Besides fabric, of course!

We've had that recent thread of how everyone saves money. And I know many of us learned lots from that. But I have a strict philosophy that I do everything I can to save, so that when I do splurge I never feel guilty about it.

My splurge is Coffeemate Hazelnut Creamer. I try to buy it on sale, but it's one of the few things I will buy even when it's not on sale. And I will only buy that brand, not the brand on sale. I enjoy every cup of coffee I drink with it.

So what's your splurge?

Patty Patches 02-11-2011 06:45 PM

My splurge is Lays potato chips and diet pop

earthwalker 02-11-2011 06:47 PM

Mine's not a food thing...I eat to live. Aside from quilting, gardening is my big interest, so my splurge is plants..preferably scented, flowering plants and beautiful native plants to bring the birds into the garden.

Deb watkins 02-11-2011 06:48 PM

Gevalia coffee club. It used to be Dept. 56 New England village and accessories several years ago. Now that I really have all the pieces I want, (yes, I have completed all of my desired sets) coffee and fabric.....

roseOfsharon 02-11-2011 06:55 PM

In the Spring when plants and flowers are available to purchase, I love to buy for my pots and garden to enjoy for the season. I do have perinials, but I still need to add to that! Otherwise, I tend to be stuck on quilting needs! I have cut back some on that. Boy is it hard to be frugal!!

mollymct 02-11-2011 06:59 PM

Hannajo, that is in my coffee every morning!! Lol. I guess I splurge a little on some of my clothes. Its hard to find things that fit and I am not really into trends, so I wear favorite things for years.

Jill 02-11-2011 07:01 PM

On my grandchildren (2 boys ages 4 and 2) and one girl who is 10-1/2 months old. It is so hard to pass by toys or clothing and not get something for them.

Ps 150 02-11-2011 07:03 PM

There's a few in our house. It has to be Hellmann's Mayonnaise, Folger's Coffee and Gianelli Sausage. And as for sewing and quilting, I had nothing but problems with Brother and Singer sewing machines so when I found a Janome that ran like a dream, I've bought nothing since. I now have a Janome serger, a Janome 6500, 2 Janome Quilter Companions and a Janome Embroidery machine and I haven't looked back.

seamstome 02-11-2011 07:05 PM

Hazelnut Creamer...I do buy the cheap stuff. Then it's raspberry creme cheese coffee cake.

Ps 150 02-11-2011 07:06 PM

Oh, and where was this thread about saving money? I'm always looking for good ways to improvise and save money (which just ends up in the fabric stash jar! )

cjomomma 02-11-2011 07:07 PM

There are 3 things that I buy in the store that have to be name brand. Kraft mac and cheese, chef boyardee and campbells soups. Everything else is generic.

We splurge on scuba diving. We hunt for Shark's Teeth and other underwater fossils and artifacts. We found a 6" shark tooth last year.

dakotamaid 02-11-2011 07:31 PM

Cheddar cheese popcorn. Addicted!

trisha 02-11-2011 07:37 PM

I definitely go all out on candle tarts. I collect tart warmers and have over 25 of them for all seasons. When Yankee Candle has them for $1.00 each I will spend at least $50 at a time to stock up. So I guess that would also count as being thrifty....right?

Considering I have virtually no income, I guess my splurge is on Lands End mock turtlenecks. No other brand seems to wear as well, fit me without question, have beautiful new colors each year, and feel so good in the cool/colder months for me. I literally live in them; I've had (a different) one on my body every day since early November!! I buy them on sale as often as possible and look for the free shipping coupons near Christmas time.

Bamamama, those shark's teeth are awesome!!

sharoney 02-11-2011 08:01 PM

I guess I'm a splurger! Have to have Starbuck's ground coffee, really good chocolate to bake with, just bought a bread machine to have fresh baked bread, now a wheat mill is on my list-
BUT! My REAL splurges are handbags and shoes! (shhhh! don't tell DH!)

craftybear 02-11-2011 08:57 PM

I wear turtlenecks all the time in the winter

Really good steaks. I like NY Strip cut at LEAST 1" thick and freshly cut. Hubby grills steaks perfectly and we eat quite a bit of it in the summer.

I also splurge on the absolutely best cookie in the world, Pepperidge Farm "Brussles".

Other foods include: Tea & Stilton Cheese from England, Olive Oil from Italy, coffee from Jamaica (for Hubby), and more cheese from every where else (we love cheeeesee!).

My dogs. Only the best as I breed and show them. Their food is pretty pricey as are the grooming supplies/tools that I use. You think you spend a lot on a pair of good fabric shears?

