"Rat killing" as in to be doing something. okay; I will let you go back to your rat killing now.
**ew - only had to handle a rat 1 time & the cat took care of that....

"gallivanting" - to wander about. (dictionary.com also has to go about with members of the opposite sex as a definition)
**I'm in a 4-way stop in the middle of nowhere; where would I gallivant???

"I'm cold, put a sweater on" - mothers tell their kids

Ya'll don't throw things at me but just once I wish we could have some real snow & not the one inch we get sometimes. Last time I remember having anything was 20 years ago. We are due for a good ice storm. Bet this will be the year. We have a lot trees in our county & it does cause a lot of trouble as the breaking trees causes the power to go out. That means my kids will be moving in for a week or 2 as they live in the country.

I use that all the time and I am always surprised when someone hasn't heard that expression.

Come stay with us and you will get all the snow and ice you want! Right now our town roads are snow covered solid ice. Just went to uptown to the post office sliding all the way. What fun!

Backing up does not constitute gallivanting - I think that leaves you three directions. lol

Iowa has this stigma that everyone who lives in Iowa is a hick. No brains and no manners.

Another version of the holler is-- It's just a hoot and a holler away.

I love Iowa. We have family in the Amana Colonies (going back to the 1800's. I wish I could remember some of the sayings about Minnesota from Iowa and vicey versy. They are priceless. Our favorite though came from Iowa - Iowa - A State of Mind!!!!! If you can remember any of them could you let me know. The jawing back and forth was so funny!

I just got out my handy-dandy little atlas and found you are in the southern part of Iowa. I hope you didn't get blasted like we did! Our relatives in Cedar Rapids said they got it pretty good - around 11".

All of our state is just joking with Iowa with the jokes. It is just too bad they are all true!!!!! Just joking! Edie

Sorry ER I guess I don't know any of the Iowa/Minnesota jokes! Maybe that is a northern Iowa sort of thing?

We got about 5" or so of snow but it turned to rain later in the day on Tues and now we have ice under the snow. I went up to the post office earlier today and the town streets are snow covered ice. Not much fun to drive on but par for the course for Iowa. At least it wasn't the 12" to 16" they were predicting. When I went out to start the van there was about 3" of snow ontop and it was crusted with an icy crust on top.

It relates to sailing a ship; i.e., on a calm sea, a ship may be pointing in one direction while drifting in another direction due to currents. Here's a link to the explanation I found http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/93227. It's pretty interesting, especially the real-world explanation at the bottom.
