Would you buy a hand made item, even if you studied it and found it wasn't perfect? For example...a tote bag with pockets, and the pocket on the outside wasn't centered? Or a quilt with wonky crooked stitches?

Quilter7x 01-07-2011 10:43 AM

I would not pay a lot of money for it, but yes I would buy something that isn't perfect. It makes the item unique. :)

sharon b 01-07-2011 10:45 AM

If I really liked it and the imperfections were not glaring - sure why not  I don't think I have ever made anything perfect  LOL

Rebecca VLQ 01-07-2011 10:45 AM

Yes, but those are usually sold at a discounted price and labelled as a "second" and the flaw listed. :D

Many people will snap up on an item such as that, as long as the sewing is sound.

KathyAire 01-07-2011 10:45 AM

It would certainly depend on the item. I would buy a bag with a pocket that was off center. The quilt - depends on how wonky. Also, if it's custom made, I would probably buy it because I selected the colors, pattern, etc.

blzzrdqueen 01-07-2011 10:46 AM

The reason I ask....

Is because I'm making a bow tuck to sell, and the front pocket is off center, just a bit...I think it will show, because the handles are all centered, but now the pocket is not and I double zig zagged in into place, so I can't rip it off and re-sew....I'm not sure what I was going to charge for it, after cost of materials and time spent creating it, I was going to charge between $35-40...that's what they are going for on Etsy, but now I just don't know....

Quilter7x 01-07-2011 10:48 AM

Very good question. Is it possible for you to add a pocket beside it that you could put a pen into? That would take the focus off the big pocket being off center.

Here is a pic of the outside panel with the pocket...if I were to add a small pocket, I think it would extend further then I would want.....

oatw13 01-07-2011 10:55 AM

Hmm... Now that I see the picture, I don't think it is that bad. Yes, when I look at it this way I can see it is off a hair, but I think if it is hanging by the handles and maybe had some padding indie, I don't think I would notice it.

GwynR 01-07-2011 10:56 AM

Did someone already pay for it? If so, I would ask them, and maybe offer a discount. In they don't want it, make another for them and post this one for sale, with a picture of the off center pocket and a price. Anyone buying it at that point knows what they are getting. If it doesn't sale, lower the price and try again.

fidgety 01-07-2011 10:57 AM

Ok so tell me how many of you would notice that the pocket is a tad bit off? If you had not know about it?

blzzrdqueen 01-07-2011 10:58 AM

No, no one has asked for it yet, I was going to put it on Etsy...

AngieS 01-07-2011 10:58 AM

Unless I really studyed it I wouldn't notice!

craftybear 01-07-2011 11:00 AM

very cute purse

Annaquilts 01-07-2011 11:03 AM

Yes, if I liked how it added charm.

bjnicholson 01-07-2011 11:03 AM

I wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't told us about it. I like the colors and I think it really is worth $35.

quiltlonger 01-07-2011 11:20 AM

What purse is going to be empty?? and not hanging from your arm Wonkie is my middle name As long as stuff not going to fall off or out of bag Someone will be a happy camper/shopper

Kehoeta 01-07-2011 11:51 AM

Can't even tell.

ann clare 01-07-2011 11:51 AM

Off course I would. If the price is right. It is amazing what a button or a piece of trimming can do. Unique.

nativetexan 01-07-2011 12:02 PM

add more stitching on the outside of the side too far in and maybe more stitching inside on the one too far out. should even it out nicely. if you can't do that now, it's really not all that noticeable to me anyway.

Just go for it then, someone is going to think it's supposed to be that way!!!

morelcabin 01-07-2011 12:12 PM

Not noticable enough to worry about...price it and post it and someone will buy it.

Could you maybe attach buttons or a pin or somthing to cover up the slight off center?

Ditter43 01-07-2011 12:46 PM

It would depend on how much I liked it otherwise...... :-D

sewgull 01-07-2011 12:49 PM

I would add a couple of buttons for balance.
Maybe a star shape.

Cute bag.

blzzrdqueen 01-07-2011 01:18 PM

You guys are all so sweet! I guess maybe because it's something I made, the flaw bugs the crap out of me. I like the idea of adding some buttons to the side of the pocket, if I can find some stars that are small enough I'll do that...if not I'll leave it the way it is and see if someone bites. I'll post it for sale here too if anyone will be interested.

CarrieAnne 01-07-2011 02:51 PM

I wouldnt have noticed if you hadnt said something....its really pretty!

GwynR 01-07-2011 07:00 PM

thats not off much, had you said nothing, i never would have noticed! its very cute! i would buy it, if i didn't have too many of my own already! lol

Jingle 01-07-2011 07:14 PM

Pretty purse. Have you noticed lots of things you buy in stores are not perfect either? Everything is made by humans and they are not perfect.

sandy12010 01-07-2011 07:33 PM

I probably wouldnt of noticed it unless I really was eye balling the item and looking for defects...but i would buy if I liked the item

raedar63 01-07-2011 07:34 PM

Yep....

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 01-07-2011 07:58 PM

I buy things I like. In the past, I've bought chipped cups because they were pretty so why not a wonky bag. If it calls to me I'll buy it and I've been called by some strange stuff over the years.

katei 01-08-2011 03:14 AM

I'd adopt the 'man on a galloping horse ....' theory and if you're ok with that then go ahead. On the other hand it could just be your 'Amish' tribute :-P

Born2Sew 01-08-2011 03:37 AM

By the time it's finished, I think it will be just fine. Once the ties are added, it will be great!

Airwick156 01-08-2011 05:10 AM

I didn't notice and even after looking at the picture, if I didn't know what I was looking for I would not have noticed.

Me too.

quilt3311 01-08-2011 05:46 AM

If I liked it and it wasn't to pricy, sure I would buy it.

chance 01-08-2011 05:57 AM

Maybe you could add another row (column) of zig zag on either side of the existing rows. One on the furthest outside and the other on the inside so that all four rows even it up. Clear as mud?

quiltmom04 01-08-2011 06:56 AM

No - not if it is new. An antique item that's not perfect sometimes has character. But when someone is selling a new item that is not perfect, I can't imagne they don't know that, and I think they are in effect saying"I really don't have the skills to do this, but I want you to pay for it." That's just sloppy. If someone is selling something, they are saying their work is good enough to pay for, and as such should reflect an excellent quality. Unless it's a kid trying to raise money for a good cause, and then it's more like charity, and the wonky, poorly made item reflects a good heart, and I'm happy to donate.

emsgranny 01-08-2011 07:07 AM

Its not bad enough to notice - the print is busy enough I dont think it shows..by the time someone puts all their stuff in it who will notice lol If you hadnt pointed it out I sure would not have noticed!!
