I'm halfway through the t-shirt quilt that was supposed to be a Christmas present for a friend. I had one shirt that was so huge that if I included it in the quilt I would of either had to alter the quilt entirely (like adding sashing around the other blocks just so they match) or cutting it the same size as the other blocks and loosing a considerable amount of the design. Luckily one of the shirts had a design on the back and used that instead of this shirt.

Anyways, I want to include the shirt with the quilt as a sort of bonus gift. You know, he gets this quilted wallhanging and an extra band t-shirt to wear. But it needs to be ironed and folded and I have trouble with ironing t-shirts and don't know how to fold a shirt where the front design will be showing. Any tips?

Iron flat from the back so you dont touch the decal with the hot iron, some of them will melt.

Then lay the t-shirt face down on a table and fold it in thirds lengthwise Then fold in thirds the other way.. the hem up first and the neck down last. This should leave most of the design showing when you turn it over. Of course, I am assuming that the design is in the middle of the front....

Good....except what do you do if there's a design on the back, too? lol. It might not matter. This shirt was one out of two that didn't have that plasticy sort of feel...there's little difference between the feel of the t-shirt fabric and the design. So I almost think that this one is screen printed instead of ironed on and screen printed designs don't melt to my knowledge.

Just be careful and barely touch the iron to a tiny bit of the decoration. I wear our Blood Bank T shirts on mobile drives and
some of them came off on my iron.

I'd suggest that you iron them on the wrong side, and if you don't think that would work, iron on the wrong side with a pressing cloth. Most of them are either all cotton or a cotton/poly mix, so use the lowest setting, for poly if it has any in it.

Fold it so whatever side you want him to see shows first.
I Iron them all the time keep the iron away from the decoration, sleeves, near neck/shoulders, and around the body part, or pop it back in the dryer warm it up and give a couple of good flops and lay flat while it's still warm.

Got a kick out of this........ Thanks for the memory, once Mom took several of my brothers friends and showed them how to iron a dress shirt and fold a shirt for less wrinkles.... years later, they still get a kick out of it, and still doing most of their own ironing for work etc.

when I did a tee shirt quilt with too big tees I incorporated the too big tees into the backing and it looked great

Put the shirt in the dryer for a few minutes. Take out before dryer stops then fold.
