While at a grocery store yesterday I had my purse with my wallet and keys stolen from the grocery cart. I had it locked in the child safety strap to no avail it was still taken. I turned my back for 3 seconds to pick up a box of rice on the bottom shelf. This morning the local police called me to tell me it had been found, everything was there except my cash and I just had gotten my check cashed. Please hang on to your purses while shopping - people are desperate! I hope it feeds some hungry kids and not used for dope and drink. In the meantime I'll get by......................

Annaquilts 07-16-2011 06:29 AM

I am so sorry to hear this happened. Thank you for reminding us to wear our purse on us and not leave it in the shopping cart even for seconds.

ontheriver 07-16-2011 06:30 AM

I'm so sorry this happened. I never take my purse off my shoulder when I am in any store for just this reason. My mom puts hers in the basket and it makes me nervous. At least she only carries a credit card and only has a few dollars in cash, but still.

sweet 07-16-2011 06:30 AM

You are fortunate that they only took the cash, to be careful I would still contact the credit card companies and keep a careful watch out for id theft.

Chasing Hawk 07-16-2011 06:31 AM

I carry mine across my chest. I can't afford to have mine stolen, my purse has something concealed in it. .

pocoellie 07-16-2011 06:34 AM

So sorry this happened to you. Thanks for reminding us to be careful.

amma 07-16-2011 06:37 AM

(((HUGS))) I am sorry that this happened (((HUGS)))
I agree, call your credit card company and have them change your cards and your bank to let them know what has happened.

patchitpat 07-16-2011 06:55 AM

Thanks for the hugs and the thoughts. Credit cards have all been stopped and reissuing new ones, thanks for reminding me.

dinlauren 07-16-2011 07:26 AM

So sorry this happened to you. The person who took your purse has your address...you might consider changing the locks at home.

GwynR 07-16-2011 07:33 AM

I am glad to hear you got everything back but the cash. This happened to me years ago, my 2 yr old daughter was holding my bag for me when a woman took it from her while my back was turned for a second. DD was standing right by my legs, she was holding my hand even. I never got anything back at all. It's a horrible thing to happen. Hugs

nonymac 07-16-2011 07:50 AM

My Mom and I were at a store last Sunday. I noticed a guy following us around the store. Everywhere we went he was always right behind us - I wouldn't leave Mom's side and kept a good watch on her purse and him, of course. He didn't take anything but I was not liking the feeling. I'm not saying he was up to something but have never been in a store where someone seemed to be following you.

QuiltnLady1 07-16-2011 08:40 AM

So Sorry!!! This is a lesson -- keep a real close watch on your purse. A neighbor had one of those backpack things and while she was grocery shopping someone got in the outer pouch of the backpack and took out her wallet without her knowing it. She didn't get hers back so she had to cancel everything.

BluegrassGurl 07-16-2011 08:51 AM

So sorry to hear. I had my debit card stolen from my purse in my car... and to beat all.... it was at a camp for children with serious medical conditions. A beautiful, state-of-the-art facility... and we did not charge anything for children to attend. Yet.... I learned that dishonest people are everywhere.

I had left my purse in my unlocked car (no one around) while I walked down to the camp fire before I left for the day. There was one late check-in.... and one of the family members went "out and about" while the child was being checked-in. This person not only stole my debit card, but also took the wallet of another employee from another car.

I did not discover it missing until the next morning. I immediately got on-line to check my bank balance.... they had already spent over $700.00 of my money!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Debit cards are just like cash. They spent it at various Wal-marts. I was stunned.

They spent about that much money from my co-worker. Un-#(*&@*#(- believable!!

We called the state police. They informed me that Wal-mart is the last place a person should use stolen cards.... because they have video ALL over the store.... as tight as Fort Knox.

Sure enough... all of the Wal-mart stores cooperated and provided us with the video of them using my card. We were able to identify exactly who it was. Unfortunately, they used the card in another state.... and our Ky State Police were not able to "go after them" unless they came to Kentucky.

