Yuck! I hate scorpions with a passion. I keep finding them in my house. I just found a live one in my sewing room. I can deal with spiders, roaches, flies anything but scorpions. And the bummer part, I just had the house sprayed last week....I guess they are trying to beat the heat just like the rest of us. 8-)

RatherB Quilting 08-13-2010 12:29 PM

One more reason I will stay up North!! ;)

cjomomma 08-13-2010 12:45 PM

OH Yuck! scorpions and spiders!! :XD:

cattailsquilts 08-13-2010 12:48 PM

Get a cat! I hate scorpions, my cats keep bringing me dead ones. I guess they want me to be proud of them?

jackkip 08-13-2010 12:52 PM

spiders never bother me. But this particular scorpion was laying on the floor. Thought it was dead. Went to scoop it up and he started to move....Yuck!

This is about the 5th one we have found in the house in the last month. My DD had one in her shower. She didn't realize it unitl she was inside the shower. Needless to say she came out screaming.

MinnieKat 08-13-2010 01:35 PM

I have never seen a scorpion -- but I really hate spiders!!

nativetexan 08-13-2010 01:41 PM

ah,one thing i don't miss about Houston. that and roaches. tree roaches too!

martha jo 08-13-2010 01:41 PM

I have never found them in the house until this year. They are even in the flowerbeds. They said it was all the rain we had - who knows. Have sprayed outside the house and inside. Have found two petrified in the dryer and still intact. Yuck!

SC 08-13-2010 01:57 PM

I've always thought scorpions were evil looking little creatures! Just plain evil looking!

tmw 08-13-2010 01:58 PM

get yourself some sticky boards and put around in places , likes doors and windows, get them at stores like the home depot or lowes. we catch all kinds of things, and now its the big, and i mean big, transulas [sp] i have bad dreams about these things!!!!

Chele 08-13-2010 02:17 PM

Ick, I feel ya. I've never seen a scorpion in Florida, but I know we have them. On the other hand, I have snakes everywhere. They're gonna give me a heart attack. Stupid snakes.

GrammaNan 08-13-2010 02:43 PM

I feel for you. I lived in southern New Mexico for a few years and we found them everywhere, even in the washing machine. We had centipedes too and roaches We learned to keep our clothes hung up and turned our shoes upside down at night. Hope they leave soon.

jackkip 08-13-2010 03:01 PM

I have seen one or two in the past, but not this many. The Bug guy told me it was because we had so much rain. He said they were trying to get to higher ground. But then when it is dry, he says that they are looking for water :-P I just wish they would stay outside......

AnnaK 08-13-2010 03:01 PM

The spraying might have brought them indoors. Last year my husband and I checked into a hotel in AZ and found a very lethargic black widow spider on the bed. We were told that they had just had the place sprayed. I think it came indoors to die.

Ditter43 08-13-2010 03:25 PM

We used to have a lot of scorpions untill we got rid of the pine trees near the house. I was told the live under the bark.....I killed one the other day, the first one I have seen in the house in quite a while. :?

justwannaquilt 08-13-2010 05:20 PM

I have a funny story to tell ya I'll keep it short. lol

My dad went out of town for work, they flew down to El Paso from Missouri, a guy from the Co. picked them up at the air port and on the way to their hotel he was telling them about insects of the region. lol Of course scorpions were on the list. Well my dad has always had long hair and he always kept it pulled back in a ponytail at the nape of his neck so he could wear a welding helmet and it didn't get in the way, even to bed he wears it like this. Anyways, that night he JUMPS out of bed flipping out. He swore he was being stung, really it was just his ponytail pulling a couple pieces of hair right on the neck line. After two weeks of being in El Paso he came home and cut all his hair off.

CarrieAnne 08-13-2010 05:25 PM

Icky!!!!

Moonpi 08-13-2010 05:27 PM

One of those nasty buggers nailed me over a year ago and I still have a scar! I could not believe how bad I hurt over that evil thing!

bjnicholson 08-13-2010 05:31 PM

Guys! You giving me the willies here!!! We only have a little brown mouse that's claimed the kitchen for his own pantry. He's a brazen little thing. My son set out the sticky trap for him and he ate the bits of nuts out of the MIDDLE without even touching the goo. Mike's ready to get the bb gun out. I don't know which I'm more afraid of, the mouse or the "great white hunter"!

Chele 08-13-2010 05:45 PM

Funny how we're all freaked out by different things. A mouse in my house? I'd have to move! I've had a snake in here and that was bad enough. A mouse would send me over the edge. And a rat, just shoot me now. I hate being a city girl! We should all remember we're bigger and can buy pesticides or call exterminators. We're tough quilters! LOL!

CoyoteQuilts 08-13-2010 05:55 PM

I have been blessed. I have lived in AZ for 16 years now and never seen a wild scorpion! I had to go to the zoo to see one right after we moved here. Now, my DD when she lived here had dead ones drop onto her stove from the fan several times. YUCK!

Favorite Fabrics 08-13-2010 06:20 PM

I just saw scorpions for the first time this month, on a church mission trip to Nicaragua.

