A flower for all of your hard work. It's most appreciated. I can add nothing new to what's already been said. Just "Thank you!"

Thank you!

In pondering this further, is it possible that those banned made the deletions because they felt a strong need to protect their photos--or whatever it is they deleted? When I read the post about copyright, my first instinct was to delete any photos I felt were good enough to sell some day--ones I wanted to protect from any loss of copyright possibilities. And since the wording is changed now--wouldn't that solve the deleting issue? :?:

Yes--the deletions caused some interruptions in conversations, however, as a photographer, I can 100% understand why the deletions were made--based on the wording of the policy.

It's a fine line to want to share what one considers a "great shot" (none of mine are quilt related, yet) but to be nervous to display it anywhere on any site for fear of others using the photo--not an administrator necessarily (they are way too busy  ), any forum member or one wandering onto the site can get it, copy it, use it. Folks use them for wallpaper...projects... etc.

Now that a change has been made--I wonder if everything can start anew with everybody back?

Or maybe there's something I don't know--information I'm missing that makes that awkward?

Just a thought. Just trying to sort it all out from this end.

Thanks for listening.

PS Yvonne--that photo makes my eyes open in awe. :D

Shadow Dancer 01-24-2009 07:16 AM

I would suggest that if you want to share pictures that you might sell in the future, put a water mark on them. Or put them up in a low dbi (50 dbi, no more than 72 dbi) and make the picture small, 2.5X3.5 inches for example.

My husband is a photographer and that's what he does with his shots he has on his website. There are ways to protect pictures that you want to share, but don't want anyone saving. :)

It would be better simply to contact the administration directly and privately to resolve any of the concerns.

A legal matter should be decided calmly and privately, not by trying to stir up trouble in public. Such approach never ends well. Not on a message board, and not anywhere else. We are all adults here, and should understand that.

Which leads me to believe that the people who started it, didn't really care about the issue as much as they wanted to cause trouble and have some "fun", either out of spite or just by character.

It's unfortunate that some other members gave into the fear mongering spread by a couple of users here. And instead of waiting for my response, they proceeded disrupting the board.

Yes--the deletions caused some interruptions in conversations
Over 2,000 posts were lost in total because of the topics that ended up with "deleted" all over them.

Let's put this into perspective. With 15 posts per page, that's at least 133 pages on this website that were basically defaced.

And keep in mind, 90% of so of the posts that I had to remove were other people's posts. They belonged to the topics that had been turned into nonsense by such actions. This is the main issue here.

I don't know of any other community website out there that would let a group of people organize a disruption and then get away with it as if nothing happened.

Now that a change has been made--I wonder if everything can start anew with everybody back?
I'm looking into it. Some users will be let back in if they want to. But not all of them.

Well said!

I considered that, but I felt a need to hear from the members as well...

sorry.

i would sentence you to 30 lashes with a wet noodle, but i already ate the soup for lunch and don't want to make more today. 8)

I'm a naive, Polly Anna, optimistic soul--but I read the post and never felt, never saw that. Just my opinion.

I understand an admin has to do what an admin has to do.

Knot Sew 01-24-2009 10:10 AM

Anything you put on the internet is fair game. Don't post anything that you don't want people copying. I think there will be enough to look at. This way this doesn't happen...

I just want to add I did not see or read any of it. I was not here and don't know who all the people were....just know this makes it bad for the nice majority

sewmuch 01-24-2009 10:20 AM

Same here, Ruth, I know nothing about what went on :!:

MsSage 01-24-2009 02:25 PM

barnbum do you have photoshop atleast 7? or painshop pro?
you can make your own watermark as simple as your name or nick. If you need help I can send you a link to a site that will walk you through making your watermark.
I have an embeded watermark that I can bring out if there is an issue with copywrite.

As for the rest I saw some of what happened but I dont know the whole story so I will reserve judgement. Admin did as he felt was nessary to preserve the board and I will support his decision. I am learning in real world there is alot going on behind the scenes that I dont know and I need to hold my tounge and judgement.

barnbum 01-24-2009 02:35 PM

MsSage--I do have PS7--and have tried the watermarks--just haven't worked out which to use. It's a bit complicated. I will definitely be using them anywhere I post photos, but to be honest, it's easier to just not post the "good" ones.

All I know is part of our family is gone because they felt they needed to protect what is theirs... and that some who had many deleted posts are still here. Those who deleted love(d) this place as much as we do.

I'm a busy woman--I don't have a lot of time to worry about forum issues, but after seeing the trouble forums could have on the horse forum--I found this trouble free place refreshing. In addition, I understand I could just as easily have been banned for removing photos, and wondered how I felt about that. I didn't want to just agree with whomever--I wanted to uncover the facts.

I just want to know...we're family.

