Hubby's job moved us around the country during our first few years of marriage, so we've lived in a few places. I grew up in Massachusetts - LOVE the fall colors, did not like the taxes.
Kentucky - love the drives in the country, did not like the humidity.
Buffalo, liked being close to Niagara Falls and the snow/did not like the shoveling of said snow.
Indiana - didn't live there long enough to have a like/not like.
Texas - love the wild flowers, definitely do NOT like the heat.

emerald46 04-24-2011 05:02 PM

I love everything about Texas. We've been fortunate and travel quite a bit worldwide. Love, love lots of places we have been; but there is no place like Texas (heat and all!).

Maride 04-24-2011 05:06 PM

I was born and raised in Puerto Rico: Loved how it was warm all year round, hated that it was warm all year round.Moved to NYC, loved the activity and availability of everything. Lived in Plattsburgh, NY. Loved the country life relaxed life and great people, hated the extreme cold and lots of snow. Back to NYC, same thing.

sewgull 04-24-2011 05:07 PM

Coastal South Carolina is my home and I love it. We have have lived other places, but SC is home.

hopetoquilt 04-24-2011 05:17 PM

Live in southern part of NJ. We have all 4 seasons. I live in a nice suburban area. The schools are great for my kids. We are near relatives and Philadelphia and NYC. Hate the traffic and high taxes.

genafan201 04-24-2011 05:20 PM

I was born in Florida, and raised there and south Louisiana. I now live in Minnesota. I HATE WINTER, and unfortunately, up here, that lasts from about October 31 through April 15 (sometimes into May).

Then it's summer, hot and humid (which we do get a lot of)...I LOVE hot and humid. I'm dreaming of retirement when (hopefully) I can get moved back south (or Hawaii, but I think I'm REALLY dreaming on that one LOL!)

So, I both love and hate the weather...oh, and I LOVE the Minnesota Twins :)

Maggiesmom 04-24-2011 05:26 PM

I grew up Indiana and I think you would have liked it had you stayed. Only bad part is the snow and ice in the winter. Lived in NC and really liked it. Now in TN and think will stay here...just don't like tornado season.

jean1941 04-24-2011 05:34 PM

Born Texan and still Texan been lots of places but only li\/ed in Texas and there is no where else to be

shawnemily 04-24-2011 05:35 PM

I live in upstate NY. I love the adirondacks and the beauty surrounding us in this whole state. I love the 4 seasons. NY really is one of the most beautiful states in the country! I both love and hate the snow. I love the first snow of the season and anytime it snows the big fluffy flakes that just drift to the ground. I hate when it just doesnt stop.... :)
What I hate most about NY state is the TAXES. When I can retire I will probably move just because of them! then I can just come back to visit!!

IrelandDragonQuilting 04-24-2011 05:38 PM

Hmm never really thought much about this one. I lived in Alaska when I was active duty military, miss Alaska! But grew up in Wyoming and currently live here. What is great is the large vast country, we have flat areas and mountains. A smaller population, which is very nice. You can take long drives without seeing a town for a bit just beautiful countryside and ranches. But... here in Casper the wind blows a lot, and not just those light breezes, it can gust up to 70mph. but hey we all have the same hairdos! hehehehe

bodie358 04-24-2011 05:38 PM

I have only lived in 2 places in my life: in the city, So Cal and in a rural area, Central Calif.

City loves: my family is there, 24 hour access to stores, food, shopping is close, plenty of things to do

City hates: traffic, crime, noise

Rural loves: nature and peace and quiet

Rural hates: the opposite of city loves !

Pamela Artman 04-24-2011 05:38 PM

Born and raised in southern MIchigan, moved to the upper peninsula 3 years ago. Love the cooler summers, love the friendly small town, love the quilting groups I'm in, don't mind the tons of snow in the winter (TONS of it!!) It's kind of neat to watch it pile up and see windows disappear! And it's so white and pretty all the time because it snows almost every day! And let's face it, cold is cold! What's 5 or 10 more degrees colder? But I hate that it's so far away from my friends and family.

hobo2000 04-24-2011 05:44 PM

Born in Oklahoma City grew up between there and St. Louis. Hated ice storms, tornados, and sand storms. I will never go back. I have lived in The Plains, VA for 40 years, loved the beauty, the seasons hated the traffic to work an back. We decided to move closer to our work and now I live in MD and work in DC. Hate the traffic, high cost of living heat and humidity. Basically only like the fact I am 10 mins. From work, not much else. I miss my mountains, cool nights, wildflowers, I would love to go back to VA.

