It ranges from oma, bubu to grandma. It is all good as long as they call me.

momto5 03-27-2015 03:49 PM

Since I grew up speaking French, my grandmas were Memere....with the last name.

misspriss 03-27-2015 04:06 PM

Congratulations on your new adventure in life. And it will be great.
We did not live close to the grand parents, (military family) so we had grandma and grandpa Kansas and grandma and grandpa P( our last name initial) Our grand children called us grapes and grames because the parents would say "we are going to grampas and grandmas) The younger ones would pick it up from the older ones.

Quilty-Louise 03-27-2015 04:17 PM

I am due to have my first grandson in about 16 day (give or take a day or so).
My name is going to be Yaya (at least for now, might just go to nana).

Cass62 03-27-2015 04:24 PM

My mom was known as "Gram" to the grandchildren. I have a friend who is called "Honey" by her grandchildren, and her mother is "G.G." for "great grandma".

redquilter 03-27-2015 04:25 PM

I'm Nana and that's what I wanted. I wouldn't dream of letting my daughter's tell me what to be called by my grandchildren just as I wouldn't dream of telling them they should be called momma, mommy, mom - whatever.

decky 03-27-2015 04:36 PM

My grands call us grandma and grandpa and the other grandparents, oma and papa. My sisters grandkids call her gma. My husband called his grandparents popeye and grannie.