The most unfortunate repercution of the entire incident..... the child with the condition will not be able to come back to camp.

I sure learned my lesson..... even in environments that we think are safe (church, home, etc) I will never leave my purse in my car.

blueangel 07-16-2011 09:03 AM

I accidently left my purse in a grocery cart outside. When I missed it I went back to see if it was still there. It wasn't, but I went inside and someone had found it and turned it in. So there is still a few honest people out there.

jaciqltznok 07-16-2011 09:12 AM

This happened to me once...they took my wallet out of my purse at a Military base thrift store.

I knew it had to be an elderly person, because that was all that was there that morning...they had just opened so not many people around.
We were leaving for vacation THAT afternoon!
It was returned to me, via MAIL with only the cash taken out in a box that smelled of moth balls!
Yep..elderly thief...I hope the $10 in it brought them some happiness that day...sad when you think what jail time would have cost them!

catrancher 07-16-2011 09:14 AM

I've started wearing a fanny pack in the grocery store. Frees up my hands and I don't worry about theft. Sorry for that experience. I had my wallet stolen once. What a bummer.

Painiacs 07-16-2011 09:33 AM

Soo scarey! I always just stick my purse in the cart. We live in a small slower community and forget crime happens anywhere!

azdesertrat 07-16-2011 09:46 AM

Because I work in the grocery business,I can't tell you the amount of women who leave their purses in the basket and walk off.If I come across one,I will stand by the basket and ask,In a very loud voice."whose basket is this"? and when the owner speaks and comes over, I will them her Please do not leave your purse unattended,it is too easy to steal.
One year a woman had her purse stolen out of her cart with her child sitting right next to it! She had turned away and got focused on something else and a guy walked right by and took it

If this happens again...please contact the store manager. Pretend to be asking where a certain product is...but, be telling them to look at the person, and that they are very suspicious. They don't want anything to happen and will contact security.

I CARRY A small wallet in my pocket at all times when shopping have id and my bank card hardly ever carry cash i leave big purse in trunk of car so sad times are so bad for so many people thanks for the reminder

Ramona Byrd 07-16-2011 11:10 AM

A few weeks ago outside a grocery store I grabbed a shopping cart and started in, noticed that there was a big red wallet/bag sitting in it. So I grabbed it and walked back down the row of cars getting ready to leave, and one woman glanced at the wallet, scrabbled at her passenger seat and when she came up empty, her mouth was open and her eyes were rounded in shock. I asked her name and address and in front of her opened the wallet and checked out her driver's license..she was SO glad to get it back, it was packed with money just ready for them to go on vacation. I made her swear to get a strap purse that she could always wear!! I"ll bet she never uses just a wallet anymore, that thing will go in a purse with a long strap.

I carry a wallet in my pocklet and have conceled things in my waist band at times;)

Amythyst02 07-16-2011 01:13 PM

hmm I always leave my purse in the cart, with the child seat belt around it, guess I won't be doing that anymore!! Thanks so much for the info, sorry about what happened to you though. I guess I should have known better, especially the way times are. But, I seldom carry any cash, but if they got my debit card, I would be in big trouble.

quiltingme 07-16-2011 01:14 PM

sorry for your loss. thanks for the reminder to hang on to our purses. I am even leery of leaving mine in the cart with my hubby pushing it, as he turns away often or just walks away from the cart to go get something. he just does not believe anyone would ever steal it out of the cart... he should have lived in an earlier time, huh?

Excellent point, they might be trying to give you a false sense of security by having everything returned, but might have somehow made key copies?

Yes, this sounds paranoid, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

The fear you must have felt at that moment {{hugs}} to you.

Another reminder..do NOT ever put your purse in the trunk when you stop in a parking lot. Do it at the LAST place you go, because someone sitting in a car near you can see that the trunk has a purse in it.

lynn_z 07-16-2011 04:54 PM

I wear clothes with pockets when I am out shopping. Back pockets in jeans are the perfect place for billfold and cel phone. I have phone set on vibrate...haha!

sewnsewer2 07-16-2011 04:58 PM

OMG! I never let my purse out of my site! I'm glad you got it back.

