I don't remember can can slips, but does anyone recall Nehru shirts, Madras fabric, or Dr. Kildare white shirts that buttoned to one side of center, with what I call a priest's collar (supposed to be a doctor look)? I loved my Dr. Kildare shirt.
|
Oh boy do I remember Nehru shirts and Madras. Wasn't Dr Kildare a cutie back then.
|

Bananna turkish taffy was my favorite. Yum will try to order some.
Hairdo's in those days certainly was weird. I thought I had a migrain headache for 4 days in my senior year. It was caused from teasing my hair so tight rofl. I have worn short hair ever since. Had a cancan skirt when I was real young but half way thru high school we switched to go go boots and mini skirts rofl. Remember the teachers measuring the length and sending us home if to short. So yoiu rolled them up and let them down when you spotted them chefcking. WOW what memories.lol  |

What a lovely memory. Sure does take me back...WAY back.
And recently, in a massively slow de-cluttering, I found one of a daughter's old, Avon I think it was, lip balm shaped like an ice cream cone!! I sent it to her...she is a grandmother now and will probably have it for them to play with. Gads...my daughter is a GRANDMOTHER!!!! Now I feel real old..our would if I had time to think about it. |
And one of the best I remember is "I solemnly swear by Cary Grant!" and you had to keep your word.
Those Poodle skirts with the under skirts stiffened with sugar water and then ironed to a cardboard stiffness, that is, until you started sweating or sat down, then the whole thing stuck to your legs. And saddle shoes with one penny in each shoe, the dates on them must be the same or else bad luck, and ankle socks turned down exactly two times. Hair swept up in front, flat on top I think and then rolled all around on the ends. Murder to keep up. I had a picture of me in a lovely poodle skirt..in later years it made me look like I was slowly sinking into the ground, so I cut up the picture and was glad the skirt was history. |
what flash backs. It reminds me of jump ropes, hula hoops, jacks and many more. I had lots of pop beads when I was a little girl. I had a few pearl toned ones. they were like diamonds to me. no one could touch those.and wow I loved the waxed lips, black wax mustaches etc. remember the little dots of candy on a piece of paper ( kinda like register reciept paper)That was all penny candy and some 5 cents. black licorice pipes. I could go on and on. thanks for the memories Mary

I got some pink, blue and white ones for my 8th birthday. I didn't know until now that they made earrings or that grownups wore them. I might still have mine up in the attic. Maybe with my Tiny Tears doll.

Candy dots! Still one of my favorites. In fact, I have a package in my sewing room. I keep it in reserve, you never know when you'll need candy dots.
|
Mine were pink and yellow.
CLAMOUROUS was I. |
Oh wow, Tiny tears, my favorite doll. How about roller skates, with the key we wore around our necks. Scarves on our ponytails. ....../..Michele
|
remember making scooters and coasters from old 2x4"s and skate wheels. We put old tuna cans on the front to look like headlights. Mary
|
Yeah and find a big hill to go down, boy we were crazy, lucky we are still here to talk about it,lol.........Michele
|
I used to love pop beads! My friend and I would chew on them and one day I ran home crying because I swallowed one! My Dad comforted me and never really explained where it would end up but not to chew them anymore!
My Mom washed in the wringer washer...it was a good day because she made homemade bread and a big pot of chili on wash day! |
You are going to think I am crazy, but does anyone remember running behind the mosqutio truck that use to come around fogging the neighbor hood to kill mosgutios, we were just talking about that at work the other day, we never thought anything of it back then, was just fun running through the fog, heaven knows what that stuff did to our lungs......Michele

If we're going doing memory lane, how about Sky King, Fury, Howdy Doody, Captain Kangaroo, The Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, Saturday morning cartoons (REAL cartoons, not what they show today), mom and dad watching Lawrence Welk on Saturday night.
|
Do you remember the candy elastic necklaces that left our neck so sticky. Hoop skirts. Rag rollers for your hair. Large cardboard boxes for sleds. Hair teased and so full of hairspray that when your head would itch, you used a small knitting needle to scratch. No crime, left the keys in the car and never locked our house, probably didn't have a key.
|
I remember those! I hadn't thought of them in years. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I have enjoyed this trip too. I had to read thru all the posts to make sure no one enter my idea already . I remember most of what you all mentioned.
No one mentioned ....SPOOLIES....the pink rubber curlers that folded back onto themselves to hold the roller. Please tell me that someone else remembers them ! ! !! (~.~) |
I remember them........Michele
|
Michele,
Did You use them ? |
When I took a Club Med vacation years ago, these beads were used as currency. You bought them on account (used credit to pay) and then used them to pay for drinks and such. The joke was that you started out with a belt and ended the week with a ring. It was a fun way to handle money without having to carry any cash on you.
|
I remember buying pop beads for my daughter. Like most things, they were tossed when she grew up & needed to get rid of things. I did find some pop beads for my granddaughters a year or 2 ago. They love them as much now as my daughter did when she was little. What memories are brought back by this thread.
|
No, I never used the spoolies, but I knew a couple of girls I went to school with that did. I used the mesh and magnetic rollers and slept on them, I got so use to sleeping in them they never bothered me.......Michele
|
I used to love to sit and peel the pearl coating off them when I was in study hall. Should have been studying, and would have had the beads still. Oh, the things we threw out that we wished we still had.
|
I have 5 brothers and no sisters and way back when I had pop beads and they were like real pearls to me. My brothers were not allowed to touch. But I did get teased. Thanks for the memory
|
I sort of remember these.
|
What wonderful memories. I had the light pink pop beads. The poodle skirt. Wonderful times. Just like on happy days.
I must be old too. |
What about Shirley Temple dolls? I still have mine.
|
Oh yes..do I remember those!! I can't believe I slept in those every night.....I think my head still has dents from using them so much!!!!!
Also...love hearing about all the penny candies from the 50's. Does ANYONE remember this one??...........it was a mini silver tart pan (really tiny ) that came with a mini spoon and it was filled with chocolat, vanilla or strawberry cream that you scrapped out and ate with this mini spoon and the fun part was trying to get the cream out of all the little grooves of the pan...they cost 1 cent!!! I don't know what they were called. |
I never got a Shirley Temple doll, actually, I always wanted one of those little chalk dollies that weren't caucasian. I thought they were adorble, still do. I've still got a set of tiny little plastic dolls that mom sent in labels for (can't remember the product). They have those open/close eyes and moveable limbs....rubber band kind. They are ratty, I think they represented different nations.
But, we kept them. And I have one preteen dolly but I don't remember what she is called. Could look it up on ebay, that is a great source for antiques! I broke my addiction to ebay when I found this board. This one is much better! Blessings, Ruth |
I remember most of the things that have been mentioned, but I had forgotten about spoolies, my mother used to put my hair on them when I was little, I played with them just to watch them pop up when you pushed them down. I had an older sister, so I remember alot about the late 50's and early 60's. She used to listen to Rock n Roll when that is what it really was, not like some of the music today.
Some one mentioned Roy Rogers, I heard where RF Television is bringing Trigger and Roys' dog, Bullet(they are stuffed) on a tour around the country. They are supposed to stop in Portsmouth, OH, Roy Rogers' birthplace. I don't know the dates though. Thanks for taking me down memory lane. |
