I take my meds at night so that's not the issue. I was told that water doesn't affect the fasting tests I take, so I always have some, because it is hard to get a needle in me anyway and being dehydrated makes it worse.

Ask doctor.

I was told the fasting tests would be better with 12 hours between the last meal and the test. I can drink water and take a snack with me so I'm not too weak afterwards.

In fact, that's what I'm doing right now, waiting for another quarter hour or so till I can leave for a blood test, the first one since 2005. Finally getting around to having things checked, since I pay every month a bundle to Blue Shield, thought I might get some use from it.

Just had blood drawn (thyroid and cholesterol) yesterday and my doc said I could take the pills before hand.

Please ask your doctor about this. Also ask if you can drink fluids/water before any blood test. Most blood tests require fasting, and have nothing to do with fluid intake.

If you're allowed to drink water, drink a lot of it (at least 2 glasses) about one hour before your blood draw! You'd be amazed at how many tests still allow you to drink water. It's so much easier to perform blood tests on well hydrated patients!!!

DH has had terrible times when he's not hydrated. He's been stuck like a pincushion cause the arteries roll away from the needle. The staff eventually calls for the most experienced person on duty who gets it right away.
