Just was wondering, as we approach Thanksgiving, what is that one dish you absolutely MUST have on your holiday table? We always have the traditional things, but our sausage-apple stuffing is the best!

Sadiemae 11-14-2010 07:07 PM

Turkey, and I really miss my Mom's stuffing.

sak658 11-14-2010 07:11 PM

Turkey and dressing, ham, candied sweet tators, corn casserole, green beans, pea salad, fruit salad, pumpkin pie, apple and pecan pie, rolls cranberry sauce and ice tea

gotta have it all......

EdieClay 11-14-2010 07:11 PM

When I cook Thanksgiving Dinner, I cook all the usuals like turkey, dressing, gravy, sweet potato casserole, mashed potatoes, cranberry salad, etc. But the one dish my children always ask for is a broccoli/wild rice/cheese casserole that is out of this world. My son who once said that the best thing about being an adult was not having to eat anything green if you don't want to ... loves this dish. Yum Yum ... made me hungry just writing all this.

Any chance you might want to share your recipe? I'm always looking for something different to add to the Thanksgiving menu. That green bean casserole is getting old

Scissor Queen 11-14-2010 07:20 PM

Turkey and dressing, sweet potatoes, scratch dinner rolls, and a nice ham. Preferably my own dressing. My mother makes the world's worst dressing. And her sweet potatoes are gross too. And she can't make a scratch dinner roll to save her life.

Then there's my sister who doesn't like Thanksgiving dinner at all. She'd be happier with pizza.

Overall I'm happier when I don't have to spend my holiday with either of them.

klgreene 11-14-2010 07:22 PM

Turkey, and my x-MIL's apple raisin stuffing. My DH is a really picky eater, so we don't go all out, just the usual.

kathidahl 11-14-2010 07:26 PM

LOL..I have to have ham for my DH who does not like the yummy turkey that everyone else wants...

cosyquilter 11-14-2010 07:26 PM

Lots of pies: pumpkin, raisin, apple, lemon meringue, chocolate cream. Lots of real whipped cream.

amma 11-14-2010 07:40 PM

Turkey LOL When I was about 12, mom decided to bake a chicken instead... I took my empty plate to our neighbors and came home with sliced turkey breast and gravy!! ROFLMBO
I still tease mom every year, asking if we are having turkey, or do I need to bring my own.

Add dressing, potatoes and gravy... everything is nice, but these are what I MUST have :D:D:D

finch 11-14-2010 07:45 PM

I can relate to this. My Mom didn't like turkey.

almostfree 11-14-2010 08:00 PM

Mmmmmmm....I'm getting hungry just reading all this!

Momofthree 11-14-2010 08:02 PM

My mom's Cranberry Pineapple sauce. I have gotten my in-laws all hooked.

Ramona Byrd 11-14-2010 08:09 PM

Home made sage, sausage, raisin and white bread stuffing, with quarts of gravy. Where I come from in the WV hills, gravy was a national beverage!! And Punkin pie, strong with spices and whipped cream on top. Turkey or chicken, depending on how many are coming for dinner. Sometimes we had a turkey with small Cornish game hens, so they could go home with folks who live alone. Lots and lots of mashed potatoes and gravy..or did I say gravy? We LOVE sausage gravy. None of us are fragile and delicate looking, we like our groceries.

Quiltforme 11-14-2010 08:22 PM

My grandmothers cranberry relish and my sweet potatoe mashed bake.

trisha 11-14-2010 08:44 PM

All the usuals...but have to have fresh polish kielbasa with sauerkraut...it is a must.

hazeljane 11-14-2010 08:58 PM

Cranberry orange relish. MMmm. Fresh cranberries and oranges, grated together. I use it for jam in the weeks after. can't get enough.

Nancy, I was just about to ask the same thing! lol
It sounds fabulous!!

sueisallaboutquilts 11-14-2010 10:04 PM

I make cranberry sauce ala my Mom's recipe. It was always a big hit and she told me it's as good as hers. That's a huge compliment b/c she's a great cook and I'm not! :D

ilovequilts 11-14-2010 10:09 PM

stuffing, stuffing, stuffing, stuffing..

It really is my favorite, and my moms is heavenly.

