I recently sent a money order to a person on this board for a book, I wrote her yesterday to ask where it was, she proceeded to tell me just received the money order yesterday and I sent it on 08/26, today is 09/04 so what she is telling me is that it took over a week to travel from Mass to maryland, I am sorry I do not buy it and she said she was mailing today and that I should see it in a week, can someone please tell me I am crazy and that this is normal, because it seems to me as if I am getting the run around.

Rhonda 09-04-2010 10:53 AM

Mail can take up to 10 days to get from one place to another. I send out templates to people all the time. I had a check sent to me from an hour away from where I live. It took 3 weeks for me to get it. It had been remarked by someone in the postal system and had gone to two other states twice before some kind soul at the po saw it and sent it my way.

Generally speaking most things take about 4 to 5 days to get from one place to another here in the states but that can be more if there is a weekend or a holiday or if you mailed it after the pickup time for that day. Our mail is picked up at 4:30 promptly so if I take it in at 4:20 it won't go out as they have to have time to process it first.

And that is providing it didn't get stuck in the sorting machine or get ripped and kicked out into hand sort.

A week is not very long to give her before you get too concerned. I would allow at least 10 days and then if it didn't show up I would contact her and try to track it.

Oh I totally understand!! I was quite mad at the lady who had sent me the check. She had her merchandise and I sat here with no check. She told me she got it back and sent it out again and I felt like I was getting the runaround!! So I felt bad when I found out what had happened to the check but it was understandable to feel that way. My check went to Wis from SE Iowa 2 times to the same post office! and went through several post offices along the way. Someone along the way cancelled out the code on the envelope and wrote in new code which sent it the wrong way. Then it ended up in a dead letter office where some kind soul figured it out and I finally got it in my post office box. Very frustrating!! I was on the point of not selling to her anymore.

Jim's Gem 09-04-2010 03:12 PM

I have had mail take over a week to just travel an hour south of me. I have also had it arrive the next day. You just never know!!!!

Lisa 09-04-2010 03:18 PM

Too soon to worry I think. That sounds about right, it takes up to 5 days when I mail something from Texas to Colorado, that's why they call it Snail Mail! I would give it as long as it took her to get your check for you to get your book, maybe add a day or two for good measure and then you can start to worry.

luvTooQuilt 09-04-2010 03:54 PM

Ah Yes Snail Mail, one never knows if and when it shall be received. And even worse when its shipped Media mail!!! Media mail can take 1-3 weeks..

So hang tight, give it a lil while longer but ask if they sent it with delivery confirmation. You might be able to check on its progress and whereabouts..

MadQuilter 09-04-2010 04:19 PM

What you describe is a big reason why we stopped paying by check. It CAN and often does take a long time for the mail to get to its destination. Be glad she got the check and you will now get your product.

Jingle 09-04-2010 04:50 PM

I think now days people are just too leery of getting ripped off. Postal system has never been 100% reliable.

Born2Sew 09-04-2010 04:55 PM

Let's face it folks. Nothing is 100% except death and taxes. I had a list once that told how much missent and misdelivered mail pieces there was on a daily basis provided that the service was 99.9% accurate. Pretty scary stuff when you look it everything from that perspective.
Unfortunatly, nothing in this world is 100% perfect. There was only one and look what happened to him.

earlylace 09-04-2010 05:01 PM

also remember if the book is sent media mail it could take 7-10 days to get it. Be patient, now with the new feedback system we all will be able to tell if others are having the same problems, hopefully we all can work out our problems with each other in a kind way.

sharon b 09-04-2010 09:47 PM

The postal service can be slow at times . I don't think it has been that long to send up the warning flags

mzsooz 09-04-2010 10:10 PM

A friend of mine once sent me a Christmas card from the same town I lived in. It finally arrived at my house the following April!!

Ramona Byrd 09-04-2010 10:24 PM

"THE MAIL" is a very strange and, at times, lovely thing to get.

I had a friend some time ago who lived in Ontario, CA.
She complained for a long time about having her mail first going to Canada before some of it made it back to her house!!

And when I lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico, I actually got mail that had been addressed to Albert's Turkey, and I GOT IT!!

One more aside to that, I actually had a (okay, she was honestly a hillbilly from WV) cousin, who was kinda weak (okay, so she was dumb as heck even though not a blonde) on the subject of geography, write and ask if she came to visit me in New Mexico if she would have to have a pass port!!

litacats 09-04-2010 10:26 PM

I once had a letter deliverd 12 months to the day it was sent. it went to every town in australia starting with a W before it arrived here.
and now we have post codes and it is only a little bit better.
I often have up to 6 stamps from other post offices on it before it gets here

ckcowl 09-05-2010 01:44 AM

if she lives in a rural area it could easily have taken that long...my daughter lives in the country and when i lived 9 miles from her i sent something to my granddaughter one time that took 9 days to get there, i guessed the mail lady was walking....a mile a day....
it can be aggravating but when you are at the mercy of the postal system you just have to wait. and if she sends the book parcel post it can take a month to get to you. my recommendation is if you are going to order through the mail to always use delivery confirmation; that way the item in question can be tracked.

ptquilts 09-05-2010 03:39 AM

I had a Priority package that took 5 days to go 50 miles.

ptquilts 09-05-2010 03:41 AM

Also, Delivery COnfirmation is NOT tracking. SOMETIMES, it gets tracked along the way, sometimes not. The final scan only means that it arrived at the correct zip code.

earlylace 09-05-2010 04:07 AM

good point! I once tried to check on something and was told they could only confirm it got to its location, so if its lost they cannot do anything to help you find it!!!