Books. Lots of them. Both traditionally bound books and books on tape.

Me too. I don't like shopping, so hunt for clothes made well of natural fabrics, then keep them for years, if waist and hips allowed that. It's best to pay more for the stuff that will last, instead of constantly trying to keep up with "fashion" provided by designers who seem to hate the adult female body.

Oh, and of course books, new, used, borrowed and read over and over.

Plants, I have far too many but it's fun to see them grow.

Jim's Gem 02-11-2011 10:23 PM

Fish for my aquarium!!!

I splurge on airfare and whatever my soldier wants. A lot video game purchases. Every once in a while I splurge on fashion and accessories. I also spend thousands on medical and dental goodness. Looking forward to landscaping the lot front and back and an entire home remodel. Squee!

jajudd24 02-11-2011 10:32 PM

I splurge on family and friends...grandkids..if they say they want something I try my best to get it for them.

Quiltforme 02-11-2011 10:50 PM

COKE I live and breath coke. The joke is I am a coke addict. I have my own little refridgerator full of it all the time :) No one can drink it. Yes I am selfish :)

Gladys 02-11-2011 11:05 PM

LOL Diet Pepsi, mini cupcakes and my family.

blahel 02-11-2011 11:58 PM

i like to have a cuppacino which my friend at work and I have once a week as our special treat.
I love making our house a home and I will splurge on that one special item.

Lisanne 02-12-2011 12:24 AM

I was going to say books and food, because I buy far too many books, far too much junk food and eat out too much, too - but those are bad habits, not splurges.

I am not a coffee drinker, but there is a Jamba Juice on my way to my current job, and I have started buying fresh-squeezed orange juice there about once a week. That's a splurge, because it's $2.75 for the 12 oz. size or $3.55 for the 16 oz. size, and that's more orange juice than I should be drinking anyway. But I tell myself that most people pay more than that for a Starbucks coffee, and they do it every day.

I guess my other splurge is sea bass (Chilean or otherwise), because it costs so much in restaurants, but oh, it is so good!

Psychomomquilter 02-12-2011 02:42 AM

Being that not much money coming hi the house, maybe take me out to eat, or yard sales or thrift store, not all at one time of course. just stretching that dollar here.

Annaquilts 02-12-2011 03:00 AM

My kids! I am always looking to get something or do something for them.

cilliebug 02-12-2011 03:19 AM

This will sound silly, but my husband and I collect Pez candy dispensers. Always looking for older ones, which are more costly, but once in awhile its okay to splurge on them. It really has been a fun hobby for us middleaged folks.

Vanessa17 02-12-2011 03:57 AM

books!

ssgramma 02-12-2011 04:15 AM

GOOD dinners out. Not often as it can be pricy but we pretty much skip the fast food and chain restaurants and eat at home. We make better food than most of them anyway.

Then when we do go out it is for food that I can't or won't cook at home.

Shunem 02-12-2011 05:15 AM

Books---at the library sale or thrift store, sometimes on Ebay or Amazon if good quilting books.

Also sometimes a chunk of really good cheese---the sharper the better.

quilter68 02-12-2011 05:48 AM

FABRIC of course. Other things are real coffee and real butter.

The food "of course" is pizza.

Elisabrat 02-12-2011 06:11 AM

Fresh fruit and good meat. I rarely eat sweets or snack foods but I truly love a piece of fruit that tastes like it is supposed to taste. I bought blueberries yesterday and they were terrific as a late afternoon snack. Popped in my mouth. Yum! And what do you mean BESIDES FABRIC? Is there anything better than fabric? I am seriously on the broke side but I budget $20 a month for fabric. It takes me a LONG time to decide which little piece to buy and if I buy a yard, oh heck, now I have spent over half of it! I sew to keep busy. It is my lifeline for entertainment so fabric is my top guilty pleasure.

CarrieAnne 02-12-2011 06:17 AM

Good chocolate! And there are a few magazines that I have to have, luckily they come out every other month!

Mmm, I'm with you on the Kraft mac and cheese. I haven't bought that in so long, b/c DH doesn't eat it.

vickimc 02-12-2011 06:24 AM

chocolate of course!!! lol

ptquilts 02-12-2011 06:25 AM

Coffee - has to be a good brand, not in the big plastic canisters. I just got some the other day and a brick of 8 O'Clock was the same price per ounce as Maxwell House. I always look for Arabica coffee beans, they are the better kind.
I also buy real cheese instead of Kraft slices or anything like that. Went in WM yesterday, Cabot Extra Sharp was 2 cents less than the WM brand!

I guess my splurge is real food instead of processed.
