The thread about different foreign coins made me think of this.
I help elderly folks (as if I weren't one myself!) and sometimes they ask me if there is anything I would like to have. The only thing I've ever mentioned is pop beads from the 50's. I was so enchanted with them when I was a child and was not allowed to look at jewelry or make up.....tabu. But, I always wanted those beautiful beads that you pop together, pop apart and mix. I know they had earrings that were clip ons. I never got to see them close up. I had a teacher who wore hers everyday with a different colored leaf shaped pop on. Does anyone have any earrings they would part with?? or just a picture would do. I want to know in my old age that I haven't hallucinated. and if I am, I surely have enjoyed it. lol

Blessings,
Ruth

OK you are not so old. I used to have a ton of the beads in a box and would play with them nonstop. Made them for me and my dolls, Charming Chatty was my favorite. Glad she found you a place to get some. And I think you should. LOL. Let us know. With Halloween coming up I must add that I loved buying the "red lips" and the orange harmonica in wax and then eating them. The taste was so good to me. Chewed it up and spit it out. Strange things we remember. They still have them too. I look at them and am tempted at times. Now I am definitely going to buy one this year and just enjoy. HUGS

drivingsusan 09-06-2010 05:41 AM

Sorry, I do not have any.
But you have revived memories :-D that I have not thought of in YEARS!!!
My sisters and I got them for Christmas one year!
We were "grand ladies' for a long time!!
If you find any--be sure to post them on here - it would be nice to see them again!!

pojo 09-06-2010 05:42 AM

Walmart used to carry them in their craft department but they don't now.

donnajean 09-06-2010 05:45 AM

I never would have remembered the pop beads if you had not mentioned them. I had them but they got left behind when I went off to college. Who know where they ended up.

I have one strand of pop beads and love them. Although they aren't the same ones that I played with as a child, they're close enough. I can't part with them. But I do remember the clip earrings that you could pop different beads onto. They weren't quite the same as the necklace ones. The earring ones only had the hole in them not the shaft. Avon also made ones that looked like flattened shank buttons that popped onto a back. I think that you got 4 different color sets when you ordered the backing. If my memory serves me correctly there were several different sets you could get to fit the backings. Boy has that ever brought back old memories.

p.s. the ones I have are pearly pale pink

nursie76 09-06-2010 05:58 AM

Oh wow! What a blast from the past! I don't remember earrings, but I sure remember the necklaces I made with those things! I loved them....wonder what ever happened to them? I also remember those wax lips and harmonica or pan pipe type wax things filled with colored sugar water...how about the wax mini coke bottles in a six pack remember them? Oh, oh, and how about the candy cigarettes and candy lipstick (vibrant red - as was your mouth when you ate it) with the bottom wrapped in gold paper to look like a sophisticated lipstick tube. And I think you can still find the fake mini ice cream cones with marshmallow ice cream. Man! I haven't thought about those things for years!

Hope you find your pop bead earrings. Thanks for the memories of my childhood.

litacats 09-06-2010 06:20 AM

(as nursy76 said)WOW that is a blast from the past, I had some many years ago and loved them I think mine were only red ones but you could buy others to mix and match

Chele 09-06-2010 06:25 AM

I'd love to play with those pop beads while I chewed on my wax lips! They look like a lot of fun!

SharonAnne 09-06-2010 06:31 AM

My great aunt wore pop beads ALL the time, and I had some, too. Just loved them. But I don't remember the earrings. Funny you mention them, because I was on a quest for them recently. Found a small strand of light pink ones in a bag of old jewelry at an antique store. The owner was really nice and let me buy JUST the pop beads for $1. It is only enough to go around my wrist with about 8 beads left over to pop when I feel like it. My DH says the bracelet looks tacky, but "I" think it's a great conversation piece, so I wear it anyway. Thanks for the memories.

Jeanniejo 09-06-2010 06:32 AM

I did see pop beads in the Cracker Barrel store a while back. Not sure they still carry them. Also loved the candy dots that stuck to a long strip of paper. Wonder how much paper we ate just getting them off ???? Bemans and Clove gum too !

amandasgramma 09-06-2010 06:34 AM

Wow -- did you ever bring back memories!!!! I have a few little beads I've been able to salvage....I LOVED them!!!! I've never seen earrings made from them before!

CoyoteQuilts 09-06-2010 07:07 AM

Drats! I had the both, earrings and beads. I just went through my jewelry box and I don't have them any more. Not sure where they disappeared to..... I got mine in the early 60's and I had all the colors for the leaves in the earrings. Why I had clip/screw earrings is beyond me 'cause I had pierced ears then. I'll start looking in the 2nd hand shops out here. I'm sure I'll run across them sometime. I popped my beads so much that they wore out!

emt2004 09-06-2010 07:43 AM

Those were the days !!! I had pop beads of all colors, have no idea what happen to them. I sure do love reminising about the good old days..........we had so much fun !!!!Michele

ok, I have these few handy. I think I have turquoise and brown in my storage. They look pretty rough, but look at the age, nearly as old as I am. lol

The tips break easily due to drying of age. I collected these in recent years. Usually they have been in junk stores among a mess of stuff.

