Still - an interesting question.

Why are women (in some cultures) supposed to/expected to shave their armpits and men (as far as I know) are expected to have hairy armpits?

It used to be that for men, a hairy chest was "masculine" - I suppose a sculpted body does not show off as well under some hair, so that is why many men seem to have no hair on their chests now.

I still think what we do with our hair is a fascinating topic.

Don't know if this is why I don't have to often but have indian blood in me. If you ever notice indians never seem to have hair on their chest or face. I have no hair under my armpits.............YEAH!!!! And I shave only the bottom half of my legs since I wear burmuda shorts at the knees or longer most times. I also only need to shave about every 2-3 months when I go in for a pedicure as I really don't want them to see my hairy legs though they could care less. Just call me lucky.

I used to shave but then I started having waxing done and I'll never go back. The longer you have it done for, the less often you have to do it and the finer the hair grows back. I only do my lower legs about once every 5 weeks now.

(Was that too much information?)

We don't have to shave our legs. I haven't shaved my legs in years. It's a beauty custom, not a necessity.

At one time only hookers shaved. And I am not talking about crochet hooking. ; p

If you mix old age (78) with a chronic heart disease, you have not had to shave for the last 20 years. Now, the FACE is a different thing. That is me and my tweezers every morning.

Yes, the custom of shaving body hair is thought to have started when photography became popular, and of course "dirty pictures" were made, showing ladies of the evening, with shaved pits. It seems to be coming around again - I know a lovely young lady who wore a nice dress the other day, but below the knees - hairy (noticeably hairy) legs, kind of took me aback. To each their own.

Mine have always been quite hairy, and while others may have bad dreams about being caught out in public naked, my nightmares revolve around being in public in a dress and I forgot to shave my legs.

I just found this old thread. I started on page one. I haven't laughed so hard in a good while. I'm older so the legs get shaved about every 6 weeks. My one pit hair gets plucked when needed. The face is a whole different story. Facial hair is ugly!
