On top of that you didn't have to pump your own gas, plus the gas station attendant checked your oil and washed your windows.

Unfortunatly I also remember when 50 cents would go a long, long way. 27 cents a gal. wow. What fun we had when we pooled our change to get gas to run on.

I pulled into the SERVICE station once and asked for $5 worth of gas - just like my dad did. The guy stopped at less than that. When I told him I'd asked for $5 he said, "well, little lady, I can pour the rest of it on the ground, but your tank is full!".

Another time I scrounged in the bottom of my purse and pulled in with an EMPTY tank. Asked for 25 cents worth of gas - would have gotten almost a gallon. I panicked when the little numbers rolled past 25 cents and got out and told the man, "But I only have a quarter!" He stopped it at a gallon - maybe 28 - 32 cents and said, "Yep, and I only have daughters. This'll get you home."

Ah the good old days!

When put into perspective, we find: while in 1958 we were paying 25-cents per gallon for gas, our average income was under $4,000 per year, with home sales averaging at $12,500. Today, the average cost of gas is about $4, the average income is about $50,000 and the average home sells for about $264,000. I'd still rather live in today's world with today's prices and today's wonderful time savers (especially in regards to quilting).

I must be older the dirt. I can remember when gas was .21 and then came the gas wars. Bought gas for .17 a gal.

LOL - I'm so old I invented dirt - but I can remember 9 - 11 cents a gallon & inner tube tires - lol - & every well equipped glove box had a patch kit.

We all used to throw in a nickel or dime to go in the gas tank when I was in high school. We drove around all night. And gas was 29 cents a gallon. Man... I wish.

Gas is $4.29 a gal today in far No. California. :(

I was upset when the price went up to 30 cents. I remember my Mom pulling into a station and asking for 5 gallons. Now it would cost close to $30 for what cost pennies.

I remember $0.25. I already had my 3 kids, and had a job as a public health nurse. $3.00 would fill my VW Bug and keep me going for a week!