LovinMySoldier 11-14-2010 10:17 PM

2 years ago we did a nontraditional traditional Thanksgiving dinner :) It was so much fun. We cooked all the traditional foods, turkey, sweet potatoes, stuffing the usuals. We just didn't cook anything the traditional way. We did a deep fried turkey. Our sweet potatoes were made with onions and bacon (so incredibly good). We had all sorts of different dishes. We always do a big family thing with about 8 different families. Everyone played along with the different foods. Even the standard pumpkin pie was a bit different!

We always go to my BIL's house. They make oyster stuffing. Can't handle that. So I always make my own-----with lots of sage, lots of celery, lots of onions.

And I make the gravy. Using the turkey pan for the basis, including onioins, then thicken with corn starch----------which is my favorite thickener.

We may have the same recipe! (except I use splenda for diabetic DH) AND giblet gravy-no brown gravy for this southerner. Along with the usual Thanksgiving suspects-turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, corn on cob, rolls.

Gotcha beat -- one year my mom made hogmaw!! We ate it but that never happened again. Boy, I could eat some good hogmaw!

pojo 11-15-2010 12:00 AM

stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy and rolls. Turkey white

But I would be satisfied with a pizza too. My husband hates it.

Turkey with Sage Dressing, Mashed potatoes, gravy, Creamed Corn, Whipped Rutabagas, Shrimp Salad, rolls, homemade pumpkin & mincemeat pies; plus, on the table, a dish of black olives and a pitcher of celery stalks. Same meal all of my life, and the one my great grandmother cooked. lol... oh, and Irish Coffees, and Bailey's.

LOL!! "we like our groceries"
My Daddy is a gravy addict, too; we all say, "where's Daddy's lubricant?"

Some of the comments here are more fun than the dishes, LOL.
Aren't quilters great eaters!! It's that passion we all have....

I Know, I Know I am going to take a ribbing on this, but it is not Thanksgiving without Turnips. I could eat my weight in them, but also add in turkey and Mom's Dressing!

moonrise 11-15-2010 03:53 AM

DH expects my sweet potato casserole every year. He could just eat that by itself. Phooey on the rest!

mollymct 11-15-2010 04:00 AM

I love it all, but look forward to the dressing (cornbread and sausage) and desserts the most!

I'd also love the wild rice and broccoli casserole recipe!

Going to google hogmaw to see if it matches the picture in my head!

DebsShelties 11-15-2010 04:13 AM

With my folks getting up in age, my family has decided it is more important to spend quality time rather than have to have's as there will be a time in the future where what we have today will have to change and have less overall.
Old saying though, less is more.
The Thanksgiving before I moved here I was alone for the first time in my life. I had pasta for dinner that night. Something simple since it was just me.
Was a real eye opener as to here is what life will be like when parents are gone.

hobo2000 11-15-2010 07:32 AM

As long as I have my family, DH, 4 sons & wives and grandkids at the table the food will always taste good. Its what I am most thankful for today. Just like the huge dinners of yesteryear are no more, I am sure in future years we will do with much less and still be thankful.

CarrieAnne 11-15-2010 07:39 AM

Turkey, and sweet potatoes. YUM!

amandasgramma 11-15-2010 07:41 AM

My mother's cornbread dressing and the lime jello/cottage cheese/pineapple salad.....If I don't get them on the holiday, I'll make them soon afterwards!!!!

annyroony2 11-15-2010 11:34 AM

I want potato salad with the usuals, but the kids all want mashed potatoes, so I do both, so I will have potato salad left over.

Carol's Quilts 11-15-2010 11:45 AM

All I need on my plate at Thanksgiving is bread stuffing from inside the bird, homemade turkey gravy, canned jellied cranberry sauce (I've tried ALL the others - made with orange, apple, pineapple, nuts, whatever - keep coming back to good old Ocean Spray), and creamed onions (the little tiny white ones). GOTTA HAVE the creamed onions. Even if I'm alone, I'll make creamed onions on Thanksgiving. If I go to someone's house, I'll make-and-take the onions - don't even care if no one else likes them.

[stuffing. . So I always make my own-----with lots of sage, lots of celery, lots of onions.

That's my favorite part. I even make stuffing just anytime.
