The other night after everyone was in bed and asleep (except me, of course) I desided this is the perfect time to sew. No interruptions. Don't you love this part of the day?

Now, I don't know about you, but to me it seems that in the dark hours of the night the house has more strange sounds rattling around than during the day light hours.
Well, I know the doors are locked, my hubby is home (asleep however) and my dogs are next to me. So I just ignore the creepiness.

This one particular night the winds were really kicking up it's heels. I was in the sewing room at the cutting table and behind me on another table about four feet away is where the sewing machine sets. This works out well for me "cause it gives me some exercise going back and forth from table to table.

As I am at the cutting table fussing with some fabric getting it ready to stitch I hear a strange noise. One that was not wind related, at least I didn't think so. It was hard to locate the origin because the sound was very muted.
This sound would stop then start then stop again. Finally I pin pointed the source, it was coming from the sewing machine. It was something like RRrrrrrRrrrrrrrRRRRRrrrrrrrr.

At this point I truned the machine off, counted to 10 (no particular reasons for the 10, seemed like a good idea at the time) then turned it back on. The same sound again...so I repeted the off, count and on but, this action did not change anything. I figured it must have something to do with the winds and power surges althought I do have surge protectors for the machine. I just din't know what was causing this!

While standing there about to turn the machine off again the needle began going up and down, slowly at first then full speed. I quickly jumped backwards thinking "boy if this thing is going to blow up I don't want to be near it".

By now the machine is at full speed. (I thought to myself "if I could sew that fast these quilts would get done in short time.") Then I happen to glance down under the table and there was one of my big fur babies (the one in avatar) with his head resting on the foot pedel to the machine. Problem solved.
Once I gently moved his head from said pedel the machine stopped and all was well.
Got a lot of sewing done that nigh after I quit laughing!
Spooks in the sewing machine?...NO. Dog in the sewing room?... YES.

So funny and you had no one to share it with at that hour. Didn't it make you want to call someone and say "You won't believe what just happened"?. I think that is why a lot of people go to facebook. (We would probably come to the Quiltingboard.)

Naturalmama 02-24-2011 10:38 PM

Oh that's so funny! I'm glad that's all it was! Reminds me of why I backed of from sewing for a few years - ds would crawl under my sewing table when when was little and press the foot - it was too dangerous to sew when he was that little since I didn't always know he was there, so I packed it all away until this last year!

Thats FUNNY!!! Reminds me of the time I was looking out my sewing room window at night and saw a red glowing object about 4 feet from my window, about 3 inches in diameter. I told hubby and daughter to come and look.Hubby went outside, and nothing. It stayed for about 15 minutes, until one of us turned around and BEHIND us was my little granddaughters sweat shirt hanging on a chair and it had one of those light up things on it.Reflecting right in the window.Boy did we feel stupid!