I was told that the ones in Nicaragua are not venomous so if you get stung, it's rather like a bee or wasp sting: unpleasant, but you get over it.

But... aren't some scorpions venomous? Where do THOSE ones live?

I have gotten use to the mice and rats. I have a cat that is quite the hunter and a doggie door. Needless to say the two don't always work to my advantage. My cat brings me prizes about once a month. Usually alive and usually wanting to escape captivity! She brings them in and drops them and is done with them. Leaves me to get them out of the house. She will find a high perch and you can almost see her laughing at my antics of getting them outside. My favorite time was the night my DH resorted to throwing Beanie Babies at a Rat. He was happy that he finally found a good reason to have all of the beanies still stored under the bed :-P

The one that got me was venomous. I swelled up like a D cup bra, and within days, the tissue began to die off. Despite tea tree oil, first aid cream, and Benedryl, it hurt a LOT! It took months to recover. Don't know what would have happened if I had insurance and would've been able to see a doctor.

We think the one that got me was a wood scorpion, small but powerful. Since I had never been exposed before, my body didn't know what to do with the poison.

wvdek 08-14-2010 06:24 AM

Oh geez. I think I would scream too if had one in the shower. Would prpbably blow the shower to smithereens using the 357 to blow it away...

Beth33 08-14-2010 06:38 AM

I don't think we have them here, and would much rather shovel snow LOL

Get some peppermint oil and place a few drops on a cotton ball or piece of paper towel. You will never see him again.

littlehud 08-14-2010 08:07 AM

Yikes. I'm staying in the midwest. Just spiders here.

OMG where do you live that you get tarantula's in your house? Yikes that would put me over the edge to find one of those massive hairy buggers. I am no fan of scorpians either. Thankfully they don't live here but I saw them when I used to live in Florida. You can have Florida! Too many bugs and venomous things there for me. Too hot humid and flat too.

quiltluvr 08-14-2010 09:12 AM

We had two in the house. One was little. I saw it before the dogs did.

Funny story: (Well, I'd make it as funny as it was but it'd take all day to type it! LOL)

Sometime later I was watching TV by myself and saw something on the wall, almost to the ceiling. It was a big one! I called my hubby and grown son down to see it. I wanted a closer look. All I had was a styro cup and cooking tongs. I did get it (sweaty palms and all) and boy was that thing trying to sting the tongs. I put it in the cup but the darn thing jumped out and hid again real good. I put something on my bare feet before looking for it. Also put the dog in another room just in case. We were like Keystone Cops and decided to vac it up. My son emptied the dirt cup and handed everything to me. We all get in position, turn the vac on and I aim the hose to get it but it's not going in! Ends up the dirt cup wasn't locked in properly so not enough suction. We finally get it and neither my husband or son wants to empty the cup. We all three crowd into the downstairs bathroom to pay our final respects. I put on an oven mitt, get the dirt cup and dump it in the toilet. The water brought it back to "life" and it starts stinging the bowl. Flushed it away.

I was creeped out by the whole thing for a few weeks after. Now the house we're in is all tile floors and I watch real close and shake out my slippers before putting them on.

Luv Quilts and Cats 08-14-2010 09:33 AM

No Scorpians in New Hampshire, unless some one has one as a pet. But we do have all kinds of spiders. I don't like spiders. Or daddy longlegs. They are coming in the house looking for water and something to eat.

bjnicholson 08-14-2010 10:49 AM

Thanks Gramma Nan! We'll try anything LOL...

Get a black light if you are really worried about spotting scorpions. They glow (no matter what the color of the scorpion) in the UV light. We get them from time to time. They really aren't particulary aggressive (they aren't out there hunting you) but make sure you shake your shoes out before shoving in your feet. Scorpions really don't like being stepped on.

harley 08-15-2010 03:04 AM

I jumped in my water bed in Smith ville Tenn. and one bit me right below the knee.i knew that i wasn't going to die 'because earlier that week my dog got bit on the nose. they seem to like moist or cool at night, the one that got my dog was hiding on the back porch under my mop. good luck, oh i put a wet towel on the porch and very slowly picked up and there was another one , one good work boot to the job, :hunf: then there was no more.

Lyn 08-15-2010 04:00 AM

OMG makes me think of when we lived in El Paso in the mountains. Kids would put their damp towels on the grass and several scorpions would get on. One night there was an eclipse of the moon. Where we lived was beautiful except for the critters. My husband and I sat outside in chairs to watch the moon come up over the mountain and slowly disappear. We had a glass of champagne and each others feet in our laps.

finch 08-15-2010 04:00 AM

I was hanging something out on the line one day and I felt something go up my pants leg.I shook my pants and out fell a scorpion!!I almost died right there.I hear they go up and down like a sewing machine needle when they bite you.Is this true??

Linda1 08-15-2010 07:31 AM

We lived in Killeen, Tx. for three years and I was not used to tarantulas or scorpions. I asked at WalMart if there was some kind of spray I could use to keep them out of the house ane the man told me the only thing that worked was a big foot.