DogHouseMom 04-24-2011 05:45 PM

Today? I hate my psychopathic neighbords hurling nasty profanity at one of my dogs over the fence. Do they REALLY think the dog is going to stop barking when they're screaming at him? And BTW - the dog STARTED barking because the physcho neighbors were tossing broken tree branches over the fence into MY yard (witnessed by me through the kitchen window). Of course the dogs are going to bark when their turf is invaded.

And I'm not calling them psycho because of one incident. These folks are well known in the neighborhood for being syrupy sweet one minute and off the charts the next yelling, screaming, hurling the worst profanity 3" from your face. Has happened numerous times. What is the probabilty that husband AND wife are both bi-polar? dunno, but distinct possibility with these two.

What I like is when it's normal and quiet which frankly is most of the time. Until psycho neighbor (who introduces himself as follows "Call me Elvis ... Elvis Presley".

small town living :)

clynns 04-24-2011 05:50 PM

Born in Ohio. Lived in big city of Columbus for 35 years. Loved access to shopping, grocery stores and restaurants. Dislikes of city: sirens, trash from lazy people, road rage.

Live in country now. Likes: burning a fire in the fire pit. Camping in the yard during family reunions, watching the sun set or rise over the horizon, friendly neighbors (even the ones who don't know you), personalized bankers, post office staff, store clerks.

Dislikes: 1/2 hour drive to nearest big grocery store, nearest neighbor 1/4 mile away (not sure this is a bad idea), 2 1/2 miles to nearest gas station, well water (yuk) and blowing and drifting snow during the winters.

Out of all the dislikes, I'd have to say the snow is probably the worst thing about being out here. I've been in the country for 16 years now, and I don't ever want to go back to the big city.

If I had my druthers (did I really say that?) I'd live in Tennessee. I love the weather and the land.

sunflower126 04-24-2011 05:58 PM

Have lived in Western PA all of my life. Used to love the four seasons but the older we get the more we hate the long cold winters. Hubby not quite ready to retire although he could, have been talking about going to Florida for part of the year when he does. I just don't know if I can be away from my grandkids 4 months of the year.

lscho4jm 04-24-2011 06:02 PM

Born in upstate NY, lived in Illinois, Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, Florida, Hawaii and Maryland, as well as, a few foreign countries.

I miss the south. And, yes, I do know Maryland is south of the Mason-Dixon line. Cost of living in Maryland is high, traffic is a nightmare 99% of the time, and crime is outrageous.
The history of the area to include Virginia and D.C. is amazing.

Linda

SewMomma66 04-24-2011 06:09 PM

Born in KY, grew up in TN. Love my mountains.
Lived in:
Beaumont, Texas: Too hot, too humid
Lawton, Oklahoma: Military town nothing to do..too many tornadoes
England: beautiful just missed some of the American conveniences
Macon, Georgia: Like Georgia just not state tax.
St. Petersburg, Florida: Too hot, too humid
Denver, Colorado: loved loved loved Colorado...no bugs no humidity
Now..Back in Florida....home is where my family lives.

sounds like us..traveled the country, but there is no place like Texas.

ontheriver 04-24-2011 06:13 PM

Hubby was military so moved a bit and except for couple years lived in south. Grew up in Florida,
Lived there most, now live in Alabama. I love the south,it is never too hot for me. I hate to be cold. Now where I live very rural and I love the quietness, little traffic, small town living. One dislike, have to drive 45 min to bigger town to buy fabric, but on bright side, I make it a day out with lunch or whatever.

katesnanna 04-24-2011 06:27 PM

Hi from downunder (Australia) best place in the world to us.. Was born & bred in Queensland which is referred to as God's country. Have lived in most states and been to all except Tasmania as DH was in Air Force.
Happily retired now and back in Queensland. As some others said, no place like home.

Learned that any place is what you make of it.

Radiana 04-24-2011 06:30 PM

Born and raised in San Jose Ca. Used to like it here but the city has turned in to a dump. There's trash all over the sides of the expressways not to mention the city is filled with punks and their boom cars. Live with that noise all day and night. Lot's of gangs. Our city council has run the city into bankruptsy (sp). I don't care for the general population of people not friendly at all.

The weather is pretty nice and it's pretty centrally located so you can get away to nicer places in just an hour or two.

sharoney 04-24-2011 06:34 PM

Born in New Mexico, have spent the last 40 years in Texas. I've lived in Houston and West Texas, but I love the coast! I know it's hot and humid, and alot of people complain about that, but when it's cold and snowy in lots of other places, it's warm here. We've already got peppers from the garden- had some for supper tonight! The tomatoes will be ripe in a couple of weeks. There is always a breeze here to help cool things off. I don't think I could live very far north of here.

MZStitch 04-24-2011 06:35 PM

Raised in Connecticut, loved the country feel except the smell from the farm in the summer (Isn't it funny that I remember that so vividly).
Moved to California when I married, loved SanFrancisco, hated traffic on the highways!
Moved to New Hampshire, loved the fall colors, hated the cold winters and overall gloominess.
Now in South Carolina, love, love, love the. sunshine and the people. Been here 5 years now, it has to be the weather that makes the people here so darn happy.

