Why is it that I can stand at the ironing board all day ironing fabric and pressing seam allowances but the minute I am asked to iron a shirt or something else, it becomes a chore and I feel really put out by it?

   I'm right there with ya on that one.

lindy-2 06-02-2011 06:19 AM

yup strange eh?

craftybear 06-02-2011 06:22 AM

I agree

lynnsim 06-02-2011 06:31 AM

Personally, for me, it's because I ironed so much clothes in the late 50s & 60s. When my older 2 were in their teens and 100% cotton became popular, I told them I would buy the clothes, but they had to iron them. So, they learned to iron.

ckcowl 06-02-2011 06:44 AM

right next to sewing all day- but when the mending comes through the door---it gets put on a closet shelf (hopefully never to be seen again-much to my hubby's dismay)
takes me a year or two to hem a pair of pants...but i can put out a couple dozen quilts !

quilting consumes me...i quilt in my sleep- and really don't want to mend, make dresses (or anything else for that matter) anymore- there are too many quilts to get to before i die....my bucket list has quilts on it :)

MellieKQuilter 06-02-2011 07:21 AM

I always say, I LOVE LOVE LOVE being domestic (cooking, cleaning and quilting or other crafts) but ONLY ON MY TERMS. :) When its expected of me? Oh ya... not gonna happen. :)

mzmama 06-02-2011 07:22 AM

There ya go...

Airwick156 06-02-2011 07:28 AM

That happens BECAUSE....YOU enjoy quilting and its just part of the process and is FUN.
Just regular ironing...that is a CHORE and isnt any fun. And we don't like chores.

alikat110 06-02-2011 07:46 AM

Yeah! My husband can do his own ironing....so why doesn't he????

sewgull 06-02-2011 08:19 AM

I agree.

I here Ya... I hate ironing clothes and the same goes for when someone asks me to mend something for them or alter a piece of clothing. I just say NO! and leave it at that.

twixbar 06-02-2011 12:47 PM

Oh so true here.

Jennifer22206 06-02-2011 01:09 PM

ditto!
I think it's because quilting and everything that goes along with it is fun to us because it's our hobby.

wolfkitty 06-02-2011 01:12 PM

I don't mind ironing clothes, but, as much as I like sewing quilt tops, and even clothing, I hate mending. So I understand what you are saying. They are not the same thing. The end of one task is very different than the end of the other task. So, just because you like one, doesn't mean you will like the other.

Kehoeta 06-02-2011 01:15 PM

I told my husband before we got married that if he was looking for a "Domestic Goddess" - look elsewhere. He just accepts that I don't do some chores and either takes his stuff to the cleaners or does it himself.

phatquilts2 06-02-2011 03:06 PM

Naturally, the difference between pressing and ironing. The first is for our art and the second is a chore.

quiltpd 06-02-2011 03:35 PM

Sounds familiar.

aliaslaceygreen 06-02-2011 04:01 PM

Would you ask Picasso to paint your house???

cathyvv 06-02-2011 04:03 PM

You're human?

I feel the same way...

charity-crafter 06-02-2011 04:05 PM

Yes, Yes. Me too. And don't give me something to mend-it won't be done.

Ironing dh shirts? <whine> Do I have to? Maybe we could just re-wash them and take them out of the dryer when they are slightly damp and shake the wrinkles out?

pester 06-02-2011 04:34 PM

Because you really don't want to iron the shirt or whatever, and you aren't doing something that you really like such as quilting.

I can piece together crumbs for hours, but I feel the same way as you when hubby asks me to mend a shirt!

zipit 06-03-2011 05:02 AM

I am down to my last pressed shirt. I'm starting to wonder if I really need to run those errands.

gspsplease 06-03-2011 05:41 AM

Before I started quilting, the holes in my iron had healed up from non-use!

grannypat7925 06-03-2011 06:50 AM

My hub does his own ironing and then asks if have anything I want ironed. I am lucky!

svenskaflicka1 06-03-2011 07:58 AM

when hubby's office (local sheriff) mandated pressed "hard seams" in the shirts and pants, i gifted him with his own iron and ironing board for his birthday. it was a pain for him--but hey, i work full time, too! since he retired, the ironing board has moved into my sewing room, and his iron moved into his woodshop, for ironing on edging and veneers...

BobbiG 06-03-2011 08:03 AM

It must have to do with motivation.

patski 06-03-2011 08:30 AM

 me too

Barbara Mahoney 06-03-2011 09:22 AM

I know what you mean. I feel that way about sewing clothing. I usually just say no, however, my land lady asked me to make a couple of dresses in exchange for part of the rent. I can't turn down that deal. I hope the patterns aren't too difficult. I remember how to put in a zipper but I'm not sure about buttonholes.

Kat Sews 06-03-2011 09:26 AM

people iron clothing? I thought that ended with the old days.

MargeD 06-03-2011 09:42 AM

Because you are doing something you love, so it's not work. In fact last night I spent about 2 hours pressing the half-square triangles that I had sewn for the family reunion quilt that has to be done before the end of the month. I try not to iron clothes if I can help it. Ironing fabric is relaxing to me, as I can get the ironing board out, turn on a show on TV or a moving and before I know it, the stack of fabric is done, plus everything is one piece, no sleeves, no tucks, etc.

misseva 06-03-2011 10:13 AM

Before my husban died and my son was still at home, I took great satisfaction when they left the house in starched & ironed shirts/pants. They looked soooo good. I did some ironing for my pastor & his wife for a while - felt the same way when they showed up at church all spiffy & ironed.

decky 06-03-2011 10:15 AM

My husband use to wear white shirts to work many years ago. One day I spent most of the day ironing those darn white shirts got all done but two of them. The next day my husband wanted of the the shirts that I didn't iron and got mad that it wasn't ironed. Told him that if he wanted that one to iron it himself and then told him he could start ironing all of them. Guess who took them to someone who did ironing in her home and had to pay her to do it. Never ironed a white shirt after that day.

fivepaws 06-03-2011 11:28 AM

Beats me. I have a stack waiting to be ironed, waiting, waiting, waiting.............
