USPS is studying whether to close about 1 in 10 post offices.

http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/...-700-locations

There is a link to a list by state so you can see if your local office is affected.

nativetexan 07-26-2011 09:40 AM

Wow, usually it's small cities i never heard of. I ck'd Colorado and Texas. one in TX is central Ft.Worth! i guess they have more though. what will the people in small towns do?

QuiltnNan 07-26-2011 09:42 AM

thanks for the info. i feel sorry that some will be losing their location. my post office is not on the list. however, we used to get our mail right after lunch, like clockwork. now, we are lucky to get it by 6:30pm. i chatted with the carrier yesterday who said the end of the route won't be delivered until 9pm. he said they start later and their routes are expanded.

sparkys_mom 07-26-2011 09:52 AM

It makes sense in many ways. I usually buy stamps at the grocery store. Today, I purchased some at the local UPS when I used them to send a package (instead of the post office). I can buy stamps on line and print postage and request package pickups. I pay the majority of my bills on line. I send emails instead of letters. I do still send birthday cards by mail. :-D

crafty_linda_b 07-26-2011 09:56 AM

This is another sign of technology. I now pay alot of my bills online so I am sure I am part of the reason. I very seldom write a letter anymore. Its easier to send an email. It wouldn't seem like one persons use or lack of it would effect them but I am sure it does. Our post master is retiring next March and he said they won't replace him. They are also talking about not having any Sat delivery. Most everyone in our town gets their mail at the post office in a box there. We only have a limited amount of actual house delivered mail. We are in a small town in a rural area. crafty_linda_b

JulieR 07-26-2011 10:06 AM

I'm a little surprised ours isn't closing, but then they don't deliver our mail either.

They are cutting their hours though, opening later and closing earlier. If I want to pick up a package I have to go home early from work or go early on Saturday morning. (You know, since they won't delivery the darned thing and our PO box is the size of a can of coke.) No sense in going at lunchtime, either - they close for an hour so they can all eat together in the back room. Awww.

Can you tell I have some attitude about my small town post office? LOL

DebraK 07-26-2011 10:11 AM

We just recently saved ours with petition.

CloverPatch 07-26-2011 10:13 AM

a couple of years ago, our city closed 3 post offices and condensed them into a larger brandnew facility.

Jim's Gem 07-26-2011 11:14 AM

No, it's hanging around!

ptquilts 07-26-2011 11:15 AM

there are two in VT on the list that I am familiar with. The first one is within walking distance of another PO.
The second one, our assistant clerk subbed there for a week. She said, one day, all she did was sell one 44 cent stamp.

Some should be closed. The town next to us has 5 post offices for a population of about 2600.

loves_2_quilt 07-26-2011 11:33 AM

Sad for those around the closing Post Offices

Melrose R 07-26-2011 11:46 AM

None in my neck of the woods are closing....

MIJul 07-26-2011 11:47 AM

Thanks for posting this. We've been worried about our little post office and it's not on the list. Whew.

Pam B 07-26-2011 11:57 AM

Not mine (but it might as well) but the very small next door community post office is on the list. LOL I grew up exactly one mile north of that post office and, imagine my surprise when I was 9 or 10 to learn that our mail did not even go to that post office...it went to the community 3 miles to the east!!! I think the main problem with the postal system is total inefficiency.

starshine 07-26-2011 12:04 PM

Thanks for the heads up. The branch near my house is not on the list but the one near my work is.

ontheriver 07-26-2011 12:13 PM

I hope not, we only have one in town.

debp33 07-26-2011 12:24 PM

Whew, not us.

By looking at the Idaho list, most of them are teeny tiny towns, or huge cities with multiple post offices already.

pojo 07-26-2011 01:08 PM

One in our town and one in a little town by us.
In our town we have about 6.
The one in our town shouldn't close because it is in a area by all senior citizens. Some can't walk and they don't drive so what are they going to do.

They don't consider that.

Navy Wife 07-26-2011 01:24 PM

Ours will stay open. We only have 1 PO for Maryville and 1 for Alcoa, population about 40,000 for the 2. There are 2 or 3 others in the county, each serving a small town.

