My hours were reduced at work and my job assignment changed. They cut my salary by 16% and I can be transfered anywhere in the county if I want to keep my job. They dissolved my dept. but I kept my job while 25 other people were laid off so I guess I should be happy. There are no jobs here (CA) so I can't quit, but I don't want to drive up to 2 hrs a day one way to get to work.

I want to quit, but my husband looks like this  everytime I mention it.

Sorry to hear that. Hope things get better. I am home unemployed since February. I just got a job but can not start until my Med Tech license is approved and that may take a few weeks. I am now able to concentrate and sew but for weeks I did nothing.

Less money is better than no money.

I know about the tight money. I've worked about three weeks this year and made less than $6500 last year. My retirement fund is going so fast but I have another 10 years before I can retire.

Thanks for the reality check, I guess I shouldn't be complaining.

He's probably scared...sorry things are not so good for you, but hang in there. When you least expect it, things often change for the better, just keep an open mind and your eyes open for any other work opportunities that may eventuate.

CAROLJ I am sorry about the job changes. That just stinks. What do you do at work? That drive would be a bad deal, but at least you do have a paycheck. Can you quit until you can land something that would eliminate the long drive? I am getting so bad about hating to drive anywhere. As if you couldn't tell. LOL We have a DS that has been unemployed for 2 months and no prospects of anything. He sends out Resume's daily and fills out apps. online daily. The only thing that has come up, has been jobs that pays worse than unemployment. Sad. Hang in there. Hope things improve there for you.

I work part time for a staffing agency. There is no safe job, as far as I can tell. People who bought into the "diploma mill" schools to ride out the downturn are now finding out that most medical billing is outsourced, and jobs for massage therapists are nearly non-existant, adding to the competition for any existing jobs. Unemployment is running out for the people who have had it for two years straight. Some days the desperation is nearly overwhelming.

If you have a job, hang in there. You can still update your resume and start looking, but if you quit or resign, chances of getting unemployment are slim to none. How long can you afford to hold out? The savings goes, the 401K gets cashed in for living expenses, and there are no assurances of economic recovery coming soon (where I am).

Part-time jobs do not pay enough for full-time bills, but subsistance is a big step up from some of the alternatives. The fact that they are keeping you means you must be doing something right!

I work for a county school district, as a specialist. I liked my job, I had a great boss, and an ideal job. There are no teaching jobs here, so if I quit, I may not find another job. There have been hundreds of lay offs in my area in education. The reduction of pay isn't the big problem, it's the travel time and costs involved. I figure it will cost about 600 to 800 in gas per month to drive, that is a lot of money. That doesn't count wear and tear on the car or the increased insurance or maintenace.

But when I look at the other side, no job, I'm lucky. I was kept when others with senority were laid off.

Things are bad and I don't know when they will get better. Our unemployment is as high as 25% when they count in the agriculture workers. I hope the economy begins to turn around.

2 hours each way would be a bummer, but my husband is commuting to Mexico City to keep his job. 2 weeks down there, 1 week home. It stinks!