4EVERquilt 04-24-2011 06:39 PM

I like Colorado, the mountains, how green it is and the changing of seasons. What I don't like is that is that I cannot find restaurants that serve the best green chili I am used to, grew up in Albuq. N.M. so, my excuse to go back there is to visit my family and friends houses, and eat all the green chili they have in their freezer, oh ya, and red chili!!

jillnjo 04-24-2011 06:40 PM

Lived in northern Indiana all my life,so it's home to me.I really love the changing of seasons, would miss it a lot. It's green and beautiful here in warm weather. The one thing I truly dislike is the cloudy weather we often get from the great lakes-can get depressing sometimes.Neighbors are friendly and helpful, people look you in the eye when your in town. This America is wonderful, isn't it?

Melody 04-24-2011 06:42 PM

Well, my DH and I both were born and lived all our lives here in the flatlands of North West Ohio, on a farm, which we have loved. But DH's family are all in southern Alabama, so the south is home too. I am not very good in hot humid weather, but darn, the older I get the less I like the snow and frigid temps. We are retired, but not from farming... someday-- sigh-- Maybe the Carolinas would be a good choice?

Ramona Byrd 04-24-2011 07:10 PM

Born and raised into my teens in lovely, green and hilly Milton, WV. Loved the green hills and late even/early morning blue mist,
hated the wet snow. Seems that I was kin to most of the town.
Now live in central California, more or less like the weather, hate the way even the best neighborhoods are becoming violent and hearing sirens every day. And now our glorious leaders are firing 30 cops at once.......

*AMEN*!!

Lisanne 04-24-2011 08:07 PM

I've been working in Southern California for about a year now, so I'll write about that. (It's temporary, and although I initially considered moving out here, I'm dying to be back on the East Coast, where there are real seasons and weather, too!)

What I Like
It's warm year-round (when the locals complain of the cold, it's because the temperature went down from 72 to 68 degrees), and rarely humid.

It's beautiful, no denying it. But I'm realizing that a lot of the beauty is man-made landscaping, and I'm longing for some real nature.

Better music on the radio stations than at home.

The ocean is here, and it's nice, but I'm not much of a beach person. The mountains are awesome, though.

Drivers are nicer here. They actually slow down to let you change lanes, which has been very hard for me to get used to, as at home, I signal, then wait for them to pass before moving into another lane.

More seafood restaurants (as opposed to none at home, and the few there that have any fish only have the wretched tilapia and mahi mahi these days).

Better burgers. They aren't required by state law to cook it until it's hard and flavorless, and they don't use those yucky buns with the corn crumb thingies on the bottom.

El Pollo Loco! LOL, I love this fast-food restaurant. Love their orange marinated rotisserie chicken, their soup, their soooo-fresh tacos and the new sweet potato fries!

And the #1 thing is that I have a job here (for a while, anyway)

What I Don't Like

No noticeable change of seasons. It about killed me to miss the snowy winter everyone else got this year. And I only got to experience the well-being that spring brings during the last day I was home in March.

Very little weather other than sunny and warm. Not even a good downpour or thunderstorm once in a while!

Palm trees are nice, but I prefer lots of leafy trees and ivy vines.

I'm in Orange County. It's endless 21st century suburb here. The buildings are impressive from the outsides, but it's all planned, and all houses set right up close to one another. No natural character, IMO.

PRICES! Clothes and such are the same, but groceries are ridiculous. $3.99 for a small jar of mayo, for example. Then they tax clothes and sales tax here is 10%. Rent is steep for very ordinary apartments (with terrific landscaping, but still), about $1500 on average for a 1 bedroom. Not to mention real estate costs...

I miss home.

texas granny 04-24-2011 08:13 PM

I was born in Memphis my dad was Navy so we lived from one coast to another. I moved to Texas in 69 then to Iceland then back to Texas in 72. It get's hotter every year and dryer.I lived in 15 different places. I don't plan to move again.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 04-24-2011 08:13 PM

I have never lived anywhere but here so I can't compare.

The cost of living is very cheap. We nearly had to move when my husband lost his job so we've looked at houses in many places in the last two years and nothing compares to prices here.

Virtually no crime. Doors are seldom locked.

On the other hand....

The school district is broke. The high school has boards over broken windows they can't afford to fix.

It's 12 miles to Wal-mart and 45 miles to anything else.

cjomomma 04-24-2011 08:19 PM

This has been very interesting reading. Thank you for asking this question.

