It's that time of year again when AMC, Syfy, and TCM will be running their Halloween movie marathons. I am a sucker for scary movies and love watching stories about ghosts and haunted houses. I can't say that I have a favorite movie but I was wondering if you guys have a favorite scary movie?

Airwick156 10-17-2011 09:00 AM

Nope Not Me. I don't watch Scary Movies as I am a chicken and I have nightmares. So I don't watch any scary movie.

gramajo 10-17-2011 09:04 AM

Don't like 'em. I rented Silence of the Lambs & watched about 20 minutes. Too scared to watch the rest.
I must have been 12/13 yo when House of Wax came out. It was the 1st 3D movie I'd seen. Had nightmares about it for months. I can still see the bad guy swinging out towards me. lol

QuiltnNan 10-17-2011 09:10 AM

not me either. i don't like scary movies

leatheflea 10-17-2011 09:14 AM

I love em! I also like to watch the ghost story shows. However I dont like really bloody movies, I think you can scare the heck out of me without getting gross. Dont have any faves, but if my choices are tear jerker or scary theres no question scary, who wants to cry?

IAmCatOwned 10-17-2011 09:14 AM

Favorite scary movies: The Thing (Kurt Russell), Halloween (1st one), Aliens, Jaws, and Dracula (with Frank Langella).

There are, of course, lots of great horror movies but these are my top 5 (and the only ones I bought the DVDs for). The only reason I don't have Hitchcock movies on this list is because his are more psychological thrillers than today's horror. Exorcist 3 would fall in similar to his style (you don't actually see anybody die).

Just as scary are old horror radio programs that you can get for free as podcasts at Itunes. Lights Out has some of the spookiest stories!

For less scary (more appropriate for kids), my favorite is Hocus Pocus (Disney).

Murphy 10-17-2011 09:19 AM

I like Hocus Pocus, Casper, Twitches, etc. (these kind of not so scary movies) - smile.

ptquilts 10-17-2011 10:11 AM

I guess I am getting too old - "scary" movies don't really scare me any more. Just got through watching Scream 1, 2, and 3 (long story - don't ask!!) - I just thought they were stupid.
And I hate violent/gory movies - I have to turn away.

I do like psychological thrillers - it's just the fantasy/supernatural part that I can't get into.

Cyn 10-17-2011 10:12 AM

I don't like to be scared. I think reading the paper and looking at our investments is scary enough!

Thanks for the tip on the radio shows! I will definitely have to check that out.
And I agree that "slasher" movies do not interest me at all. I guess that would fall more under the "horror" category.
I did think of a recent scary movie that I thought was great-the Paranormal Activity series. Saw 1 and 2 and can't wait to see 3!

hobbykat1955 10-17-2011 11:00 AM

House on Haunted Hill...Vincent Price

dreamboat 10-17-2011 11:05 AM

no scary movies for me.

Chris Little 10-17-2011 11:05 AM

Love to watch Ghost Adventure with Zak, Aaron and Nick... tee hee think they are cuties... no nightmares here ;-)

valsma 10-17-2011 11:14 AM

Yes, and befitting the season it is the original Halloween. I remember the first time I saw that movie and where. What a fun night that was.

I love this time of year to because they play all the haunted hotel/house/graveyard shows on the travel channel and history channels. Love them.

And like the last few years I will be watching online the Ghost Hunters live Halloween special. I hope they tell their guest to shut up so we can hear something if it happens.

Got to thinking about another movie that is a Halloween favorite to watch while waiting on those little ghost and goblins to knock on the door, Rocky Horror Picture Show. Not scarey, a bit twisted but fun every time. Someday even if i'm really old i'm going to a midnight showing. I haven't been able to get tickets and I have tried. They sell out so fast.

Cheri_J 10-17-2011 11:36 AM

I love the "monster" movies from the 40s and 50s. The Creature from the Black Lagoon is my all time favorite.

For current movies, the SYFY channel doesn't show Mansquito often enough. The worse the acting, the better.

Zhillslady 10-17-2011 11:48 AM

the original jeepers creepers and original Halloween. You can't beat a classic that includes a plot. The newer ones are just hack and slash which is ok but I like a story line.

Glassquilt 10-17-2011 11:54 AM

I enjoy the Disney type and the old horror movies. The ones that leave scary stuff to the viewer imagination.
I tend to critique the special effects and then tear the movie apart.

jeanne307 10-17-2011 12:29 PM

Wow what a great thread... I would have to say some of my faves are Halloween, Halloween H20, Paranormal Activity 1 and 2, Fright night, Salems Lot, The Shining, and pretty much anything else by Stephen King. Oh and Legion is a good movie... and I dont know if it is just me or what but I love The Grindhouse series of movies...