Cathy M 01-24-2009 03:50 PM

Egads... thank God I am too tech stupid to be doing deleting and editing :) :) :) :) :) :) See... my theory is held up again- God does bless idiots hahahahahaha....

live2teach 01-24-2009 06:24 PM

Wow...I guess a lot has happened since I've been away...

Tink's Mom 01-24-2009 08:55 PM

Wow!!! I don't know what I missed, but I'm glad it's cleared up. I can bearly add pictures to a post. Some people abuseing the forum, well at least I know why I was confused by a couple posts.
Thank you for all of your hard work.

I'm thinking about setting up some sort of an exception for people organizing the swaps. So that those people would be able to edit their posts.

Ah, yes. I'm among the worst at editing for typos and such after a post has been already made. I've read your response to that in an earlier post. Someone else pointed out we should use the "Preview" button first. Excellent idea.
I am only kinda lost, but in another sense, if we don't know, it probably doesn't concern directly.

OK...I'm one of the swap-hosters this would/could concern. From more of the posts that have been made, I THINK this has been settled for swap-hosters. HOPEFULLY. IF not, the easiest solution for when swap partners are assigned, is for a new thread. It can be looked at from different angles. Just because things have to be done differently don't mean they are wrong. Could turn out for the better sometimes. ?? Either way, K, thanks for all that you do. As many have said before, this board has been a blessing to me. I've made so many needed friends here. There are many thanks due, also, to many, many more members. You all know who you are. ;)

And, K, thanks for finally posting a photo of yourself! You were so mysterious there for a while! I see why you might've been reluctant to do so, as you didn't want all these quilters throwing their, ah, "threads" on-stage to you! LOL! Kinda Rob Lowe-ish, I think, and that is a mighty fine compliment! :D

SORRY there was any problem to begin with, but I always try to look on the positive side....it's a happy place to be!

patricej 01-25-2009 04:04 AM

the easiest solution to an editing need is to send me a pm. i handle all requests within 24 hours. faster if they're waiting for me when i get up in the morning. :-)

i'll risk beating the poor dead horse by pointing out ONCE AGAIN that EVERY one of the worst posts [now deleted, of course] about copyright issues were from new or newish members accusing Admin of some devious plot to steal their work to sell as his own. THAT WAS NEVER EVER GOING TO HAPPEN. I tried to tell them that. Shadow tried to tell them that. Admin tried to tell them that.

Instead of calming down and shutting up about it, they continued their reckless slander and disruption of threads by editing out their posts, spewing their unfounded and hateful remarks in chats, and generally doing everything they could to keep the turmoil going. I've been with the board since the beginning. I have never seen things get so ugly so fast, and for so long. That's why those very few are still banned, and that is why I hope they are never allowed back.

All anybody ever has to do is ask beforehand if they're unsure whether or not they should share something.

And, for the record, an ironic fact is that I was the first person ever to get my wrist slapped for an accidental copyright violation. I took the time to do a little research so I'd know how to avoid it from that day on. It was that simple to fix. :?

can we please now put this baby to bed and get back to the friendly fun?

gcathie 01-25-2009 04:08 AM

I know this is true PatriceJ has helped me out more than once....:-) Thank you Patrice

Is that why, when I go to look at older messages posted (for even myself!) there are pages missing? Or are they just deleted to save space on what I am sure is a very busy server?

zyxquilts 01-25-2009 05:18 PM

Here I am on page 7 already! And I'd like to add my own great BIG "thank you!!!" to Admin K, PatriceJ & Shadow Dancer. You all are doing a fabulous job with this Board & the chat. Thank you THANK You THANK YOU!!! Y'all are awesome! :D

QuiltinLee 01-25-2009 05:35 PM

Okay, maybe I'm the idiot here but I would think that if you're so concerned about losing your copyrighted work or was afraid that someone was going to copy your ideas or work, wouldn't the simple answer be NOT to post it?

Celeste 01-25-2009 06:44 PM

OOPS! I forgot to thank you for the board and all the friendships and "family" I have gained!

I feel lucky to have found this board. The people who take the time to read posts, respond and pass along wonderful information and pictures have become a valuable part of my quilting experience. Thanks to all who watch out for us.

