When I shave in the winter time I itch like crazy! Who starting this leg shaving crap anyway??? God put hair on our legs so maybe he expected us to keep it there! You know....leg warmers! :-)
|
|
I tell hubby the reason why I don't shave mine much is because I'm already married. lol
Told him if I were still dating/looking for someone, I'd shave, but since he doesn't complain much....I don't shave much lol |
you shave your legs in the winter??
I don't shave mine in the winter quite as often because, doggone it, it's cold outside & I'm wearing pants most of the time anyway. |
Don't shave in the winter...gotta have that winter fur to keep legs warm ;)
|
using an electric shaver does help that itch. my skin is terribly sensitive and i use an electric shaver now. also put moisturizer on often. and get older and lose hormones. i don't have very much hair on my legs now as it is!
|
you come up with some of the most interesting topics!!!
|
Love the avatar, marsye! Love the attitude of the questions even more! Why do we do most of what we do...conditioning! Age does make it easier to forego...but, if there's an event...like a retreat or a meeting or something special...well, shaving goes right back up on the list of things to get done to be ready! Yall know..."I shaved my legs, this better be good!"
or the "and I shaved my legs for this?" and the "You're so special...I even shaved my legs!" I'm bettin' somebody else can come up with some more of these...laughter is so healthy! I doubt it will take away the itch of winter shaving, however...LOL! |
I shave mine using a manual shaver (not electric) and just water in the shower, no soap or cream. Never have bumps or itchiness. I'm no expert, but maybe you're shaving too hard? Don't press on your skin, just touch the razor to it and lightly brush along the surface.
A light lotion might help with the itchiness, if shaving more lightly doesn't. Chances are the itchiness is from dry skin. Shaving off the outermost surface takes away what little protective oil is there and just aggravates the dryness. Also think about drinking more water, which helps dry skin in general. |
I use conditioner to shave my legs, no bumps, no itching! and is makes your legs soft too.
|
Listen ladies, if you live long enough you won't have to shave your legs. The hair stops growing except for an occasional sprout here and there. :):):)
|
I have them waxed. No stubble, no itch. Only have to do it once every 6 weeks. And yes, I bikini wax too. (Ouch!)
|
And now for another too-personal question... How far up do you go when you shave your legs?
My mother taught me that you only go as far as your knees, because if you shave all the way up your thighs, the hair will grown back darker and thicker there and you'll have to shave them forever. (This may have to do with the fact that women in my family have very dark, hairy legs below the knees and much sparser, lighter, thinner hair above them. Or it may be a generational thing - I've never known.) But I think most of my generation (those born in the '50s and '60s) shave all the way up the thigh, which I do less regularly than the hair below the knees. And I gather the younger generation does either a bikini shave that results in a slim "landing strip" of hair down the center of the "womanly part) or shaves it off completely - and some leave the hair there and shave in cute little designs like hearts. Hmmm, am I the only one who does not do this???? Or am I behind the times and you all shave "all the way" now? Or have you always done this? |
Let's talk about quilting---now there's a pleasant subject.......

Hate shaving.... only do it b/c my husband hates hairy legs. Less often in the winter :) Only up to the knee. Can't really see the hair from knee up, so why shave it?!
|
I shave every other day. Mainly because the tattoo on my calf doesn't look good hairy.
|
Sorry ladies. but I only have about 10 hair on each leg,all below the knee, and none on my arms    My oldest son is the same way, and he blames me because he isn't more "manly" I just use a little neet about once a month. If I had to shave all the time, that would drive me crazy! :-D

As someone else said, if you live long enough you don't have to shave. I'm almost there. I only have to shave my shins. That's about the only advantage of getting older, oh and no more underarm hair.