The funny thing to me is I can send something to someone here in the states and it can take up to 10 days. I send packages to Katrine in France and it takes 4 dys to get to her!!! We have done it several times and it is always 4 days! Now Canada takes 2 weeks to get anything to anyone there. I just mail and hold my breath that it doesn't get lost!

At one point we were having some of the templates get lost and never found. Someone speculated that maybe the postal workers were hijacking them and quilting in the back room! LOL Only a joke!!

Barbm 09-05-2010 07:19 AM

I sent 5 boxes out the same day. Some as slow as it can go, another priority. The one slow one got there before the priority (same general area of the US). So I guess there's no rhyme or reason, just which truck it's on.

I am lucky to have a UPS acct. with work. I ship my quilts out to be quilted so I can be sure to track it and make sure it's insured.

Come to think of it- dd hasn't told me her box arrived. Need to call...

ptquilts 09-05-2010 01:40 PM

UPS is GREAT - tracking every step of the way. I figure anything over 2 pounds, or with any kind of value., UPS is cheaper and better than the PO.

martha jo 09-05-2010 05:14 PM

I send an insurance payment July l that has not arrived yet. Who knows?

martha jo 09-05-2010 05:15 PM

UPS is not good if you live in the country. I live on a ranch and UPS dropped my meds over the gate and the wild hogs got it.

amandasgramma 09-05-2010 06:34 PM

I live 215 miles from my folks. It took 7 days for them to get a card from me.....nope, can't trust the PO!

Candace 09-05-2010 06:46 PM

In the future, pay by paypal and you won't have this situation...

bearisgray 09-05-2010 06:53 PM

Sent pillow cases to our grandsons - all at the same time from the same post office window - and they arrived on different days.

Candela59 09-05-2010 07:00 PM

I sent my sister a birthday card. Mailed it from Oregon to San Diego. 3 weeks went by and she never received it. I got the card by about a week later marked "undeliverable" "no such address". Now...my sister has lived in the same house for 13 years! Go figure!

C.Cal Quilt Girl 09-05-2010 07:01 PM

Sometimes all you can do is hope !! Recently 2 boxes went out to same address at same time, thru major carrier 1 was a week later in arriving?? Went thru 2 different hubs who knows why, but they did get it and that was the main thing!
Saw somthing sad thought about when I say this post, not long ago on the news, a carrier truck had caught fire, Just sat there and cringed at all the mess that was going to make!

Honey 09-05-2010 07:16 PM

The mail here has been terrible lately. I am constantly getting mail that isn't mine. And slow doesn't begin to describe it!

debbieumphress 09-05-2010 08:36 PM

I ship via USPS because it is convenient since we live in the country. ALso use media mail to save costs for my customers. Fortunately, they all arrive quickly. I am not even going to sell anything in NOvember or december. LOL.
In all fairness to the post office, having worked there 8 years while a single mom, money was good. It only takes a human to throw the box in the wrong bin and not walk over to correct it and off it goes to the wrong place. SO like any other business, you can't really blame the owners but the person. Life happens. SO my wish would be that anyone working would take personal pride in their work and do the best, this would prevent all kinds of issues. ANd the world would be a better place...really?

ptquilts 09-06-2010 04:28 AM

ALL UPS shipping is insured, so if the hogs got your meds, you are entitled to a replacement at UPS' expense. Not much help if you need them right away, but still.
Also the first $100 of insurance is free on UPS. I have an account with them so living in the country is not a problem, I can get them to stop by when I have a pickup.

Mimito2 09-06-2010 05:24 PM

I got a notification from my bank that my car payment was late. Checked the checkbook to make sure I had sent it. Yep. had not cleared my bank so I sent another check for 2 payments out. 3 weeks later I get the first check back and envelope says return to sender for lack of postage. Stamp was on envelope when I mailed it. It was handed to the mail clerk and hand canceled in front of me. You could see half circle on the envelope. When I asked what happened the Postmaster shrugged and I had to pay a late fee. I have to take my mail to the post office because I have watched the delivery lady drive right by my box with the flag up.

lalaland 09-06-2010 05:31 PM

I once mailed a car payment to a bank that was only about 5 blocks away from the mailbox I put the letter in, I was just too lazy to walk to the bank and I was mailing it in plenty of time. Well, it took over a month to get there AND I was charged a late fee.

Never did that again!

twistedsheets 10-09-2010 06:48 AM

Our p.o.wont deliver to my actual address. They killed the adress years ago. So I have to rent a box. If something for some reason wont send to a p.o.box I have to give my landlords adress and he brings to me. Saying that: I am always asking the 2 guys who work at the p.o. was some one doing a wacky tobaccy again. They constantly put mail in the wrong boxes. If I am expecting something to come and I don't receive it , I have to have them search the boxes around mine. And 95% of the time ,it was put into some one elses box. The P.O. is getting very unreliable where I live!!

amandasgramma 10-09-2010 06:55 AM

Do NOT doubt her!!!! I had some medical supplies sent from Portland, Oregon to where I live -- 3-4 hours away and it took a week!!! That was a week AFTER it was shipped!!!!

laureneberhard 10-09-2010 07:14 AM

Kelley did you ever get your package?

debbieumphress 10-09-2010 11:20 AM

If it was a book I always mail media mail. It is suppoed to be slow but mine usually get there fast.

EagarBeez 10-09-2010 11:24 AM

I recently ordered from Harbor Freight, and they sent the order the 28th of last month. I just got it yesterday, went from Fed Ex to regular mail. Came to my po in town where it sat for a week until they got to sorting it

2wheelwoman 10-09-2010 11:29 AM

I mailed cards to family in WA from CA the same time I mailed a box to Iraq. The box got there first. Go figure.

I would allow more time for your items to arrive before thinking its a problem.