I was born and mostly raised in central Ca lived anywhere from Avenal to Livingston and most places in-between. I loved it as a child and probably would have as an adult but my folks moved to muldrow, Ok. when I was a teenager. I loved Ok. and everything about it but after 4 years we moved back to Ca. where I spent the next 20 in misery. The summers are too hot and dry, in the winters the fog was horrid. People were unfriendly unless they wanted something from you. To much crime, drugs and gangs. I brought DH to Ky. for a vacation and then moved here one year later. I'm still looking for something to hate about it. We have 4 seasons, plenty of rain and friendly folks everywhere. I love small town life. Ok there is one thing I'm really starting to dislike and that is these cotton picking storms we have been having lately. I may need to go buy a boat because they are talking about having catastrophic flooding over the next few days. Anybody want to rent my family a room in their home? LOL!!

darlenewitt2004 04-24-2011 08:51 PM

I was born in Beaumont, Texas, moved to Austin, Texas, at the age of 4. Moved to Houston, Texas, at the age of 12, and have lived in the Houston area ever since. Lived in Spring, Texas, a suburb of Houston, then moved to Magnolia, Texas, another suburb of Houston. Love this area.. yes, we have hot summers, but the winters aren't bad at all. We're close to the big city, but live in a country atmosphere, with deer in the back yard, love it, love it, love it!

sewingsuz 04-24-2011 09:02 PM

I don't like where I live because there is no shopping a all.

purplemem 04-25-2011 02:03 AM

I currently live in Mississippi and love it! The people are so friendly. It is very hot and humid in the summer (thank God for a/c) but the winters are fantastic. I did wear a coat last winter but that is rare. We actually had snow, another rarity. I've lived in Texas (Dallas area) and liked it but not loved it. The traffic was crazy.

Lived in Colorado and loved it best of all. Didn't like the high prices for real estate, but that is to be expected.

Lived in Kansas and loved it. I love the casualness and work hard attitude in Kansas. The Frontier spirit is still there. Lots of very small towns. Didn't like driving 2 hours for a 24 hr grocery.

Lived in Arkansas, it was pretty and it was cheap. Still had the driving for hours to shop for groceries at a big store.

Lived in Tennessee, my home. Love Tennessee. My dream is to live in the Smokies.

Lived in Kansas City, MO. Liked it a lot. Shopping was really fun. Traffic wasn't miserable or crazy. A little too much snow for me.

Cuilteanna 04-25-2011 02:29 AM

Love the really long days in summer when it's still light at 10pm, hate the dark, gloomy winter (sunrise at 9am, sunset at 3:30pm).

Hate the weather, especially this last winter when we had snow and ice. Every decade or so we get a lovely warm dry summer. Love those!

We call it Rip-Off Ireland for good reason, so the cost of everything is another real negative.

And there are no real quilt shops. Major negative!

Have to agree with you. Also born and bred in Queensland and like you have been to or lived in most states of Australia. DH was also in Air Force and so was I. Love the lifestyle here and the not so cold winters. Queensland is definitely the best place to be.

Grambi 04-25-2011 02:43 AM

We traveled a lot with my husband's job and lived in some great cities and met some wonderful people. From the beginning of our marriage we knew that we would end up on the ranch that belonged to my husband's grandparents and then his mom. 200 acres in the Hill Country.

We built a house out here 7 years ago and came for weekends and vacation. In the process of building and visiting we discovered that my MIL had memory issues. I quit my job as an RN, moved into the ranch house and started tending to the needs of his mother (she lived in a different house on the ranch). She is now in assisted living and I am still on the ranch. DH is still working 4.5 hours away.

What I love is the quiet, peace, critters, cows and our two Miniature Donkeys, Riley and Walker who practically follow me into the house for treats. I love our two wonderful dogs.

I hate that my husband isn't here all the time and I HATE the drought we are in. I worry about fires (all it takes is one idiot throwing a cigarette butt out the car window to start a fire that could ruin lives, homes, animals, etc).
I worry about all of the creatures on the land finding food and water.

A bit long-winded, sorry.

Krystyna 04-25-2011 02:44 AM

Born and raised in Long Island, NY. The section where I grew up had a huge field and beautiful trees and I loved that about it. Now everything has changed and there is that "sameness" you see across the country especially in the downtown areas.

Lived in Brooklyn, NY and in Manhattan during my 20s in lofts and brownstones. Perfect for starving musicians and artists. Loved the fast pace and 24/7 life. Now it's unaffordable, crime ridden and dirty.

Now I live on a barrier beach island to the south of Long Island. It's warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer which I love. You can pretty much walk everywhere. Everyone knows everyone. What I don't like is that everyone knows everyone, the ever-increasing rules and lack of access to the water as the island becomes more gentrified, the taxes, the dirty politics and the fear of being washed away when the next big hurricane comes.
