It could also apply to the process of preserving meat I don't know how it came to mean "the matter has been decided" |

I was at the dollar store a little while ago & the clerk asked this man how he was doing & he said fair. Then she said fair to midland. Never understood this one either. I always thought cut & dry meant it was over & done with.