Can't wait to see Paranormal Activity 3... although my hubby says he is not going to go with me... trying to talk my sister and nephew into going with me.

Edited to add: I love Ghost Hunters and Paranormal Witness... watch these every week all year long lol... although my mom and dad live in a haunted house so I don't go to those anymore lol

3incollege 10-17-2011 02:34 PM

love scary movies!! Along time ago I watched "Wait Until Dark" at the movies. I think that is my favorite.

WMUTeach 10-18-2011 04:20 AM

No scary ones for me. I avoid them and look for the sweet sappy ones. We each have our own cups of tea, right?

cherrio 10-18-2011 04:28 AM

love to read a good "who dun it" mystery and that is as scary as I wanna get. love Hocus Pocus too!

Too funny but so true!!

2Chuckie2 10-18-2011 04:45 AM

Although there have been good scary movies since, I remember going with all my friends to see Psycho when it came out in the 60's. We all loved it being scared with our boyfriends!!

gigi4419 10-18-2011 04:51 AM

Vincent Price movie!

quilter68 10-18-2011 05:16 AM

I don't even watch 'Criminal Minds' any more. Can't read Stephen King- too scary. But I will travel anywhere by myself.

BTW- Does anyone remember"The Beast With Five Fingers".

bodie358 10-18-2011 05:20 AM

Poltergeist

DITTO!!!!!!!!!!!!

boomer47 10-18-2011 05:35 AM

Oh, my favorite scary movie is "The Omen" - the original with Gregory Peck! Then there is "Wait Until Dark" with Audry Hepburn.

crafty3236 10-18-2011 05:43 AM

I can't wait for this one!!!

DebbieJJ 10-18-2011 06:03 AM

I love to watch scary movies, only not when I'm alone! The only one I refuse to watch again is The Exorcist!

macygma 10-18-2011 06:31 AM

boy, I don't know.....my girls watched them and I "Supervised". I kinda like the "Scream" series because they are so fake it's hilarious.

However, the new show "American Horror Story" is really spooky!!!!!

mhansen6 10-18-2011 06:50 AM

I don't have much time to watch movies. When I do take the time it will not be scary. I hate scary movies. I have nightmares when I watch them.

Quiltbeagle 10-18-2011 07:22 AM

ANY movie with stuffed dolls that move on their own will scare the stuffing out of me (no pun intended) like in the Tommyknockers. If the doll happens to be a clown (Poltergeist) I'll be having even more nightmares! The original Puppetmaster is just too CREEPY with those things wandering around....

Tinabug 10-18-2011 08:29 AM

I love scary movies and sci-fi. I just watched The Thing last night. COOL. I loved all the new Mummy films. The Rock is pretty cool too. No more date movies, or chick flicks for me. Give me the action, drama, and comedy.

Sunflower Girl 10-18-2011 08:34 AM

I like spooky movies too! Also like Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventures, etc. Don't like bloody, just spooky. Always have, guess I always will! Maybe it's the mystery?

Chasing Hawk 10-18-2011 08:49 AM

I haven't seen anything that could possibly be called a scary movie in years.

Last good one was the black and white version of the Living Dead.

My husband says......The Thing and Aliens.

How else could I have learned how to keep vampires and werewolves away if it were not for scary movies? Garlic and crosses made out of twigs are absolute necessities! I don't watch things like Silence of the Lambs, but black and white Lon Chaney and Bela Lugosi movies still can't be beat! On the other hand, I loved Jurassic Park, which is nothing other than a reincarnation of the Frankenstein genre. froggyintexas

I take it you wouldn't want to sit down and watch Chucky or Bride of Chucky. I get kinda creeped out by doll movies to.
I even have trouble watching IT by Steven King. That man has a twisted mind. Tommyknockers is one I cannot sit all the way through. The DH is a huge SK fan. Everytime one of his books come out or turns into a movie he is watching or reading.

I have only one movie I refuse to watch because it scares the living daylights our of me and that is Entity. Saw that movie once years ago and couldn't take a shower in an enclosed shower for years. Even now it creeps me out to use a glass enclosed show. Shower scene in Phsyco didn't scare me as much as this one did.
Most horror movies I try to avoid because I don't care for them much.

When I was 11 years old, I watched "Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein" with my Mom. Scared me to death. Now whenever I see it, I get a real kick out of it. I just didn't appreciate the humor way back then. I do now.