I know how that feels. Someone took my cash, credit cards and checks on July 7 this year.

Homespun 07-17-2011 04:38 AM

It's a sad commentary on our world today. I accidently left my purse in a buggy one day inside the store and drove away. Quickly realized it and returned to the store. It was still sitting in the buggy. Lucky me.

ploverwi2 07-17-2011 04:44 AM

Now, now, now, I am an elderly person, and I don't use moth balls!!! LOL

sewmom 07-17-2011 04:45 AM

My DD left her purse in her car,but took her wallet in her apt. During the night someone smashed her window with a brick and stole it. She got it back b/c a friend of a friend bought a designer knockoff purse from a guy for $15. He knew it was probably stolen , but bought it anyway. He wouldn't tell the police who it was b/c he was studying to become a cop and didn't want to get in trouble. My DD got her cards back, they had thrown them in the garbage at McDonalds and someone reported it. She was more upset about the purse(her favorite)than she was about her cards. But hopefully she learned not to even leave her purse in the car.
I have to admit that I leave my purse in my cart at the store all the time. Maybe I'll rethink that?

ploverwi2 07-17-2011 04:49 AM

I am so sorry about your misfortune. No doubt it feels like someone knows many personal things about you, and I know from experience how that feels. It is so frightening. My heart goes out to you. I wish I could give you an actual hug and maybe even take you out to lunch. I pray that you will be able to not feel terribly afraid, when you go shopping again. Please take care.

Miss Priss 07-17-2011 05:42 AM

I wear slacks with pockets. I have a mans bill fold that I carry my DL and small amout of cash and a debit card. I put it in my pocket and my keys in the other. I don't need a cell phone while shopping, it distracts me. I make my sacks light so they are easier to grab two or three and "sling" into the back seat. Not the trunk.

ladybug45 07-17-2011 06:13 AM

My daughter had a habit of leaving her purse in the cart while putting her groceries in the trunk. Someone drove by and lifted it out of the cart. Her keys just happened to fall out before they got very far. If not we would have been sitting there with no way to get home.

They used her debit card at Kmart to purchase $300 worth of stuff. They were men and her card had her picture on it. Needles to say they didn't look like her. They were on video but nothing was ever done about it.

They tried to use her drug card to buy gasoline. They were too stupid to know they could only buy stuff from pharmacy with it.

She now puts her purse in the front seat and locks the door before unloading her groceries.

Pam B 07-17-2011 06:37 AM

So very sorry this has happened to you! :( I know that many people feel secure in fastening handbags with the 'seatbelt' but I guess this just goes to show that it really is not much of a deterrant. Again, very sorry!!!

Lindsey 07-17-2011 06:39 AM

I had my handbag behind the truck seat under a sweatshirt while horse back riding and when i came back it was gone. I din't know it was gone till I had taken the horse home and then reached behind the seat to get my bag. Yes, the doors were locked they popped the slide window open and reached in and took it.. You feel so violated. they must have been kids because they went right to the gas station and used the card to by cigerettes and soda. Spent 55 dollars and i had to pay the first 50.. I am always reminding people at the store not to leave their bags in their carts unattended. They sometimes are all the way at the other end of the isle..

Sewfine 07-17-2011 06:49 AM

That's a shame. I snaps mines on the buggy the same way. I will keep it on my shoulder from now on. Yes, times are hard, but why steal from others? There is Labor Ready and Able Body employment service that pays everyday. Get a job.

I have the metal clips that I use for my keys to hook my keys on my purse and one for all those little cards at the store for discounts and points. well I use the to hook my purse to the cart also the metal they see the child strap is hooked and can cut it but the hooks look like they are just hanging from my purse with the keys. you grab and the cart comes with you.. worked for me at wal mart.........the look on the face before she ran was great......