With child safety awareness and the national institute on safety, choking was the hazard they thought to be the problem so they got rid of a lot of things.

I still wear them sometimes, like in winter with a sweater.

Love the brightly colored ones. Don't recall seeing those before. No babes in my house anymore, so I don't have to worry about choking hazard. Now to find more than the bracelet I have. I'm on a quest. The most fun is the hunt and the finding.

Oh man! I remember the clove gum and the gum (Beemans?) in the blue package that was licorice flavoered too! I do believe they had clove lifesavers that my mom used to buy by the box. I also love the candy dots on paper. Gosh! I remember them all....perhaps I had a little too much sugar?

ann clare 09-06-2010 10:27 AM

Colored ones brought back happy memories. I call them Golden Oldies. Thanks for the memories.

mrspete 09-06-2010 12:20 PM

There is a gum called BlackJack, also. If you go to the website of the catalog called The Vermont Store, you'll find a lot of the oldies for sale. I love the catalog. If you keep the catalog you don't have to take up space with all the odds and ends....like Tangee Natural Lipstick and Evening in Paris Perfume, it goes on and on. lol

Y'all have fun, I am.

Blessings,
Ruth

What memories from the past. I had pastel colored pop-beads and I, too, popped them so much they wouldn't stay together any more. Thanks, now I can't get the taste memory of those wax lips out of my head!!

Barbm 09-06-2010 01:11 PM

thanks for this thread! We are doing a 50s theme for our family reunion next year. I'm in charge of finding something for the kids. Guess what I'm getting!

THANKS!!!!!

P.S. I've played with these and wax lips- and I was born at the end of the decade.

Sure do!!! Had my share of "Happy Fizzy Parties".. Sometimes it made me say, "Indigesssssstion". Recall that commercial?

Kooklabell 09-06-2010 04:39 PM

OMG! I remember playing with my mother's "pearls". I loved those things. I never knew they made earings. My mom didn't wear them until she had her ears pierced. My dad didn't approve of pierced ears. I was 21 when I did it and I was afraid he'd see them! LOL

God Bless you for bring back such great memories!!!

nursie76 09-06-2010 05:04 PM

Oh my goodness! Yep I remember Fizzies. I would beg my mom to get them, then half the time after I watched them Fizz, I wouldn't drink them....didn't really like them, just loved to watch them fizz.

I loved fizzies. Would buy my own package and break them up and eat slowly. Wow a lot like eating Pop Rocks only better flavors.

I loved my pop beads.

I loved the lipsticks, use to get them every chance I got... and the pop beads were the greatest.:)... Wow this is a Blast From the Past...lol

mrspete 09-06-2010 06:48 PM

I got punishment once for popping beads in class. They were my future sister inlaw's. Oh boy, was I in double trouble. I had to write 100 times It is wrong to disturb my classmates. I bet they have the same problem with bubble wrap.....it's an addiction. I love the beads. got some ordered to add to my collection. I have to go unpack the garage to find my turquoise beads. The gold and pearl coatings have peeled off. Man, y'all just don't know how much I enjoy this. Thanks, its like a PJ Party!

Blessings,
Ruth

JoAnnGC 09-06-2010 06:52 PM

Oh how fun! I remember all of these goodies from the past. My sister and I had a big tupperware container filled with pop beads in various "pearly" colors. I remember my Dad would get mad at us if we left them on the floor and he happened to step on them :) I loved the wax lips and wax soda bottles. We also loved the candy buttons on the long paper strips. My favorite candy by far was Bonomo's Turkish Taffy. I also remember trying out my Mom's Tangee lipstick as well as her My Sin, Arpege or Evening in Paris perfumes. I have to ask, Ruth, why were you not allowed to even look at jewelry or makeup when you were a child?

littlehud 09-06-2010 07:10 PM

Wow did you bring back some memories. I would love to find them for DGD.

Oh no! Wax lips brought back another childhood memory. I thought those were the most wonderful things---until this next day. When I woke and found that my eyes had swollen shut, my lips and tongue had swollen bigger than the bright red wax lips! I had such a horrible allergic reaction to them that mom wouldn't even let me have any of those tiny wax bottles that had little drinks in them.

We did occasionally get Chick-O-Sticks, Sixlets, and some other penny candy though. The worst was the big orange fluffy yucky Circus Peanuts that Grandma and Grandpa always gave us. I fed mine to their dog.

Mom was an Avon lady so we always had lipstick in every color available but we were only allowed to use a tiny bit of Instant Mocha on special occasions. I thought it was so grand to stay over at a friends house so that I could use her mother's Evening in Paris perfume. We never got anything but Avon.

How about CanCan slips? Anyone remember those? Personally I didn't ever wear any but I remember my older sisters having them. I played dress up in them.

This has been a really fun thread. It's brought back many good and some not so good but funny now memories.

lauriejo 09-07-2010 05:49 AM

OMG Circus Peanuts, I forgot all about those! Weren't they awful.

Moon Holiday 09-07-2010 05:51 AM

Ruth, you weren't alone with loving those pop beads. My sister and I had some and I swear I wore mine out by popping them over and over. Wow, thanks for bring back a great memory!