Clothfiend is absolutely right!!! I haven't had to shave my legs in years. I never did shave them a lot anyway because the hair was blonde. I don't have to shave under my arms often either. I know some women shave other places, but let's not even go there!!
Ditter |
I am very lucky. Like my Mother, my legs are not hairy but in the winter they get very dry.
|
I wax my legs. I used to shave, but it's so much more practical to wax, now that I'm used to it. I only go up to the knee, my hairs are blonde, so they don't show too much anyway. I used to go about every 6 weeks or so to the esthetician, but I started using the neet wax strips and they work great... except that now I can't actually reach my bikini area anymore because my big belly is in the way. I'll have to make an appointment in the next couple of weeks to go back to the esthetician for my waxing. Only costs about 30 bucks and I get a bikini and half leg. Whatever is not waxed gets shaved because I HATE body hair. I can't wax my armpits because a) I would never wait for the hair to get long enough to wax, and 2) it BLOODY HURTS!!!
Even with waxing my legs get very dry... they're just not prickly and dry, lol! I use moisturizer and it helps. I know plenty of girls my age who don't bother to shave their legs in the winter. Maybe they would if they weren't in a relationship or were in a new relationship... A good way to avoid or quickly end a new relationship is to stop shaving   |
Dark course hair - shave every day - 365 days - all the way - manual shaver - in the shower - with soap. Otherwise I can't sleep. Figure I'm stuck with that routine all my life.
|
Have a DGD that shaves the hair ON her arms, is that something that the younger gals are doing? Reminds me of when they had gals shaving off their eyebrows, painted 'em on :-D

My best friend in high school used to pluck all her eyebrows off and draw them on in a thin line, she looked like an idiot! We sort of hinted that it looked silly, but she just got all defensive and b!tchy with us. Then several years later, while looking at old pictures she asked us why we never told her how rediculous she looked.... uh yeah, we totally did. What I don't get is how she could look at herself in the mirror and think that it looked normal? There are some people who have very sparse eyebrow hairs and who sort of fill in the gaps, and there are ways of drawing on or filling in eyebrows that looks more natural than a thin painted-on line, lol! Oh boy... |
Well, you know I just had to jump in on this one......just not sure what to comment :-)

Shaving is over-rated!...just tell Hubby they are Canadian wool socks!
:) |
My DH keeps telling me I don't need to shave my legs!!
I am fortunate that I have blond hair on my legs. I only shave to about 3" above my knee, it's all blond so you can't see it. I will go weeks during the winter without shaving. I did shave this morning cause I need to see the Dr on Thursday about my knee. |
I used to shave every day otherwise could not stand myself. I shaved in the shower with just my shower gel and my razor. Now that I am almost 55, I only have to shave about once a month if that on the legs and still do everyday underarms beccause I don't like the feel otherwise.
DH has never said a word about shaving or not but I like the feel of smooth soft legs and they have alway's been one of my better assets  As far as shaving above your knees...it is an old wives tale as far as I am concerned about your hair getting more course and hairy. My ex-SIL was German and did not shave. Sorry, but it was disgusting. Next question? |

it separates us from the 'lower ' life beings, dogs, cats, horses I don't think Chimps shave... thank Darwin, oh yeah, and the industrial age; when we were all working 20 hour days, no one cared if we had shaved legs. As far as far as the dryness, have you tried shaving with baby oil? it'll gum up your razor a bit. Bag Balm is great after a shave, it's not Chanel #5,but you'll be soft.

Lol, that's all that needed to be added - Bag Balm... ROTFL...
I use Aveeno shave gel, love it. After many years of listening to friends ask why I bothered in the winter, I've let it go a couple of times this year. At least long enough so it's not scratchy stubble, like a couple of weeks. Just hate the way it feels, but it's nice to save a bit of time in the morning. Most of the year, it's every other day. My dad used to tease me, said I had hair on my arms like a log cutter (or something, don't remember exactly). Well, the whole body is that way. I do notice that the eye brows are thinning, they seem to have gone south to my chin. Both DD's shave... hmmm... a lot? I keep asking if it isn't itchy, don't those hairs get grown in? Yuck. No heart patterns, at least that I know of, lol. Tried waxing, and sugaring, but found both to be too much trouble to keep up. Funny topic! |

I don't shave my legs much in the winter either, only for special occasions and only below the knee in the winter unless I'm going swimming.
As for how far "up", I only shave what can be seen when wearing shorts, nothing higher. My bathing suit has a little skirt on it, so no one is going to see what's above it anyway. :D I have dry skin and have to use a moisturizer any time I shave my legs. Chin hair? I thought those were misplaced eyebrows!  |
