This could be fun.

It's morning here in Bloomington and we still have power. I am grateful for that. Went to the store yesterday before the crowds got there. The last time we had to weather an ice storm we were living north in Elkhart. It was so devastating to the trees, it looked like a scene from a scifi movie. We gave up after a couple of days without power(being on a well meant we didn't water either)so we came south to be with family.
One daughter still lives up by South Bend but I don't think she could get here this time. It's supposed to be worse between here and there.
Stay warm and safe everyone!

They're predicting 12-18" for us.

My kids are PLANNING on a snow day.

Andy - who is 16 and knows EVERYTHING, says that he predicts a 60% chance of a snow day, and he further states that whever he gives greater-than-50% odds, he is NEVER wrong.

Oh, to be young and so very confident again... :)

rosiel 02-01-2011 05:26 AM

I live on the border of Pt. Huron and Sarnia and we got a skif of snow last night but we are to get hit tonight and into Wed. Good sewing day for Wed. Stay warm

I use mine - just light the burner with a lighter or match.

I keep a Melita drip coffee pot and a tea kettle for heating the water. And in the winter there are usually at least a couple varieties of soups, stes, chili, etc and they have been very welcome when there is no power!

They aren't saying much about icing here, mostly rain changing over to snow. But I am good now - gas range and woodstove! Gas water heater too ;-)

gmaybee 02-01-2011 06:33 AM

If you are talking about lighting a burner to cook something you can light it with a match or lighter. Turn the control to light and put a match or lighter next to it. I can always put a pot of soup or something on when we don't have electricity. You can not use your oven though, that cycles off and on so it won't work.

Might work with the range I have now...my old one would shut off the gas when the electricity was not working..a safety feature allegedly..maybe the industry learned that was not a good thing? Hope I do not have to do that today!!

Getting in the supplies here in Southern Ontario. It's pretty crummy here today, too. I'm supposed to go into work for 7:30 tomorrow morning. Gonna take it one snowy inch at a time. They are warning that the buses might be canceled. Snow day for sure. I'd much rather be watching from my cozy house than from the car, driving to work. :(

I am two hours south of you, and predicted anywhere from 2-3 inches for tonight and 4-6 for Tues and Wed depending on really where in the belt you are.

Surprise for me this morning at 5:30 - was wishful for a twohour delay, and what we got was CLOSED. Only received 3 inches, but apparently the roads are very slick. With the newest prediction of 12 inches today, Districts are erring (?) on the side of caution. May have another day off tomorrow... gee, what to do....

jolo 02-01-2011 07:16 AM

well we got a small amt of snow,it is only about 20 degrees and lots of ice. We were on the very edge of the storm here in Antlers,Ok Still cloudy and dreary out but no precip.Prayers that all stay safe in the bad areas.

I'm also in NEPA. We're getting a lot of snow this morning, but overnight tonight and tomorrow, we're supposed to get accumulating ice! I'm hoping for no power outages, but I do have a gas stove & two gas fireplaces. Stay warm and be safe, everyone!!!

Leota 02-01-2011 08:14 AM

All schools in Oklahoma are closed... we have at our house between 6 - 9 inches but because of the winds, my raised flower beds (18 inches tall) are covered

Marlys 02-01-2011 08:21 AM

We didn't get any more snow, but at 7:00 this morning it was about 22 below zero. Right now (9:30 a.m.) it is 9 below. Downright chilly!!!

dinlauren 02-01-2011 08:35 AM

We got hit with sleet, ice and snow here in Fort Worth. Wind chills in the single digits. Got a day off work to sew, sew, sew..........lol Have a quilty day everyone.

I'm in Southern Minnesota and had the storm yesterday, but it turned out that we only ended up with a little over 2 inches of snow. I shoveled yesterday in the early afternoon and again this morning. My husband is still not recovered from his shoulder replacement so its up to me to do the shoveling. I will be so glad when spring is here, really getting tired of shoveling since I don't want to use the snowblower, kind of scared of it.

Us, too, but I wish we had a generator 'cause every time the weather changes, we lose power....and I can't sew. Ugh!

