I have a sun burn, with no access to vinegar, aloe vera or ibuprofen... I'm at a friends for the next two weeks with no money on either end... what could I possibly do to take the sting out? Please and many thanks for the help! :)

cctx. 05-30-2011 05:34 PM

Talk about sunburn.....just got back from Port Aransas beach and I am redder than a boiled lobster.....!

Use Noxzema for now, that will cool some of the burn.

Go to the site I just posted. There are lots of things for you to try.

LovinMySoldier 05-30-2011 05:41 PM

Honey works too. I also sunburnt my arm while camping and all I had was chap stick with aloe. I stuck it on my arm, seemed to help too

earthwalker 05-30-2011 05:42 PM

Here's a link to a useful site...the grated raw potato is particularly good. I will spare you a lecture:) and hope you feel better soon.

I know flour works on burns, but you have to do it pretty quick. Flour and wet towel leave on until sting goes away. Might help sunburn. Good luck.

medots 05-30-2011 06:00 PM

flower for sunburns as any other burns best if kept in the refg.

BellaBoo 05-30-2011 06:07 PM

I'm so sorry. Sunburn hurts. Neutrogena cold cream is the best. The main thing is to keep your skin hydrated with something soothing. The dryness is what causes the tight burning feeling. If you have tea bags make a strong pitcher of tea, bring to room temp or chill if you like and soak a cloth in it and keep it wet with tea on your skin or keep spraying your skin with it. I keep a prescription of Silverdene for sunburns. It stops the pain almost instantly and keeps the skin very moist. It will keep for years in the frigde. Next time you are at the Drs. ask for a prescription. Great for kitchen burns too.
If I were you I'd be calling mom or dad or some relative to send money for meds.

adyldrop 05-30-2011 06:11 PM

COld WHOLE milk. on a washcloth layed on the affected area. no sting afterwards. stops the burn from continuing through further layers of skin. soothes the already damaged skin. only thing i use. look it up if you need to but i swear by this. think about it--eat something too spicy whatdya do? drink some cold refreshing soothing milk.

NEVER use Noxema--it actually doesn't help you only think it does; it doesn't stop the skin from continuing to burn long after you are out of the sun. Whole Milk.

Murphy 05-30-2011 06:17 PM

Ice cubes will work. Wrap in a cotton cloth and apply until the burning stops.

nativetexan 05-30-2011 06:23 PM

yep Noxezma helps.

BellaBoo 05-30-2011 06:23 PM

I've tried the whole milk before it didn't stop the pain at all. I think it depends on the degree of burn what will help the most. If you are in severe pain you need to go to the ER. You can become dehydrated if you have bad sunburn. If you have any blisters at all get to the ER.

I 've had to reapply quite a few times because my burned skin will warm up the washcloth and take awhile to stop the burn from continuing. It may still feel a little discomforted but by the morning I feel 100% and have no clothing restrictions. You are right though with the severe burns. I do the tea too--but I drink it to battle the dehydration! Lol!!

amazon 05-30-2011 06:54 PM

Mustard  The kind you put on a hot dog. Mix two part water/one part yellow prepared mustard( Ex.1tablespoon mustard /two tablespoons of water). Apply with cotton ball or pad and it will take the burn and the heat out. Can reapply as needed, but once usually does it. Once the pain is gone, take a cool shower. Try it , it really does work.

The sunburn is not that bad... no blisters... pain has subsided to be replaced by itching... but that is due to the damaged skin... the milk has helped a bit.

If the pain comes back I might do that... or if the heat from it doesn't go away, I'll do that... thanks! :)

You can use coconut oil as a natural sunscreen. Native islanders have used it for years. It helps block out the UV rays.

You can read more here: http://www.coconutresearchcenter.org/
I am not affiliated in any way. :)

Glad you found some relief.

irishrose 05-30-2011 07:10 PM

Go lay in a cool bath. Don't be surprised if the water warms up from your body. Been there, done that.

The Vaseline Intensive care is better than nothing. Sorry for your discomfort. :(

justwannaquilt 05-30-2011 07:41 PM

for the burn pickle juice is what I have used in a pinch.

I ALWAYS keep Cetaphil facial soap in the fridge. Put it on like a lotion (don't wash it off) after a shower put some powder over it so it doesn't stick to your cothes! Works AMAZINGLY!

Ramona Byrd 05-30-2011 07:57 PM

When my red headed son was tiny, the shade shifted and burnt his back above the diaper, so badly that it could not be touched.
I put vitamin E from capsules in cool water and shook it up and sprayed it on his back. That helped a lot, plus sleeping on his tummy for a couple of days.

wanda lou 05-30-2011 08:03 PM

cool shower... and an asprin if possible.

May I suggest that you see a dermatologist regularly. I'm a redhead who grew up before sunscreen and suffered numerous sunburns. The damage was done and now I need to be checked regularly for skin cancer. Also had an aunt who died from melanoma. Don't want to scare anyone but just be aware.

Count me in this camp, at 39 I started having small cancers and precancerous moles removed. They make special UV clothing and hats that help. You might also check with a derm as there are different sunscreen ingredients and maybe theres one you are not allergic to.

Beth, all covered in scars! :)

God Bless you and your friend. I know you are in real pain. I hope you find something for relief really soon.

Alu_Rathbone 05-30-2011 11:00 PM

Again, thank you all...

knlsmith 05-30-2011 11:19 PM

My DD has a lot if issues with sun and heart. The ER dr said put milk of magnesia on the burn and drink gatorade (instead of water). Works like a charm. We usually make at least 1 or 2 ytrips to ER a summer cuz she xcant take the heat or sun very well.

Plain yoghurt might help, my son uses it as he always has some in the fridge. Hope you feel better soon.
