Do you remember on May Day where you would have streamers on flagpole at school and play over under, etc? The sun would be shining, all the little girls would have cute sundresses on with shoes and socks. Remember any of that?? Well, today in the Ozarks, it is 47 degrees, rainy, somewhat windy; our heater is turned up, we have layers and layers on. What is wrong with this picture? What happened to our SPRING??

nanaquilter 05-01-2011 02:03 PM

It seems the last few years we have gone from winter to summer with no spring and from summer to winter with no fall.

Carron 05-01-2011 03:21 PM

Oh spring is there, but it is just too cold for it to come outside.

Fabaddict 05-01-2011 03:47 PM

we aren't getting anymore spring in the Ozarks - we will go right to summer. And Since I am ready for the heat, Let Summer arrive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

isnthatodd 05-01-2011 03:49 PM

I remember dancing around the maypole. It was a big deal, because only the 5th graders got to dance, and the younger ones had to watch.

Ditter43 05-01-2011 03:52 PM

I think we almost skipped spring and went right into summer! Temps in the high 80's but cool at night many nights. I'm afraid it won't be long before it won't cool off much at night! I'm glad we had more insulation added a few months ago. We can already see a difference.
:-D :-D

Radiana 05-01-2011 03:54 PM

I sure do remember all the sweetness of May Day but I remember one year when our teacher said it would no longer be celebrated at our school, I'm not sure if it was the school district that made that decision or the government but it was so sad to hear that because I remember our whole class being very confused and disappointed about it.

sherriequilts 05-01-2011 03:54 PM

SNOW in New Mexico. will be 27 degrees todnight! This on May first!

michelehuston 05-01-2011 03:56 PM

It seems like it is all winter any more. I so want some warm weather!1 I am in my flannel jammies! I remember it being so much warmer this time of year!! Not sure where they went anymore!!

susanwilley 05-01-2011 05:40 PM

OMG!!! Haven't thought of May Day in .....many a day! The pole and all the colorful streamers!

Painiacs 05-01-2011 06:11 PM

Cold up here in Michigan and our furnace died! Brrr thank goodness for blankets!!

MawMaw B 05-01-2011 06:21 PM

The same thing, but opposite here in Texas. We were in the 90's last week and no rain. My lawn is now brown. Of course we have a house over our head and a little money for gas, so I can't really complain, after the southeast got hammered by tornadoes and rain last week.

Parrothead 05-01-2011 06:29 PM

I also remember the May Day pole and the little baskets (cones) we made and filled with flowers to place on neighbors door. We had to quit doing all this during the Cold War as it is a Russian tradition. We even burned any book that came from Russian or was a Russian fairy tale. Sad, sad.

Neena 05-01-2011 06:38 PM

Yes, I remember winding the maypole in grade school and when spring was warm.

grannie cheechee 05-01-2011 06:56 PM

We didn't do the Maypole, but we did the flowers in the cone. I didn't know it was a Russian fairy tale. Our kids and grands sure miss out on a lot. Of course, the weather is so lousy that up north the flowers haven't come out.

That's what we did also! We made the flowers out of paper and put them in a cone type paper vase with a handle. We were told to pick a neighbor and hang it on their door knob. I always left mine on the door of Mrs. Rodgers!

Julianna 05-02-2011 04:46 AM

We still do May Day fun. Wonderful spring here, cool and rainy. I do not like going from winter directly to summer - sweaters to shorts - and appreciate a gradual change. My daffodils are blooming, iris have buds as do redbud trees and many wildflowers are beginning to be seen in our woods. I enjoy all seasons but not excessive heat as some summers.

Rettie V. Grama 05-02-2011 04:56 AM

It just moved north.

I don't remember ever dancing around the May pole, but we alway made May baskets to hang on people's door knobs. You rolled construction paper to make a cone and added a handle. We filled them with candies and some Spring violets. Hang them on someone's door and run and hide so you could watch their surprise.

mummadee 05-02-2011 05:03 AM

I only remember that from books, I grew up in Newark, NJ in the 50's and we didn't do anything like that.
For the past 5 or so years my gardening friend an I have done May baskets for each other. So much fun to come out in the morning and find them. Surprise!! This year we've added another buddy so there were 2. Mine were both purple. Gorgeous.

Maralyn 05-02-2011 05:32 AM

We celebrated May Day before global warming! Now it's to cold - overnight low of 36 degrees here in Iowa.

Chuckled when I saw the "For You Seniors" heading. I was reading the Omaha World Herald yesterday and they had a story about a trial where an "elderly" lady of 60 testified against a drug dealer. Bet that label didn't set well with some of their readers....including me.

Linsoblu 05-02-2011 05:59 AM

Yes I remember! We also did the May baskets with flowers to put on our neighbors door step.

kdlingenfelter 05-02-2011 06:20 AM

Be happy it could be snowing

raedar63 05-02-2011 06:46 AM

I am not a seinor but I remember. Wait, sometimes I think I am a seinor at 47 the way times have changed.I went to a mayday celebration a few years ago it was so much fun dancing around the maypole as adults lol

thats quite scary that I can remember doing that at infant school quite clearly

Owllady 05-02-2011 07:24 AM

Here in Central Texas, we have finally gotten a break from all the 90's and it is low 40's this morning with just a small amount of rain. From Summer to winter in a matter of hours. Nice. Yes, we did the May Pole Dance, but that was a long time ago. Good memories.

babyboomerquilter 05-02-2011 07:32 AM

I do remember this, also my boys did this in grade school.

nanac 05-02-2011 07:53 AM

A few years ago, I made a comment at work about May Day, and absolutely no one else knew what I was talking about. The only MayDay they knew was the distress call.
I went online, and found a site that described it, but I was sad that they thought the tradition was "stupid".
Guess the fact that I remember makes me officially a senior, now?

I was remembering yesterday with my cousin - we would stay at our grandmother's house in town and she would help us make little baskets. Next day we were allowed to cut flowers from her garden, make lovely May baskets and deliver them to all of her friends up and down the street. I will always remember that as being something so special.