Ours still works with matches or a portable lighter. We hope that our fireplace will be the same.We have flashlights and candles. The only thing we forgot last time was batteries for the boom-box

tntgranny 02-01-2011 09:48 AM

We live in Chicago area too. Just hope the electric doesn't go out so I can keep sewing. Just think of all I can get done without the guilt of not going to work. I work for a school bus company - no school no work. Sounds good to me.

finchelover 02-01-2011 10:18 AM

We had ice yesterday and my husband said it started snowing about 6 this morning the weather guys say we could get as much as 20 inches but they think that will go south. Good.my kids in Wichita area want the moisture. They only had small amounts of rain and no snow yet.

baglady65 02-01-2011 10:28 AM

We live south of Detroit and expecting 8.8 inches but sleet and ice before! Glad we are not getting 15 inches I could worry about my sewing room roof caving as it was a add on to the house and was a enclosed deck years ago! DH said it will be fine but may take my Bernina 830 out tonight!

On our way down to Bloomington that time we passed convoys of those big orange tree removal trucks heading north.
We are having our second round of freezing precipitation right so I am concerned for the trees here.
I went up to my sewing room for a few hours since we still have power. I thought that was time better spent than cooking.

patski 02-01-2011 11:48 AM

I'm with you in my heart. Hope it isn't as bad as they say. I lived in Chicago and miss friends but not the weather :)

pollyjvan9 02-01-2011 11:51 AM

Well, it's almost Tuesday Feb 1st, 2 o'clock in the afternoon here in Oklahoma City, OK. The blizzard started here last night and the snow has stopped falling but the wind is still howling! I'm very content however eating my chicken noodle soup I just made, 4 quilt blocks I have completed the FMQ on, and reading all the comments on the quilting board. I say, Let It Snow!

honeydew 02-01-2011 12:27 PM

We have been getting it since early this morning. Hard to tell how much we have got so far. The wind is blowing so hard and drifting it. I have cleaned the deck off 3 times so we can get out if need to. So know from that we have had at least 9 inches and it is still coming down. They said on noon news to expect 9 to 15 inches more. Glad we are stocked up on everything.

scrappylady 02-01-2011 01:51 PM

Central Missouri is getting snow now and LOTS OF IT right now. 4:00pm and blizzard like snow, sleet was first and now snow and wind tonight. Our spring break is gone for sure :-(

penski 02-01-2011 01:52 PM

im in Springfield Illinois and am sitting here watching the snow and ice mixture coming down , everything is closed and no one is to be out on the streets after 5 oclock tonight , omg the mailman was just here (3 hours late) and i asked him why he just doesnt go home and he said they were told to stay out till all thee mail was delivered!! the surrounding little towns are with out power and ours are blinking !! they said the wind is so bad the wires are banging into other wires and the poles and are knocking the power out , i think this is going to be a longggg nite

jad1044 02-01-2011 01:52 PM

horizontal near whiteout here! yuck to winter!

fink9 02-01-2011 02:51 PM

I am 100 miles south of Chicago. Won't be going anywhere today or tomorrow. Our daughter was suppose to leave on her honeymoon Thursday morning from Chicago. That is canceled. Not sure when she will be going. Hopefully Friday morning.

BabyCakes 02-01-2011 03:59 PM

It is here .
Wisconsin

redvette54 02-01-2011 04:10 PM

Started snowing here in Michigan about an hour ago. If the power doesn't go out, I have lots of things to work on.

Tink's Mom 02-01-2011 04:26 PM

I may be off the computer for the duration...power keeps flickering...

Polly606 02-01-2011 04:44 PM

I machine basted a king size quilt today. If we loose power in Cnetral Pa. I can hand quilt the binding.

sandilee 02-01-2011 04:49 PM

3 days of wicked weather here. The storm is winding down here and moving on to the east. So far we have 3" of sleet/ice on the pavements. Blizzard conditions tonight thru tomorrow. I want SUMMER!

goldendog55 02-01-2011 05:14 PM

Would you all like to come visit me for a while? We live on the ocean and our crocuses are blooming and the daffs and tulips are up! I'll save room for you in my living room-just let me know!

dmackey 02-01-2011 05:32 PM

That mid-west storm is on it's way to New England and we will see it start in the wee hours of Wednesday for a 24 hour duration. We had a storm today that put another 10" on top of the 3' that is already on the lawn. The storm tonight will bring about 18" more, so we are technically buried. At least I will be getting all snow, but about 30 miles south of here, they are going to get sleet and freezing rain.

I made a quilt top this past weekend, put the borders on today, and am cutting out another quilt tonight, so I can sew all day tomorrow and watch the snow come down. I'm not attempting to go anywhere and that includes work!

Diane
