Friday night was the Relay for Life in Orono, Maine. It was held in the football stadium at the University of Maine. It was a huge event and a very moving event. The field was lit up as bright as day and the kids were playing in the middle. When it came time for the Luminaria ceremony, the lights were turned down and around the track were hundreds of lighted bags with names of survivors and those who lost their battle with cancer. Also on the big scoreboard all of the names were scrolling. My 13 year old granddaughter stood on the 50 yard line and sang "Amazing Grace" in the a pure voice that filled every corner of that stadium. She sang for her Dad who she had lost to cancer 3 days after Christmas in 2009. She also sang for herself because she has just learned that she carries the same gene that her father and his mother and many others in the family have. She has a 90% chance of getting cancer before she is 40. She sings for a cure.
Her message to anyone who will listen, "We relay for a cure. please join us"
So for any of my QB friends if there is a Relay in your area, join in, become part of this group....There are too many names on the bags!!!

Loved your post. Would loved to have heard your granddaughter sing.

Our relay was in April. The committee worked so hard to make it nice for us surviors. It was so appreciated by me.

What a great cause. I lost my boss three days before Thanksgiving last year to cancer. She was such a sweet and encouraging lady. I make something every year to raffle off. Thanks for sharing.

I lost my mother to cancer in 1987 and my husband has been battling cancer since 2001. We participate in Relay for Life for several years now. It is a very moving ceremony and I think it gives a lot of hope.

How sad that your granddaughter has the gene. May they find a cure soon.

Sometimes hope is the only thing that makes us get up another day....and as my late son-in-law used to say "slow down and remember what is really important in life." HUGS to you