(I'm used to the 20-minute edit rule from a forum I deal with for work, but will try to be better at using that handy-dandy "Preview" button in the future.)

well, as usual, have learned a lot from this thread. I have never used the 'preview' button, DUH...but that would help me, to correct, typos.
I'm in complete agreement as to all that this board provides, and appreciate all the hard work that goes into that. I used to be an assistant manager on a group, and there is a lot of work that goes on, that ppl are usually not aware of. I am also aware, that most ppl that come to a site like this, have good intentions, but ppl are human, and sometimes they get 'bent' over something...there are reasonable ways to solve problems, and the first is communication.
I've never seen anything from admin., Patrice or Shadow, but willingness to help with any reasonable request. You have to at least talk to them and give them a chance. It's the least any of us can do, for all that we get in return. We are the lucky ones!
Thanks admin, and although I goof around a bit, bc I like a humorous atmosphere at times, I also do it, to help ppl who might not be having their best day. I need positivity to be able to create. I may tease, or poke fun, but I think, ppl know when that is where you are coming from. I try to be somewhat aware that 'my target' lol, knows me, and knows that it is with love.
Quilters, like all creative ppl, have a tendency to be a bit emotional at times, and when something happens, it is good, to go take a break, and try to look at it from another perspective. Don't be afraid to pm somebody and ask...what did you mean, ....or what's up with that?...I don't think anybody here, that really belongs here, is going to bite.
Although I will say, LOL...that as good looking as you are admin, you are the top guy, and at times when I see your pic...I have jumped! It's just me, I don't see many guys, that nice looking, often, LOL!!!

I think this statement fits me, as well. I sometimes, do things, out of a childlike ignorance or curiosity, not meaning, (and not foreseeing),...any cause and/or effect from my actions.
Karla, not re-interpreting your statement, just borrowing your phrase, here, bc it fits me...sometimes, I just plain out, unwittingly, step in it, a little.
If I ever have, done anything, and anyone was affected, please accept my humblest apologies, and oops! at any faux pas. I love you guys!!! :D

editing: didn't mean to drag up an old post.
Was looking around, and although I did notice the dates, thought that when I got to the end, it would have replies that were current...nope, just mine. That's what I mean, about ignorantly, naively, stepping into it. oops!...but come on, ya gotta love me, i always mean well!!! :P

Glad you brought it up, now I can thank all the hard work that goes into keeping this board going. I have had to call on admin when I made a boo-boo and he has always been there and all the others are super. I live in the boonies of NC and this board is my quilting guild! :D :D :D

Quiltincrazy, you are the Best!

Thank you for the heads-up. I read the rules before registering and didn't think of all the ways things could go amuck. I'm new and don't want to disturb the flow. And, like all the others, appreciate the opportunity to learn from others and contribute. Thanks again.

Thank you for the update! This is an awesome sight! New people and new Quilt Patters! It is truly a website like a dream! :)

oh ninnie, I just looove you, too! you couldn't have possibly known what the past 24 hours has been like for me and my family. We had a full blown l and d emergency with my 13 month old grandbaby last night! I had nightmares all night long, that I was her and hubby had to rush me for help...geesh...just managed to get on here, bc pc connections have been acting up a lot, and you tell me I am the best,...well, right back atcha, babe. You just made my day! :D
BTW, baby is fine now. got meds for a few days, but back to curtain climbing and digging canned goods out of cabinets...cute as ever! :D

tslowery 04-23-2009 06:49 PM

I am very new here and I am not sure about what problems there were. Hope I do not do anything inappropriate. Thanks for your time and effort and I have enjoyed every minute I have spent here on the board. Thanks again to everyone who is working hard so that we can have this place to learn and share most of all to make friends.....

littlehud...your not imagining anything. This is an old thread. Want the whole truth, and nothing but? (of course, lol, you do  )...I was on yesterday, waiting for some fabrics to wash, and just clicking around, clicked on admin's pic, bc he is mysterious, an enigma, and sometimes, things like that make me nervous, so I thought if I became more familiar with different aspects of this board, it would help me in a lot of ways.
anywho, I came upon this thread, that I had NEVER knew existed. It was very interesting, and although talked about some old stuff, that I did know a smattering about, it was very complimentary as a whole, so I kept reading. Learned quite a bit, about different perspectives, and the rest you probably read. When I got to the end, and realized it was an OLD post, my first reaction was, "oh know, I have goofed, and will probably upset some ppl for bringing it back up."
I thought about it today, and just shrugged, bc my feeling is, although SOME stuff needs to be addressed privately, SOME also needs to be aired openly, so there are less chances of a future reoccurence of misunderstandings. Not saying all behaviors are misunderstandings. Sometimes ppl actually do mean spirited things. Not saying I have any knowledge of anything like that here. I know nuffin, nuffin, nuffin....(where's that one from? lol)...we are all grownups, arent we? (meaning, here on this board), so, ok, info is back out here again...we can handle it. Openness makes for more trust, and I think ppl can tell I am open.

Quiltncrazy, I have to tell you your posts always make me smile.

littlehud 04-23-2009 07:10 PM

Thanks. I, too, learned a lot when all this happened. This is the first time I joined a site like this and was shocked that people would misuse (either deliberately or other wise ) such a wonderful and informative forum. My respect for the the administrator and our two monitors grew by leaps and bounds. They contained the problem quickly and got us back on our happy quilting way in no time. Thanks again for your answer to my question. I am glad I asked. :D :D