Barbshobbies 07-26-2011 01:52 PM

Wondering why. I just had a birthday and got many cards. One was from 50 miles away, but was post marked in a city near by, and one was from a friend 2 miles up the road and it was post marked about 130 miles away.

plainpat 07-26-2011 02:10 PM

Our paper said within 10-15 yrs, mail will only be delivered 3 times a wk.Doesn't really affect us.When we traveled in an RV,we got mail once a month :)

bakermom 07-26-2011 03:29 PM

one town near me is closing but the one where I live and the one my little hometown. are safe for now. The little one in my hometown has been threatened with closure for years. it would be sad, it's a little rural crossroads town and the PO is pretty much the hub of the town. Most of the others little stores have closed as the owners aged and retired.

Painiacs 07-26-2011 04:02 PM

No we r out in no mans land so need ours!!

Crafty1 07-26-2011 04:05 PM

As far as I know, the two that I go to are not and they are not on the list.

Me too!! Population of 189.. I host swaps so if we lose our PO I refuse to drive the 20+ miles one way... So far our Po has squeaked by the list and working extra hard to stay out of the red - money wise.. ....

TonnieLoree 07-26-2011 04:17 PM

No closure for La Grande, OR.

Stitchit123 07-26-2011 06:07 PM

We're losing 5 smaller ones and the Main one in down town-plus 9 more in the little towns outside of the city limits This is unbelievable

Yooper32 07-27-2011 03:59 AM

Looks like WV is going to be hit very hard. Very long list, but thank goodness mine isn't on the list.

DebsShelties 07-27-2011 04:06 AM

I saw and read where they will put them into storefronts. Using small stores like 7 - 11's to hold small areas for postal stuff including mailings.

blueangel 07-27-2011 04:23 AM

Thanks, mine isn.t on the list.

Homespun 07-27-2011 05:59 AM

Mine is still open but they get the mail from a different post office and bring it to ours to sort and deliver. Previously a truck delivered to them. It comes a day later.

quiltingaz 07-27-2011 06:05 AM

Mine is not on the list thank goodness. It is OK to go to PO in summer, but oh how I hate to go in winter. The wait in line is usually close to an hour. If I drive 15 miles to main PO I can self mail packages, but I hate driving that far for 1 item.

ShowMama 07-27-2011 07:10 AM

Several post offices near me are on the list for evaluation, but no one knows yet if they will close. All of them are in very small towns with mostly rural delivery. We're keeping our fingers crossed that they can stay open.

ptquilts 07-27-2011 07:37 AM

ours was up for review about 15 years ago and I learned at the time, one of the deciding factors is not how much mail they process but how much they sell. So you can bet I buy ALL my stamps at my local PO. Even when I spend the winter elsewhere, I stock up on stamps at home before I go.

mdollar 07-27-2011 10:38 AM

No, but there are two on the list that are further down in the country that are. They won't affect me and I am glad ours isn't one of the ones mentioned because I would hate to have to go through the hassle of getting another address. What a pain. I do think we could go without Saturday delivery though. What would that hurt?

writerwomen 07-27-2011 11:53 AM

Amazing isn't it- we elect people who aren't competent simply by popularity. We let them make decisions based on their personal bent to the lobbiests. We want to believe we live in the best run country in the world yet here we are allowing the same money we each worked to earn be spent and thrown away on incompetently run programs and services because they are government- oh and by the way- next time your boss says we aren't giving out raises this year because the company is not able to- just tell him hogwash there's always money- just tell the customers to buy more and charge them double- and if they refuse find a way to get more money out of them in service fees

KarenR 07-27-2011 11:56 AM

My towns on the list. I may need to request mail to keep it open. LOL

lots2do 07-27-2011 02:34 PM

A couple of the Maine ones are on islands. One of the NH ones is the South Tamworth PO. It's a little, tiny, tiny building, no bigger than a room. Cute but probably not a big money maker.

Glenda m 07-27-2011 03:23 PM

Looks like most of the closings in Oklahoma are in the western part of the state. There was only one in OKC. Just glad the one in my town wasn't listed.

sylvia77 07-27-2011 03:24 PM

We looked last night and ours isn't listed. We have one about a 1 1/2 miles down the road, very convenient!
